I'll be honest- I did notice on the packaging that it said "smaller with simple play" but I didn't connect the dots to realize that this is the ***MINI***. The mini is fun too but if you're going for the original experience, with the food/happiness/weight meters and the game and all that, than this version will disappoint.

Perhaps my timeline is wrong, but I remember the mini version coming out a good 9+ years after the 1997 version. So for a 20th anniversary re-release I expected something more along the lines of the original. You can still interact with this one, but it's much much simpler. Feed it, clean it up, and turn the lights out. That's basically it. There's no menu bar to scroll through, etc.

Be aware, too, that you can get the same toy from Toys'r'us for $14.99. But no complaints about the vendor here (zencore products) except for the small irritation about the price inflation. Very fast shipping, days before the expected arrival date, and well wrapped & protected.

A lot of people have been complaining about the 20th anniversary mini Tamagotchis, but honestly, I love them. This is my first one, and I immediately ordered another after playing with it. As an adult, taking care of a full Tamagotchi is a bit much. This one is definitely more my speed these days. Functionality includes: feeding (meal & snack), cleaning, taking care of it when it's sick, and turning on & off its light when it goes to sleep. You can also toggle the sound as well. I think it's a really fun remake of the original, and worth the money.

Definitely marketed as a small nostalgic feel. The controls are simple and basic, most of your activities are basic care and food. When they are unhappy, you feed them candy, when they are hungry you feed them until they shake their head. Then they sleep.

The picture compares with a Tamagotchi Connection V3. I got impatient and nostalgic and put a fresh battery in. It has more controls, you play minigames to feed their happiness bar, and if you happen to have two they can play games together and match up. It has a wider egg, and a wider screen with smaller pixels allowing for more complicated characters. Also, the parents stick around their kids for 24 hours, you can see that the parent is hanging out with the baby in the v3.

The most recent version 4u apparently also connects to an app. So if you just want the nostalgic feel of a cheap knockoff, this is perfect. If you want an actual tamagotchi that bandai actually cares about 4u (the one with the egg that people are being sent by sellers who don't care about the difference.)

This little tamagotchi gets a bit of a bad rap mostly because it's gameplay doesn't quite resemble the tamagotchis we once loved. And I can understand the frustration-- when you see "reboot" you expect something that both pays close homage to the original while keeping up with the times and revamping elements for even greater gameplay. Admittedly, when I first got this tamagotchi, I was annoyed that instead of evolving the toy, Bandai stripped it of most elements and created a shell of what the virtual pet game once was. However, time made me realize that the change was pretty genius.

You can tell through the reviews that most people who purchased this tamagotchi were adults buying the toy out of nostalgia. What comes with being an adult? A very busy life! By removing the restrictions that made the tamagotchi a pretty demanding toy, Bandai has actually made it a perfect solution for the young adults who bought them that wouldn't have the time to dedicate towards caring for their little friend.

That being said, at the time of this review, there is a full-version tamagotchi available. Now with the option to choose, there no more reason to feel robbed of those great toy memories. I still prefer this little one for my current lifestyle; it's just enough to remind me why I loved the toy so much.

Very disappointed. It wasn't obvious to me that I was buying a mini, simplified remake of the original tamagotchi. I saw "The Original Virtual Pet" and got excited. This isn't the original. All you can do is feed it, nothing else. And the toy is so freaking small you can hardly handle it. And forget being able to see the screen. It can't be that hard to re release the original so why not do that?

Waaay too small and simple. You can't do anything with it besides feed it. AVOID. if you want a MORE authentic experience, try the $1.00 mobile app. Also I was sent the wrong color but I hardly care now.

Tamagotchi!!!! They're back and hard to find as ever. Save yourself a trip to ten stores and buy one or six here. This little guy is so adorable and easier to care for then all prior models. It is very basic being that you just feed and clean it up a few times a day to keep it from dying. I attach mine to the larger Japanese models I have and it is the perfect charm accessory! I have collected Tamagotchi since the 90's and this version is no exception. The first wave colors were super cute and I just had to have this hot pink retro design! I should add that this version actually allows you to silence it so you can sneak it into work or school and not have it "bother" everyone. The first week I had it clipped to my purse and the reactions I received were so fantastic that I truly hope Bandai brings more models here to the US. They have been going strong in Japan and even have color models now that are quite popular. Being 30 and carrying around a toy should feel wrong, but it doesn't when you're feeling a wee bit nostalgic!

It's a smallee version because it's the anniversary one. People need to stop bitching and read descriptions before buying. You feed it,clean its poop and thats it. Tamagotchi.

The Tamagotchi mini is incredibly cute if you appreciate it. But for that you have to know what it is, it's not the full version of the original Tamagotchi. It doesn't have any overhead icons, you can't play a game with it, there are no stats to check. You pick up the poop, you feed it meal and candy, you heal it when it's sick, and you turn off the lights. It grows up. It's suitable for a keychain if you don't have time to really play with one like the original one which beeps all the time. This one you can almost leave alone the entire day and nothing serious will happen. once or twice is really all that's needed daily to keep it alive.

Get it for the sake of a keychain, not for the original play, and if you are busy but would like a modern take on it for the sake of nostalgia. Get it because it's incredibly cute, or don't because that's the main reason people are disappointed. The original is also available.

I was worried this would be crappy. But it works great. I think it's a bit smaller than the tamagotchis or giga pets of my day, but that's not a biggie. My 11 year old thought it was awesome and all of her friends are enthralled with it as well.
it's been a year, the battery just recently died but we were able to replace the battery and get it working again. My daughter still loves it, so I'm sure most kids would think it's cool. But they are not as good or fun as the ones when I was a kid. Since my daughter hasn't experienced the original, she doesn't know she's missing out. I wouldn't pay over $15 (price I paid) for sure.
