Product Description

The Satechi Smart Travel Router / Travel Adapter with USB Port adapts to fit into four of the most common plug configurations used around the world and features four different modes for your wireless networking needs. Two options provide charge your device: an AC power port and a USB port. This compact adapter is convenient for charging smartphones, laptops, music players, cameras, e-readers, handheld game consoles, tablets, and other devices all around the world.

Router Mode
Functions as a typical router, connecting to the internet provided by your ISP and broadcasting a wireless signal, enabling you to create your own network.

Repeater Mode
Connect to your existing network and amplify it. This enables you to extend the range of your wireless network - invaluable if you have a weak connection in a room far away from your router.

Access Point
Create a wireless connection from a wired source. If only an Ethernet port or Ethernet cable is available, the router can connect to the wired connection and broadcast a wireless network that all your devices can connect to.

Client Mode
Connect to a device such as a Smart TV or video game console via an Ethernet cable. The Smart Travel Router can then be used as a wireless adapter, enabling the connected device to connect to the internet wirelessly.

Please Note
The Smart Travel Router can only support passwords containing letters and numbers. Special characters cannot be used.

Best thing for the worldly, connected traveler
by Joshua K. (5 out of 5 stars)

This smart travel router has become an integral part to both my personal and company's travel package. It functions as a wifi repeater/network extender, wireless router (allowing you to create your own network where there is none.), as well as power up to three devices at one time(2 USB and one power cord, usually 2 phones and a computer, but the options are there). The device has helped solve so many network and connectivity problems I pack it almost before my toothbrush.

My work frequently involves operating in the basement of hospitals all over the world. Usually, this means they either only have wired internet or the wireless signal is so low that it is unusable. No problem! Either I extend their existing wireless network or create my own. It is a great feeling to have all the contractors wondering how I am using my computer, smartphone, or just generally functioning and staying connected. Then I say, it my network. Then, I'm everyone's best friend. I know I have had up to 7 devices wireless connected to the device and no DHCP issues or other. Also, in a situation where outlet availability is at a premium, being able to power three of my devices with only one adapter is vital.

Provided wireless too slow? Usually the wired connection is faster and this router will keep up. You can have a faster WiFi network than those around you. It's really not necessary, but fun to brag.

The set-up and use is not exactly "plug and play". However, I prefer it this way. There is really only one step between you and your own network. But, by accessing the router itself and including that one step, Satechi has allowed you an amazing amount of options for your network. You can choose to broadcast, assign IPs, block devices, really almost anything your home router can do. I think it is highly simplified, but without loss of control or capability.

A perfectly capable router
by Chip L. (4 out of 5 stars)

Just spent three weeks traveling for work with this unit in my bag. It definitely works as advertised. Used it in Japan, Australia and the UK. No issues with functionality. Plugged the wired Internet into the router; plugged the router into the wall and Wi-Fi active (after of course, logging into the hotel system). I actually prefer to use a private Wi-Fi instead of hotel Wi-Fi for security, having my devices communicate with each other easily, etc.

I'd say that the user interface needs to be updated/simplified for novice users. If you know what you're doing, then you can tweak almost anything. I'm pretty comfortable with the concepts so I was fine. But someone who is used to working with Apple products might find the interface a challenge. Actually I suspect that many people buying this previously used Apple's Airport Express (old form factor). This is a logical replacement for that product but doesn't have the polish.

I hope in future update they really work on the UX for administering the device. It looks and feels very dated. I also hope they introduce a way to know if you're running the most current firmware. You can see what version you are running (after digging a bit) but there's no indication that there's an update available. Also the method for updating the firmware is a bit clunky. You need to basically factory reset your device before uploading the new image. I think there's a way to export your settings and then read them in again but it's not obvious and this method doesn't work if you're using an iPad as the browser.

I can't fault their support. I emailed them asking about firmware versions and got a quick reply (several actually) letting me know how to check the version and what the most recent version number was. Nice to know that there are actually people responding.

I had no issues using the USB port to charge my iPhone or iPad.

The physical aspects of the device could be tweaked in future iterations as well. I had no issues with the plugs in Japan or Australia. For those of you who have been to the UK, you know that most plugs have an on/off switch as part of the plug. This unit is big enough that I couldn't plug it all the way into the wall because the unit hit the on/off switch. It still worked. Although not an extremely bulky device, I feel it could be slimmed down a bit.

Overall, however, I'm impressed with the product. And never having heard of the company before, I would have no hesitations about buying other products from them in the future.

Routed Straight Into My Travel Bag
by Richard ED Jones (5 out of 5 stars)

The Satechi Smart Travel Router is a fantastic little doodad that I don't ever want to travel without. In addition to creating an instant wifi network wherever I am, once I connect the router to the internet by a wired connection, this little beauty also gives me power wherever I go.

The router has a USB charging space, but that's not what's amazing about this. No, what's awesome is that this router also doubles as a current adapter and can be used to provide clean current in almost every country in the world. Simply extrude the different plug configurations and insert into the outlet and you're good to go.

While the set up is relatively easy as tech items go, the fine folks at Satechi make it even easier. When the Smart Travel Router arrived at my home, it arrived coincident with an e-mail from Satechi. Included in the e-mail was a .pdf document of the user's manual and set-up guide for the router. It walks you through how to go from a boxed-up router to a plugged-in wifi network that's also charging your iPhone.

Now that's handy.

This is the second one of these I have owned. The first one I gave to my son when he went traveling in Spain as part of a school exchange program. Almost immediately, he lost the Satechi Smart Travel Router. I was devastated. He shrugged. He's young. I'm experienced and I know the importance of having a reliable tool to create a wifi network no matter the country in which you're residing at the time.

The Satechi Smart Travel Router is that tool.

This is well worth your money.

Could be 5 star if it didn't reconfigure itself
by Miguel (4 out of 5 stars)

I bought one to use in an oilfield camp in PNG (we have wired connections to rooms and offices). Worked great for a week but after a few voltage drops in our camp power supply, the unit stopped transmitting. All lights turn on, looks like its working but none of my devices can find it. Luckily I kept my old router and that keeps on working!

Very handy design, but wish it had internal surge circuitry to make it more durable.

Update - I raised the rating up one star. I got a bit curious about the unit that wasn't working (as above) so I hooked it up to my laptop (wireless mode) and reset everything, then went to the mode and reset it to Router and voila, all started working again. Not sure what happened but it appears somehow the ethernet port reconfigured and was no longer receiving the network connection through the port. After that, working like a champ again. Moral of the story - when these things stop working, reset and go into configuration and reset to what you need (generally a router) and see if that fixes it before tossing it...

One downside, since it doesn't have any internal memory to do much of any configuration, there needs to be an internet feed through it. Would be best if you could download a configuration program, hardwire to it, set it up as you want then plug the cable in. A malfunction (like mine) that doesn't allow it to broadcast internet connected wifi is tricky (I got around it by using it in wireless mode to rebroadcast another wifi signal just so I could reset it to router mode).

Made Useless due to Poor Documentation and Software Wizard
by Techgod (1 out of 5 stars)
October 19, 2015

Mechanically, this travel router and battery charger is well-designed and practical. Unfortunately, its user manual and setup software wizard are poorly designed and confusing. For example, I purchased this device primarily to use it as a WiFi to WiFi router in order to access the hotel WiFi service and use it in more than one device such as mi Laptop, Wireless Phone and Tablet. Unfortunately, the user steps to actually accomplish this are poorly explained and documented. The integrated web set up wizard is also poorly designed. When you combine these basic flaws one ends up wasting one's time and money. I cannot recommend this product for these reasons.

Now has two USB ports!
by Amazon Customer (4 out of 5 stars)

Bought this gadget, as it seemed to be perfect solution for wi-fi data connections in hotels...with ethernet and poor wi-fi signal.

Just received unit and pleasantly surprised it now has two USB ports.

Had trouble accessing web interface after changing SSID & password. After much try and error (somewhat frustrating since no instructions to do so), I think I figured out that I have to reconnect using changed SSID & password to access web interface? Also had trouble accessing web interface with an iPad; trying to resolve. Sad :( that unplugging "wipes" custom setup; I hope/imagine that a (future) firmware update could resolve...as could/would other's one-star review of SSID-naming fault? Also concerned that by default WPS is enabled; considering general securityrecommendations and the known insecurities of WPS, it's a wonder why default isn't disabled WPS.

Also sad that there's not manual (or contextual help) for advanced features/settings.

A very COOL Tool for the (International) Traveler
by GaryW (5 out of 5 stars)
March 7, 2014

I have just received this unit. On initial trial, it seems to perform exactly as I had hoped.

The device will plug into virtually any country's AC power socket, has a universal socket to accept any country's plug, a wired Ethernet input for routing communications, a 2.1A USB charging port and will operate as an access point, repeater, router and Client (Wireless to Wired) modes.

The adapter will not convert voltages so, if you are plugged into 220VAC and need 110VAC (or vice versa), you should bring a transformer with you too.

I connected the unit to a power socket and checked to verify that the device was transmitting a wireless signal (it did). I was successfully connected to the device's internal setup screens. I made no changes to the settings, but all seemed in order.

Next, I connected a wired cable to it and tried it's Wireless Routing capabilities. Although I did not give it a thorough test, when it functioned as a wire connected wireless router, it successfully operated as a Access Point. That is the expected operation I plan for its use and so stopped there.

I like the unit because in one unit, I get a power adapter (any plug to any socket), USB charging port with 2.1A iPad charging capability, and an in room wireless access point. My iPad, with only wireless capability is now assured of operation even if there is only a wired connection available.

Terrible quality, but nice for the moment that it worked.

I'm a week and a half into a seven week trip, and this just stopped working. I've since used a friend's adapter in the same outlet, and it's been fine. So this piece of junk gave up the ghost after only three weeks and four countries.

While it was working, the router was great and it charged everything well, whether in the USB ports or the plug. But, that is totally overshadowed by the fact that it STOPPED WORKING less then a month after I got it.

Trash. Don't do it.

Resets itself every few hours.
by Stephen P (2 out of 5 stars)
March 31, 2017

Somewhat easy today setup and that's good because it constantly resets itself and has to be reconfigured. I have owned it for a week and can honestly say I have to reconnect and reconfigure the router at least once a day, usually more. Aside from the connection and reconfiguring problem, the design is awkward, it's rather large and bulky and plugging it in limits the use of the outlet.

If you are looking for a very temporary solution it might work for you but nothing longer than a few hours unless you enjoy reconfiguring your network.

Great Idea for Hotel Security
by CompacJoe (5 out of 5 stars)
May 13, 2015

I received this as a gift before a trip to Australia. We stayed in a hotel with free Wifi. It was very simple to plug into the wall outlet and set up the router to work with 2 iPhones and 2 iPads. We had no problems using the router with the hotel wireless Wifi. We also used the router to charge our devices through the USB port. It was a nice feeling of security to use the password protected router with the hotel wireless. When we returned home, I bought another one for my daughter and son-in-law who are going to Europe.
