Quicker, Safer but Avoid Getting a Fake

After reading the bad reviews posted here, it seemed that many people bought counterfeit OXO avocado slicers. That's a shame, so I decided to write my own review.

Here's what to expect from a genuine OXO Good Grips 3-in-1 Avacado slicer.

I've owned mine for Over three years now. I use it fairly regularly at home.

The knife on this slicer is more than sharp enough to cut an avocado in half quickly and easily but not sharp enough to cut my skin. I've let my 10 year old granddaughter use all the time since she was 7. (She loves avocados. Lol)

Pitting the avocado couldn't be easier or safer. It has 3 slightly rounded, blunted, recessed blades that are sharp enough to grab the pit but again not sharp enough to cut skin. The finger hole allows you to push the pit out easily. As to the reviewer that said his blades rusted after 2 washes, he probably got a counterfeit. My blades are still fine after 3+ years.
**A footnote... my wife was at work when a fellow cook cut his hand pitting an avocado with a chef knife. The pit split in half as they sometimes do and the knife passed right through into his palm.

Slicing and separating the avocado is where this tool really excels. In one fast easy motion I have 7 even slices of avocado ready for my sandwich or salad. I didn't even need to scrape it out with a spoon. Again sharp enough to cut the avocado but no risk to the skin.

Lastly, the rubber grip keeps it from slipping in my hand even when wet.

The only downside that I've seen so far is that it's a little more difficult to clean than a knife and a spoon. And, yes, I can halve pit and slice an avocado with a knife and spoon, but when I factor in how fast and easy it sliced an avocado, I think that it evens out. And if it saves me or my grandchildren from getting cut even once, then yes it's worth it.

As for those who suspect they got a counterfeit, please report it. Amazon is very good at investigating and stopping fakes from being sold here.

I love this slicer and would definitely buy it again.

FAKE! Do not buy from seller Scott Bertram!

Be careful! Know which seller you are buying from! Do not buy from "Scott Bertram"! We bought our original slicer from Amazon years ago (left in the picture), it worked great until we broke it. Ordered again and it was FAKE (right in the picture)! As you can clearly tell the quality difference and lack of OXO logo. We realize our order was sold by "Scott Bertram" instead of Amazon, because his price was 10cents lower, and was automatically selected by Amazon system since we clicked buy-now and did not change the seller ourselves. Definitely returning it!

Are you an avocado lover?

This product is for you, if you even looked through these reviews to decide if you truly needed an avacodo slicer the answer is clear, your avocado obsessions clearly requires this. I will admit, you can do everything this tool does without it, you may lose a minimal amount of avacodo by using a knife instead to remove the seed and cut it open. This product is mainly for convenience sake. I will say however the convenience is uncanny, simple to use, cuts everything just how you want it, and is worth the small investment for the future of my avocado enjoyment.

If you inhale avocado's at the rate of an addict then the convenience is well worth the investment :)

Great tool for avocado lovers!

I wanted to love this avocado knife but there's a few things that could be improve with this product. I always have avocados at home so I was super excited about this product, speacilly the pit remover. Removing the pit for me it's always felt complicated if I scoop it with a spoon it doesn't come off clean and stabbing it with a knife can remove it cleanly but it might not be the safest. The pit remover if so easy to use and it works great, it gets the pit out clean, without a problem and safely. The knife and the slicer worked pretty good too, even though they're plastic the knife is sharp enough to cut through the avocado. My only complaint would be that I wish the knife and slicer were made out of metal, and perhaps for the knife to be just a bit longer. Other than that I think it's a great little tool.

Avocado? Yes, Please! This tool is awesome. Easy to cut open the fruit. Pit remover works well, just push onto the pit and give it a twist, and the pit pops right out. The best part is the slicer. Makes beautiful slices for a great presentation (see attached photo of slices, ok, one side came out perfect, I kind of gummed up the other side). The tool can then be used to scrape any remaining fruit out of the skin. Really happy I bought this tool!

What an awesome tool this is! I should have gotten one of these years ago! Living in SoCal, I get avocados from the Farmer's Market all year long and this incredible tool is just fantastic. The "knife" is plastic, yet sharp and cuts through the skin like butter! Then you flip it on it's side and place the prongs over the pit and push in. The pit comes out and you push from the opposite side and it releases right into the garbage can....no more dangerously stabbing the pit with a sharp knife to lift it out and then struggling to get it off the knife! Then flip the tool over for the third time and slide it from top to bottom for the PERFECT slices! LOVE OXO brand, and LOVE this.

Knife and spoon are better

The cutting edge on the plastic blade is awkwardly shaped and awkward to use because of the angle the tool fits in your hand. It's not much safer than using a serrated steak knife since using a knife is less awkward, and cutting yourself with the plastic blade is still possible. I have no reason to split an avocado with this thing.

The pit remover consists of three unsharpened metal blades that require a considerable amount of force to penetrate the pit and get a grip on it due to their dullness. If the fruit is very ripe, you don't need this tool, and if you do use it, you end up mashing the pit into the flesh trying to get the tool to take hold of the pit. If the fruit is firm, using a knife is much simpler and more efficient.

The slicer/scooper is a gimmick. If all avocados were the exact size and shape of the scooper, I might see some benefit to it. But it only fits into the fruit on the wide end, so you end up leaving a substantial amount of flesh on the narrow end. Plus you don't get the dark green goo next to the skin where most of the valuable avocado nutrients supposedly are, so if you want that stuff, you end up using a spoon to finish scooping everything out anyway. Might as well just use a spoon to begin with. There's a reason the example video stops just as the user gets to the narrow end. It doesn't show what's left behind after using the scooper.

So that's a zero for three on this tool. I'll stick with my knife until I find a better tool. I've had good experiences with OXO tools through the years, so this was a big disappointment. I give it two stars because it does work, even though it doesn't work well.

Received a FAKE Avocado Slicer

I received a fake item, like many other reviewers. The pictures show the quality of the counterfeit item, with unfinished edges, bad rubber moulding fit, and no of OXO logo stamped into the back. Buyer beware

I've been wanting one of these for a while but there are so many out there it took me a bit to decide.

I found this one is wonderful! And worked better than I expected! I don't think they could come up with anything better.

If anything ever happens to this one I'd get another, but this is made so well I'll doubt I'll need to.

A knife and spoon is 10 times better

I bought this thinking it would be so cool to have perfect avacado slices. Following are the reasons for a poor review.
- you cannot sharpen the plastic cutter (compared to my knives it's a blunt force object - tearing the avacado's skin
- The internal cutting blades are too thick - most of the time they just mush the inside of the Avacado
