I've been a professional dog groomer for 10 years, and I use this product all the time. Looking through other reviews, there seems to be a lot of confusion about how to use this, so here's everything you need to know:

WHAT IT'S FOR: I use Musher's Secret to protect paws both from the salt and cold in winter (snow and ice stick to the hair between paw pads and can cause frostbite; Musher's Secret helps prevent the ice and snow from sticking), and it also helps protect paws from hot pavement in the warmer seasons. This doesn't mean that you can let them walk on burning hot pavement if they have this on, it just helps to prevent the pads from drying out and becoming damaged and uncomfortable.

HOW MUCH TO USE: YOU ONLY NEED TO USE A TINY BIT! It seems that some people are putting way too much of this on! What I have on my finger in the photo below is enough for two of my medium-size dog's paws! It should never be gloopy on their paws! It's just like putting on lotion, basically- you just put enough on to very lightly coat the paw. The product starts soaking in almost immediately; I've never had a problem with staining my couches or carpet with proper application.

PETS LICKING IT OFF?: If your pet tries to lick it off his/her paws, distract them for a few minutes until it's completely soaked in. I give my dogs very chewy sweet potato treats after applying this to their paws both as a reward for letting me and to keep them distracted from it while it soaks into their skin so they don't lick it off. If it takes more than a minute or two to completely soak in, you've applied too much.

My pup over time developed sensitive paws. Found that out on a walk when one of his paws had an open wound and he started to limp. Upon inspection all his paws were in pretty bad condition, no wounds yet but I believe all of them were heading the same way as the injured one. Guess it came with age as he never had this problem before. So it was a major issue for us, besides the fact that he needs to relief himself he absolutely loves his walks and goes Ape - "number 2" every time I grab the leash.

Wasn't many options locally so I was quite concerned until I came across this product. It's all natural, that's always a major plus. At the first application he was quite confused with the jar and grabbing his paw, but man, when I started applying it his expression was of pure relief with a hint of thank you. Over time his paws got better and stayed that way, I pretty much put it on before our walks, especially if it's rougher weather. It's a routine now where he lays down when I grab the jar. I just have to keep an eye on him for about 10 mins after, apparently it's tasty too and he wants to lick it up.

Thank you guys for providing this, I have no idea how much of a stuggle it would've been if not for this wax.

I go jogging with my dog and use this to protect her feet. Seems to work.

TMI alert: I also use this on myself to prevent nipple chafing. I run a lot, and my shirts rub me raw. This works better than Vaseline but doesn't ruin my shirts. Also, fair warning, don't ever do a Google search for chafed nipples.

I bought this to use on my dogs paws before our winter walks and it does exactly what it says. I have found another use that is amazing. My old dog has something called HYPERKERATOSIS on his nose. It's excessive skin growth that gets super dry and cracks on his nose. I decided to try Musher's Secret on his nose and in just 2 days the difference in significant and amazing. The Musher's Secret is softening the extra skin and allowing it to slough off. The before and after photo are with only 2 days of use and amazing results.

I don't know what I could add to the other wonderful reviews - - but I'll give it a shot.

I have used this product on the last three dogs I've had. Living in the Northeast, I deal with snow, salt, ice, and blistering pavement in the summers, and this product is an absolute miracle. I purchased three more containers today for my dog to give out as Christmas presents to her friends. It is that good.

In the winter, I put it on her paws 2 to 3 times a week and she can withstand the bitter cold and salty walks. In the summer when the temperature is 80 and above, I put it on her paws and she can walk on asphalt without issue.

FYI - If your dog is slipping around inside, you have put too much on! You need to work this into the pad, between the toes, and wipe off any excess with a paper towel. I have dark hardwood floors and I have never seen paw prints.

Don't hesitate to purchase this - - if you love your dog, you simply must use musher's secret to protect their paws!

Keeps paws soft

Adds instant softness to our dogs' paws. We tried lotion before using Musher's, but the paws quickly dried up. Our Lily girl loves it when this product is massaged into her paws. She is so relaxed and looks like she's at the dog spa.

Amazing product. Bought the 1lb since i have 2 medium size huskies. i live in las vegas. Currently temperatures are 115°+ their paws were dry and felt like lil razors since they were cracked. I applied enough on all four paws each and in 6hrs i noticed the difference. Their paws were smooth and moist and felt like little sponges. Im sure i i apply daily their paws will be back to normal soon. They been playful since their paws got smoother. Before they were laying down sleeping.

I also applied to their nose since its been dry as well. And so far its been good too. Very wet as it should be.

Secret EVERY Dog Owner Needs

I'm a very new dog owner of a beautiful Australian Shepard, and I was a little worried when I noticed his paws were very rough. I took action and starting doing some research and it's common in dogs of all sizes however not something to let be. Paws are so essential to dogs just as our feet are to us, so I'm very pleased with this product. It was SUPER easy to apply, 0 scent, and my dog loves when it's time to apply... (I think he knows that means we're going outside). Thanks Mushers! It's a great product.

Not effective in NYC.

Not sure if a different kind of salt is used in NYC but I applied generously to both dogs' paws, and both were wincing and holding up paws just 5 minutes into a walk in Brooklyn. And this is with me trying to steer them away from obvious spots of salt. Our "tripod" has to sit down when her solitary back leg is stinging, which is a sad sight indeed!

We also have rubber boots, which work well but pretty much require two people to wrangle on.

He's old and could've easily broken a hip

Although this product does its job and does not allow snow to get stuck in my dogs pads, it's extremely dangerous. After my dog had came inside I had wiped his paws incase of any extra wax on them. When my dog took a few steps on the tile floor, all of his legs started to collapse beneath him. He literally could not move. The mushers wax makes it so its extremely slippery on any wood or tile floors. He's old and could've easily broken a hip. Would never buy this again.
