Not worth the box it came in!

I am sorry but this Bed Rest is just not worth the money. Having the cup holder (hard plastic) where you would be resting your arms (elbows because the arms are far too short) is uncomfortable and annoying. It can not be used as a cup holder. So, it should just be removed from the product altogether. Same with the controls for massage and light on the right side arm. The arms being too short make it so you are accidentally turning the light and massaging feature on and off with your elbows. These controls should be a remote attached with a cable that sits in the right side pocket. Keep it simple! The top head rest protrudes outward too much and if you get into the bed rest sitting up you find yourself postured with your head forward. Your neck gets tired quickly and your lower back aches eventually. Only way I've found to overcome this is by placing pillows in the bed rest so that my body is positioned forward and aligned with the head rest. Horrible design... horrible engineering... horribly uncomfortable! Returning this and will NOT buy again. Sorry.

I like it a lot

I've found that you have to sit a little slumped in order to get the full, supportive and completely comfortable effect from this - and it is the best of the bunch as far as I can tell... much better than any regular husband cushions. That curved slump is what I've become used to when sitting up in bed propped by pillows. The vibrating massage is wonderful on the first setting and I really like having the low-power-using light incorporated into the design - and the fact that i can unplug/plug at the back of the cushion rather than having to hunt down the whole cord when I want to put it away after using it. I love that it folds up for storage and the side pockets - great for multiple device use and/or journal & pen, etc. The arms are flexible enough to swing out a bit from the main cushion, which I like for when I want my elbows down at my side rather than on the arm rests. This would also allow the device to accommodate larger bottoms. Overall, I am happy with my purchase. The shipping package was a little banged up when it got here, but it did arrive in the time allotted, and the device was wrapped in plastic inside of a box that was inside the shipping box so no damage was done to the device itself.

Changes/upgrades I would make:

Haven't tried out the cup holder yet, it still has the plastic seal on it, I don't plan on using it as I have a bedside table for my tea. I wish they would incorporate a cupholder lid so that I could seal it off if I wasn't planning on using it, so that I could have a solid flat surface for an arm rest. I wouldn't suggest eliminating it, as I know some people probably LIKE having an incorporated cup holder. Note that the cup holder is for mugs that are approximately 3 inches in diameter, not the jumbo mugs that some are fond of.

I also wish they'd put the controls for the light & vibrating massage on the side of the arm instead of on the top of the arm where it is now (both it and the cupholder put what can be somewhat uncomfortable hard spots in what would otherwise be a perfect bed lounging/reading experience.

If one were inclined to sit completely upright, (ha! sorry, couldn't help the play on words there) they'd need to either elongate the head rest portion and/or make it a bit larger/rounder. Since everyone has a different torso length - and I wouldn't suggest putting in a carseat like frame to lift/raise the head rest - it is likely that if any changes were made it would be to elongate the cushion another 3-4 inches.

If the head rest cushion were elongated, the flexible light would get a little longer to wrap over the top like it does now - and that would be great as well. The length now is really good, but not perfect, as putting it close enough to the book to minimize disturbing my bedmate isn't quite possible just now (because I have shoulders) as the posture used to read a book - arms cushioned on the arm rests and out - impede the positioning of the lamp.

Awful!

Horribly awkward and uncomfortable. Bad costumer service from Brookstone trying to get a refund. Would have to pay $90 just to return it unless you take it to a store, but they'll only give you credit towards another purchase. I used my credit to order another back massager plus $50 more on top of that., which arrived partially opened, not wrapped but just tossed into the Box all loose and obviously a used return that was defective and now I'm stuck with it! And out nearly $200. I cannot drive to their store 30-45 minutes away over and over as my live been really ill for months and no one should have to do that just to get a decent item or refund... Excuse me, store credit! Just to end up with another piece of junk and much time and money wasted. Lesson learned, will not order from them ever again

Last of the stiff back supports out there.
by Oscar (4 out of 5 stars)

I had for years similar HOMEDICS seat for the bed where I like to work on laptop. When it lost its shape I reluctantly threw it away with the idea of buying a new one. Right! It seems nobody is making stiff back supports anymore, everything is soft pillow cushion which gives no back support and zero head support. This brookstone is the last one remaining to make this stiff design so it gets 4 stars, but only because they still make it.

Otherwise there is quite a number of weird design flaws. Your arms will rest on a plastic cupholder on one side and on the remote buttons on the other side. Especially the cupholder is rather painful after a while. Either loose it or make it removable. It isn't even a very good cupholder as the arms have tendency to not be very horizontal. The massage is no better than my previous homedics, which means it is a feature that I can easily live without. My light really wants to be rotated the bulb up rather down, but hopefully this will change with time.

Otherwise I do like the stiff back support and the good head rest. The shipping and duties to canada cost me more than the chair itself but unfortunately there is nobody that import those directly. ANd I spent considerable time trying to locate something like this.

The best bed rest EVER!
by Libertatum (5 out of 5 stars)

I cannot possibly rave about this bedrest enough. It is spectacular. I sit on my bed a lot to watch tv since the bed is memory foam and thus comfortable. However, I could not figure out a way to provide proper back support. This is the solution. It provides good support, a back massage, a low level reading light, pockets on each arm to hold remotes, and even a cup holder. It may become one of my favorite possessions. The fabric is also a type and color that will not show every speck of dust or debris too badly. On top of everything else, it folds up in a snap and would easily store under many beds. (Not mine unfortunately but that is because of the style of my bed.)

The only downside I can think of is the size. I am small. If I wish to type on my laptop it is a slightly tight fit -- though acceptable for me. A much bigger person would almost certainly not find this bed rest comfortable. The arms will push out a bit to the side but I imagine this would cause it to wear out faster. I would suggest this for anyone who is of average size or smaller -- not big boned or heavy.

I almost want to buy a second one to put away for "someday" when this one wears out.

Too loud and HUGE
by Candice (2 out of 5 stars)

So, just to give you an idea the box that it came shipped in; was more than half of the size as my 12 yr old daughter. I thought that may it was just packages very well - it was - but the box inside was as big as the product box. If you have a queen size bed it will push over on your husbands/wifes side of the bed - it is big. It is not as soft as you may think, the headrest was well below my head and my head was hitting the light. The massager was so loud, so if you think that you can have that on while your spouse sleeps - not going to happen! My husband could not and made me turn it off; needless to say I will never use it if it bothers him that much. Yea, I coudl use a bed rest, but I can find a normal one cheaper, since the massage is not worth it, which is pretty much what you are paying for. If you have a king size bed and your spouse is a heavy sleeper or you use it during the day; this may be alright for you, but for those who planned on using it during the evening - it prbably will not work for you. I am sending it back after the approve my reasoning.

Must b 5 feet or less.
by Kindle Customer (2 out of 5 stars)

I just got this in the mail 2 hours ago. It has a smell but to me it's not that bad, at all. If u r more than 5 feet tall, (I'm 5 feet exactly) this is a ridiculous item. My head and the back part r even, w/ each other. The arms r again, ridiculous. I can't put my elbows up cuz they land right where the cup holder, on the left & the massage & light button r, on the right. Every time I put my elbows up, I met w/ cold aluminum. If my arms were average size, the arms would b way too short. It does sit up very straight but since my head meets the top of the back, I can push the head rest back in comfort. The pockets on the sides are nifty, cuz I'm a person who always has stuff they need. The only ppl who should buy this r ppl 5 feet tall and under. I'm of a mind, that they should take this off the market and correct the problems, once that's done, they should give all the customers a new 1. I bought this, in full knowledge, that it wouldn't b prudent to try and send it back. I also know I'm short & w/ all the things ppl were sayin, I would probably be the only 1 it fit. It's not horrible but it's barely passable.

Don't buy it.

I was so disappointed with this product. With it's 4 star rating, I thought I was going to be so pleased.

I am 5'1" and the arms are way too short for me. The chair is NOT soft. I imagine it was made for about $15.00 and sold for $100. Terrible. The massager is loud. We live in a condo, and I think it would keep my neighbor awake. Cup holder is useless. Light is not bright enough.
There was no unpleasant smell, but I feel the item could not have been tested on adults. I bought it so that I could read in bed, but this item is being returned.

Perfect for kids, not proportionate for comfortable adult sitting.

it's ok. That's it. I bought this so I could play video games while sitting on the bed. Problem is it's designed for a child. The photos are misleading, you cannot sit comfortably in this like you would a recliner. If I put a mug in the cup holder (or anything for that matter) it inevitably is knocked over. If you're going to put a drink in the holder, be prepared to sit and do nothing else (no video games, no reading, etc...). I am 5'5 and an athlete. My arms are not fully supported and roughly 1/3 of my arm is hanging off the edge. My 7 year old nephew is perfectly situated when he sits using it. Massage function is eh....nothing special and definitely not worth the extra money because I've used it once.

ok but not great

There is a massager in this unit. The default one is pretty strong and unique in the kind of massage it gives. So that is cool. What is annoying is the placement of the controls....right where you put your elbow. I'm 5'10" so average sized guy. If they tested the placement with children, then the controls are in a good spot but then the unit would be almost too tall for a small person. Same goes for the light. I rarely use it since the light is feeble but I notice that I've turned it on many times when I go to put it away. Also, the cup holder is very shallow. With all that depth in the arm rest, it could've gone down half way or something. I wouldn't put anything in it. Any cup except for the small tea cups you get at restaurants for green tea will fall out the first time you move.
