Travel back in time to some of the events that helped shape western history and culture

The book is set as a series of travel company advertisements that promises to take you back to specific events in history as a time traveler. Each chapter describes in detail the event you will experience as a time traveler, what to expect once you arrive, what clothing to wear, and things to be aware of for your own safety. You, the reader, as the potential traveler even get a brief grounding in language, body language, customs, and deportment for each of the historical events you're about to visit. It all gives you a greater insight into what it was like to live in these particular times. There's plenty of background on each historical event - the book actually a series nicely prepared and easy to understand history lessons

For example, a good chapter is the reader's imaginary time-traveler trip to the Boston Tea Party in 1773. The chapter starts off with a very fine description of the events leading up to the raid and then tells you how to dress to fit in with the general population. It brings you to your accommodation (The Frog Tavern in Boston) and gives you detail on living in the tavern and tavern culture such as what to eat and drink and how to behave. There's a nice description of 1773 Boston and with some surprising information such as the great number of bookstores that actually existed back then.

The rest of the chapter has plenty of information on the people involved, what happened and where, and how you will fit in as a participant. This is all typical of the facts and understanding you will get with the other time-traveler trips in the other chapters.

There are eighteen major historical events in this time-traveler's handbook, but these are just a few of my favorites: 1520, The Field of the Cloth of Gold; 1904, The St. Louis World's Fair; 1945, VE Day London; 1969, Woodstock; 1789, The Women's March on Versailles; 1599, Opening Night at Shakespeare's Globe Theater in London; AD 79, The Eruption of Mt. Vesuvius; 1861, First Battle of Bull Run.

This is an entertaining book and a good way to get a better understanding of some of the events that shaped western history and culture.

And it's a lot of fun.

This book is a great summer read and a fun escape back in time - it's like a travel guide to different events in history. Also, a perfect escape from today's political scene.

Very disappointed. A great concept that just was not pulled off. The reader is not immersed in the period as a traveler, but just given an over view of what will be seen. I'm" about 30 percent through but will likely not finish it.

A whimsical series of short historical experiences which a time traveler can participate in without throwing the space/time continuum out of whack. The perfect book to learn a few tidbits about a variety of historical periods.

There are several "trips" described in this book that really would be cool to take. The chapter on Woodstock was my absolute favorite. There are a mixture of truly riveting experiences and others just so-so. All in all it's a very interesting book and a fun way to study history.
