I take these reviews very seriously. I have bought a lot of items from amazon over the past year and find that I lean on these reviews a lot to make a decision about a purchase. I have found there are usually two problems encountered, a defective product (in desigh or construction) or a misrepresented product by a dishonest vendor. I have found both to be true here.

First, the board is not marked with black and clear squares as shown in the picture. The dark squares are etched, not black, and hard to see unless the board rests on a dark background. Second, "Elegant" is an absolute misrepresentation of the set. It is a cheap set and the casting of the chessmen is weak at best.

The board is small and it's easy to knock over the adjacent chess men when you play. The felt pads on the bottom of the playing pieces fall off every time you use the game. I've had to remove them all. The felt pads are black on the bottom and white on the top. The white shows through the checker pieces and makes it hard to tell what color the piece is. Also, if you crown a man the top checker keeps falling off because the pieces are not flat. In fairness, for the money this is not a bad deal. The problem is the vendor misrepresented the product both in the picture and in his discription...dishonest vendor!

Definitely disappointed

Since elegant is in the title of the product I figured this one would be a good choice but when I received the set in the mail most of the pieces were jumbled and falling out of their place in the package. This is glass therefore it should be shipped in much better wrappins! Not just a little Styrofoam and then throw it in a card board box ! This was a birthday gift and I am definitely not giving this as a gift I will be returning it. One of the pawns tops was completely broken off and another one was cracked. The felt does not stay on more than half these pieces. Poorly put together I must say... There was no "fragile" note put on the box which all glass items being shipped should have "fragile" on it. Really disappointed....

I bought this chess board as a birthday present based on the reviews and did not get the product advertised in the pictures. The chess board is simply clear class with the "dark squares" having a slightly higher opacity than the clear. The chess board is not two-tone at all or multi-colored. It's simply a clear square glass. The chess pieces are poorly constructed and the felt pads fall off immediately.

Not a good choice. I would not recommend this product to anyone.

This chess set clearly shows a set with frosted clear and frosted black pieces. It's a lie. The pieces that are actually included in it are frosted and clear. There are no black pieces, and I don't think they even make them anymore, and it's very frustrating. The size of these pieces isn't overall disappointing, they're almost 3" tall. That said, I would have loved if they actually came in the color they are. But they don't, so be aware. I returned these for a refund since they weren't what I ordered.

I bought this awhile ago for my husband's birthday gift, but I'm just getting to review it now. The chess board itself is great. It was smaller than I anticipated but it works as a started set. The only issues I have had with it are the felt bottoms to the chess pieces. They have almost all fallen off. They are easy to glue back on though. The pieces and board are elegant and I love the way it looks. I am only giving it three stars however because of the way it was shipped. When it arrived, the box itself was partially opened - which immediately made me worry. Upon opening and inspecting it, I was super upset when I noticed that some of the pieces were shattered. I ended up gluing everything back together, to the best of my abilities but I was not impressed with how this was shipped/handled. I was just glad that the board itself hadn't shattered since it wasn't even covered with the styrofoam when I opened it! They didn't have enough protection in the box (ie the air packets or bubble wrap) so the chess box was free to bump around as much as it wanted. I'm not sure if they are doing a better job at sending things now - but one can hope since this is a really nice set!

I was surprised at the size of this board. My fault for not paying closer attention to the product dimensions though, and will not rate this lower because of my own mistake.

The overall quality of this product is lacking. The felt "stickers" on the bottom of the pieces aren't always flush, and on my board some were actually folded and needed to be corrected. The checkers pieces are not all a uniform size (VERY disappointing there) and the chess pieces are not very tough (broke one of the rook pieces by hitting it too hard against another piece while cleaning it up). All in all it was not worth the purchase price and found its way to the trash rather quickly.

Decent cheap chess set. It's important to note this set is entirely glass with no bottom. The felt was coming off the bottoms of some of the pieces which are all hollow, and therefore have less surface area to afix felt to. Additionally, the seams from where these pieces were casted are visible. Overall not a bad decorative set, but the little flaws will bother some. Please note the size of the board, as this is approximately half the length and width of a regulation board and is reasonably small.

This chess set was smaller than I thought it would be. The glass did not seem to be as clean and there were missing stickers for the bottom of some pieces. Thankfully it came with extra stickers however at the rate of which they keep coming off I might need to have more extras. Overall it is a good chess set and I'm just glad it came on time and I find it easier to put away given the size.

Set was bought as replacement when daughter could not find the glass chess pieces that go with the glass board she already had. Only complaint is the slides on the bottom of the pieces were all pealing up, needing to be replaced (several had even fallen off already) and the set only came with 6 extra. Would not have paid anymore than the add on price I spent for it.

Yep it is on the cheaper side with the quality and is fairly small. The board is partially see-through so you will need to give some thought as to what is under the board to be able to see properly. The checkers don't really fit on top of each other.
* I wouldn't recommend this set for people with vision problems. *

Having said, it is a decent little starter chess set and cheaper than many other sets on Amazon.
