Great Clone Console
by scifidude79 (5 out of 5 stars)
January 17, 2018

The build quality on this is really good, it has a nice solid feel to it. The clone manufacturers are finally realizing that, in order to stay in the game, cheap thin plastics won't cut it anymore. I also really like the design of the console. Rather than copy another design, Hyperkin went with a more unique design. The gray and purple color scheme is really nice. And, they included a function eject button! How cool is that? If you have/had an original SNES or Super Famicom, you'll appreciate that. The cartridge slot is nice, not too tight like a lot of clones, and popping out carts with that eject button works great. The two Scout controllers that come with it are really nice. The D-Pad and buttons all feel right. If not for the slightly altered shape and that textured area up top, I think they would feel like an original controller.

But, apart from making a great shelf piece, this thing rocks for gaming. I have 30 NA SNES games, 2 Japanese Super Famicom games and a Super Game Boy adapter (the gray one) with 17 Game Boy games, and everything runs great. The graphics look phenomenal, for some of the games it was like playing again for the first time. Things I couldn't make out before due to artifacts on a HDTV with AV cable are crystal clear using this unit and HDMI, like those asteroids you have to dodge in the first mission of Wing Commander. Super FX chip games like StarFox look incredible, like this is how they were meant to be played. And, 2D games look better too. Text that was blurry with the image blown up before is now clear and easy to read. The color palette looks good, none of the weird coloring issues I saw in a lot of YouTube videos of the Retron 1 HD. It's all good on the SupaRetron HD. Though, in the interest of full disclosure, I should mention that every time you boot the console, you get a Hyperkin logo. It's not a big deal to me, I've been used to game consoles having boot logos since the first Playstation, but some people won't like it. It doesn't happen when you press reset, though, and hot swapping carts works just like it does on original hardware.

Lastly, the packaging was really well done. The box has compartments in it for holding everything, nothing was loose in there. Furthermore, everything was wrapped in plastic, so that was an extra layer of protection. None of the really thin vacuum-formed plastic holders you get with some clones, or that missing plastic wrap around the individual parts you get with AtGames. The console comes with everything you need out of the box. Two awesome controllers, a power cord with wall adapter, HDMI cable and even composite video cables for people who want to use a CRT. All you need are some game cartridges and you're ready to get going.

So, all in, this is a fantastic gaming machine. Playing Super Nintendo games in clear HD is awesome. At $70, it may seem a bit pricey, but it's well worth it. If playing my old Super Nintendo cartridges in HD is wrong, I don't want to be right.

A defective unit?
by Josue Acevedo (4 out of 5 stars)

Not acceptable, 3 out of the 5 games I've tested have issues that renders them unplayable. Maybe I got a defective unit. If something changes positively, I'll update the review.

EDIT: Amazon replaced my unit and it was indeed a defective item I had. It's all working as it should now, games look great with the HDMI. The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is because the cartridge slot feel too tight, feels like you're going to break the cart with all the force you have to use to insert or eject them. Other than that, I'm quite happy now with the product.

Excellent build and performance

I had some reservations initially about buying this Console, but I really wanted an easy solution to play my Super Nintendo games on my HD TVs and after a bit of research, I decided to take a chance with this model.

The build quality is really good. I can't stress this enough, especially for a console at this price. Additionally, it plays all of my cartridges with no problem, including my original cartridges and the Data East collection (multi-game cart) which I ordered at the same time. I played through 2 hours of Chrono Trigger with no noticeable lag or any visible glitches with audio or video. I found that game and every other one I tried (DKC, MK, PM) very playable at the 16:9 aspect which I was not expecting. I also tried the switch to change the aspect ratio to 4:3 and everything looked good there as well.

I was very impressed with how good the games looked on my 4K TV, better than when displaying from my SuperNes Classic. Part of that may be the features of my particular set (A Visio M series 65") but I was very impressed in any event. To my ear, the sound was flawless although there may be some games where that is not the case. I actually found the sound to be just as good as or better than the audio output from my original SuperNes.

All in all, this is well worth the asking price. The console is also packaged very well - see photos. It includes 1 Micro USB cable, One HDMI cable, one RCA audio video cable and one AC adapter. I also really love the light that comes on in the right corner when the unit is on. The cartridge eject button is a great feature as well and works just as it should. Currently, I am powering the console off of a USB hub connected to my PC, but there is an included AC adapter as well. The controllers are really good. They feel perfect in my hand and operate well with no lag at all. The 10 foot cord is a nice touch as well. I was really surprised at just how good these controllers felt. I suppose that some people got defective units which is why they posted negative reviews, I'm not sure. I will update this if the performance degrades.

Surprisingly good clone console
by Jeremy Stein (5 out of 5 stars)

Surprisingly good clone console. Would I rather have the new AnalogNT? Yeah, totally. Still a 5-star product thanks to the Hyperkin being $100 cheaper and still playing seemingly every game I've thrown at it.

Also props to the HDMI on this guy. Couldn't get a signal going to my SNES classic with newer ultrathin HDMI, but the Hyperkin never struggles. Have it connected w/ a 15 foot HDMI and always seems reliable.

Also works just fine with original SNES controllers, my ~25 year old ASCII pad, and the 8BitDo retro receiver.

Maybe not the best SNES clone, but probably the best value for the $$$.

Hyperkin has done it again! A full hardware-emulation Nintendo console clone! Here in the future, your old SNES just won't cut it when trying to connect to modern TV's...but the Hyperkin SupaRetroN HD has you covered with full HD scaling via HDMI output. As a bonus, you can even play PAL cartridges (from the UK) on this badboy... so start adding to your SNES collection again and enjoy that blend of retro and future compatibility!

Garbage

These 5 star reviews have got to be fake. I am on my second unit in about 7 months. Amazon handled my return for the first unit I ordered. The SRetron has several odd visual glitches with transparency effects and an odd blurry background effect when scrolling. For some reason the console starts to malfunction after moderate use. I take great care of all of my cartridges. The issues i would have with the unit would be that the screen would go black during mid game. An even odder issue would be graphics randomly displayed from the last cart i incerted. The positive thing I can say about the unit is that the included game pads are top notch and that I find them much more comfortable than the original snes gamepads.

Might be better than a real SNES
by sjpro (5 out of 5 stars)

I recently got back into retro gaming after several years of not gaming. Over the past few weeks, I've purchased a few of the newer HD clones in the quest for the perfect clone.....not including the expensive ones from Analog. I'm quite impressed with this console. It has a very solid feel to it. The controllers, in my opinion, are just as good if not better than the originals. As a less than casual gamer, I can't tell the difference between the sound and colors this thing generates when compared to an original SNES. All I know is it looks great, plays the games well, and does not seem too laggy to me.

OMG! I almost shed a tear when turned on the console!

Just f**** awesome! For those who are still keeping their original cartridges for collection or whatever purposes, you should buy this immediately, and stop thinking buying the original console. The whole bundle is just perfect: Great design, good graphic a ratios button, excellent initiative of letting giving the option to choose the region for games format (PAL or NTSC), the controls are quite similar to original ones (the length of the cables are just perfect). Played all my cartridges, and now I'm feeling like a teenager again.

In case you bought the console and still cannot play games, you should clean the cartridge cell. Clean them with a q-tip and Windex (thank me later, saw this in Youtube).

Works and looks awesome!

I was seriously thinking about getting a Super Analogue NT. But wow, $213 dollars shipped was a lot of money, so I decided to buy the Supa Retron HD instead. I'm very satisfied with my purchase. I've tried about 20 different cartridges so far and have had no problems. The controllers are high quality and I think the games look and sound great, and that's all that matters. For the record, I was playing my SNES games on a high quality CRT TV with S-video and original hardware. Works with multi cartridges perfectly.

I do NOT work for Hyperkin.

Avoid. Unreliable.
by MP (1 out of 5 stars)

I'm on my second system, which I'm planning on returning as well. The first I had to do a warranty replacement on as well. I'm done with it. My library of original SNES carts is very small, but this system can't play any of them with any semblance of consistency. And these are games like Link to the Past, Secret of Mana, and Super Metroid. My carts are cleaned and everything, and work on 20 year old OG Nintendo systems just fine. Do yourself a favor and try and find a Analogue instead. This little clone is terrible. Brand new, out of the box (my experience with two of these now) and it can't play a perfectly clean cart. Not at all impressed. Which is surprising, because the build quality seems much better than their NES clone which seems to chug along just fine through pretty much everything I've thrown at it.
