Best small Mac keyboard to go "battery free"
by Technical Artist (4 out of 5 stars)
October 23, 2018

In recent years, I've used many Mac keyboards -- Apple, Logitech solar-powered, Logitech rechargeable, and several wired keyboards with a keypad. All of them sooner or later left me frustrated. Logitech's batteries wear down in a matter of months. The solar keyboard is no longer really available (except on the secondary market). And I just got tired of the "your keyboard has died, change the batteries again" routine.

Unfortunately I could never really find a suitable wired replacement, until I tried this keyboard. While it's not perfect, and it felt a little "clacky" when I first started using it, it is nevertheless the best solution if you don't want a full-sized keyboard with keypad crowding your desktop.

Pros:
* Wired (for me this is a plus) - no more batteries!
* Same approximate size, shape, and styling of Apple's official keyboard
* Performs reasonably as expected.
* No more wrestling with finicky wireless connections or batteries
* Price still seems high for machine-molded plastic and some minor electronics, but it's cheaper than competitors.

Cons:
* Feels a little cheap when you type at first... a little "clickety-clackety"
* Keys and typing action are not as nice as Macally's larger keyboards
* There is a bright, unnecessary power light at the top of the keyboard. It's distracting, so I taped over it.
* Plastic feels sturdy, but cheap

Macally also makes a great, low-priced silent wired mouse that is also excellent. Overall I give this keyboard a positive rating because it's the best solution I've found to solve the "stop using batteries" problem. A better keyboard could still be made, but since Apple discontinued their wired products we are left to search for third party providers. All things considered Macally did a credible job of providing a replacement.

Good Product
by Denise (5 out of 5 stars)

I purchased the Macally keyboard to replace a keyboard that was twice as expensive. I wish I'd done this sooner. It was easy to install and after answering a few prompts that automatically appeared on my computer screen, the keyboard was successfully linked to my Macintosh.

The keyboard is equipped with blue lights on its upper right corner to indicate when you're in Caps Lock and when your computer is on (this light goes off when you shut your computer off or when it goes into sleep mode). I particularly appreciate the Caps Lock light.

The keyboard is not as quiet as some computer keyboards if this is important to you. It makes a click/clack sound, which I find pleasant and prefer to near silence when typing.

Defective product--completely stopped working less than 6 months after purchase
by Angela F. (1 out of 5 stars)

I purchased this product just under 6 months ago, and tonight it started turning caps lock off and on by itself, typing in different buttons than I was pushing, and randomly opened my iTunes to a voice recording I had saved. I checked my computers settings and nothing had changed, and I have never dropped or damaged the product in any way. I restarted my computer, and now the product no longer works. I sent a message to the seller to inquire as to whether I can replace the item for free due to it's defectiveness. I hope to hear from them promptly, as this keyboard has functioned fairly will with a few glitches up until this evening.

it is nice to have the simplicity of a USB connection
by Gordon B. James (5 out of 5 stars)

For an inexpensive keyboard this is a well made functional. If you have issues with bluetooth, it is nice to have the simplicity of a USB connection. If you use gaming or other apps where you need to alter the function keys (fn) you will love this keyboard. With the multi-device keyboards, using bluetooth, via the function keys, to connect to three different devices, simply renders the F1 to F3 keys as dysfunctional except for limited tasks. It got to the point where I could not use those new keyboards to play games. In addition, some of the bluetooth keyboards, even Apple's, cannot connect if there are several USB connections in close proximity. That is a problem if you have several peripherals such as hard drives, printers, etc. Simple and basic works better-consistent, reliable, usable.

Great Budget Mac Keyboard
by theiKernel (5 out of 5 stars)

Bought to replace inexpensive bluetooth keyboard from Walmart that kept causing Mac OS to crash. Prefer slim keyboard due to desk space limitations. Shopping around will lead to a few items, given that Mac accessories aren't as easy to find as Apple itself. Keyboard that costs about 1/3 of my Mac Mini purchased new. Have purchased Macally in the past from Apple retailer. At one of their locations, they told me these keyboards are largely sold to converts who buy Mac Mini. Okay, so I've been a Mac user for quite some time but would say to anyone considering a Mac without a keyboard, won't be disappointed with this one.

works fine, but lacks the solid feel of the (more expensive) aluminum Apple keyboards
by Pete Froeberg (4 out of 5 stars)
September 17, 2018

Wanted a small form factor keyboard for my macbooks that come and go from my office and 27" display. I have a full-sized USB keyboard (Apple aluminum) which took up too much desk space. I also own a compact Apple wireless BT keyboard -- which worked fine. However, it was a pain to switch BT connection between my personal and work macbooks on the fly. Seemingly required power cycling of the keyboard, etc and it's a few minute process. Since the keyboard sits on the desk and plugs into my big monitor it does not need to be wireless -- just smaller! I purchased the Macally as it was small and cheap and USB. My only complaint was that it lacks the solid feel of the Apple aluminum body keyboards. Thus, I ended getting the USB Apple keyboard anyway. I'll probably keep this as a backup as it is perfectly fine -- just not enjoyable to type on all day long. I'm a developer -- so lots of hours of typing. Might be that I'm just overly picky about keyboards.

Exceptional seller! Keyboard has some bumps
by Nik B (3 out of 5 stars)

I wanted to like this keyboard, which I purchased to use with my iMac. It's cute and lightweight and has a great feel when I type. I followed the directions exactly and made sure it was set up for ANSI use in the US. Unfortunately, on day 1, the keyboard began freezing up and showing a random selection of the letter "i" with different language symbols above "i" on my screen and document. It also started inserting random, repeated spaces or deleting what I'd typed and it would not stop (like a runaway train) unless I unplugged the keyboard.

I contacted the seller and they were super helpful. I tried everything they suggested and they ultimately sent me a new keyboard very quickly. They tried hard to resolve the problem and their customer service was impressive. I regret that the second keyboard also has the same issue as the first, although the weird "i" bug didn't start until day 2. The seller has very graciously given me a refund, which I appreciate.

I've ordered a different brand of keyboard and will give up with trying to get the Macally to work. For some reason, it is not working correctly with my computer and it's distracting to have to keep unplugging it whenever these issues arise. I do appreciate how hard the seller worked to make this right.

Feels cheap
by Ken L. (3 out of 5 stars)

I am a fan of Macally's https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B077926YZQ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00__o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1&tag=c-t-20, so I thought I'd buy this smaller keyboard for traveling.

The keyboard linked above (which has the numerical keypad) is so far superior. It has a metal bottom that provides strength to the design. The keyboard is more stable while typing. The keystrokes are shorter. And, it just feels better.

In comparison, this feels cheap and unstable. It bends down if I type to heavy- which feels strange. And, is general unstable. Although they come from the same brand and in very similar boxes, the gap in quality is huge.

Yes, this keyboard will work for my travels. But, I might be tempted to just use my Mac wireless keyboard instead- which I hesitate to use because of the Bluetooth radiation. Confused on whether this should be returned or not, but it probably should as it'll end just sitting on the shelf. I'll never want to use it.

Doesn't Rate High Against a Genuine Apple Keyboard
by Jim Allen (2 out of 5 stars)
December 27, 2018

Big problem is the lack of a usb port for a mouse. Of course, that applies to folks that prefer wired equipment, which I do. The feel of the keys is not great and the keys are much noisier than the Apple unit. Might be an OK keyboard long term but I was looking for a one that was comparable to an Apple keyboard... which is the tone of the advertising of the Macally unit, if not an actual claim. It isn't and that's why I returned it and choked down the price of an Apple keyboard again.

Faulty Keys. Unreliable typing results.
by FBV (1 out of 5 stars)
June 3, 2019

This keyboard seemed really good at first. I like that it's corded so that it doesn't lose the blutooth connection to my Mac. Unfortunately the keys are unreliable. A few keys don't work unless you tap them two or three times. Other keys at times give you multiple results. For example, I type the letter "s" once and it appears in my document 2 or 3 times instead of just once. Very annoying and it makes it take longer to type what you need to type. Not recommended.
