RAZOR SX500 Verses the MX650
by Tony Golladay (5 out of 5 stars)
December 21, 2016

I am impressed. I used to race motocross so I've been around bikes since I was young. I bought these bikes for my 6yr old and 9yr old grandsons. 1st lets talk SX500. This bike is the most authentic looking I've seen. The seat height is 21" ground to seat. The seat is also surprisingly wider than the 650 and the tires on the SX are slightly smaller than the MX650. The suspension is very good on both bikes. The overall look and feel of the SX500 gives it a score of 10!!. The MX650 is slimmer and slightly shorter at 20" ground to seat. The tires are also larger than the SX500. I give the MX650 a score of 8.5 compared to the overall look and feel of the SX500. I weigh 189lbs and I've rode both bikes down the street. Clearly the MX650 has more top end speed (17mph) but the SX has plenty of power at (14mph). Matter of fact both bikes have instant power when you take off. Putting the bikes together was a breeze ( took me 15-20 minutes per bike). The bikes come with their own tools to install the front tire and handle bars. The bikes are new and I have not had a chance to see how long the battery lasts but from other posts they state 1hr to 2hr max. Shipping was free and both bikes arrived before they were scheduled.

Perfect bike for beginners!
by Alexia (5 out of 5 stars)
January 4, 2016

Where do I start? The kids were in shock when they came downstairs to see these under the Christmas Tree. I rate products on what I get compared to what is advertised. Let me start with my only complaint. During assembly, it was difficult to get the front wheel onto the fork. There is a metal gasket int the center of the wheel that isn't secured so it's difficult to align everything to push the bolt through. Since I ordered two bikes, I was able to determine that this was the design and not a defective part. It comes with everything you need to asseble. Tokk me about 20 minutes each but the bikes are pretty heavy (approx. 100lbs) so you may need two people.
1. First run lasted about 75 minutes. My boys are 8 & 9 and weigh between 65 and 75 pounds each. One of the bikes ran down quicker than the other though both were fully charged before riding. I had them both ride until almost dead. Second run lasted a bit longer. Third run lasted almost 2 hours! Both bikes run equally now.
2. Takes between 6 and 8 hours to fully charge from nearly dead. This allows for a morning run and an evening run.
3. Even my younger son handles the bike well. He has "crashed" and fallen a few times and no issues picking the bike up.
4. Neither boy had ridden a dirt bike before but took to it like a fish in a pond. Within 15 minutes, both were riding like pro's.
5. Variable speeds are great. Boys slow down to turn and gun it on the straight aways. The 15mph seems accurate (and safe).
5. Bikes are sturdy! I took them to some tracks behind the house and they rode up and down bumpy terrain through brush, rocks and leaves. Only got stuck once in a pretty deep ditch.
6. Has a closed system which makes for worry free use. No place for the kids to burn themselves, get stuff snagged in the motor, fill up with mud, etc. Nice, clean design.
7. Brakes work great. Using just the front or rear is more than sufficient which gives me piece of mind in case one gets stuck or jammed.
8. Powerful enough to climb small hills and keep enough speed to stay balanced. Though the day ridding the hills cost us about 20 minutes of riding time. Still worth it.
9. I'm not mechanically inclined and was a bit intimidated about getting this since I wouldn't be able to repair it. Now I feel like a pro. It's simple to adjust everything; brakes, handlebars, brake tension...
10. We've only had them for a little while. If anything changes, so will this review. Feel free to ask questions in the comments. I'll answer whatever I can.

After One Year, STILL gets 5 Stars
by jdh (5 out of 5 stars)

Purchased two of these last Christmas for my two boys, 8 and 11. Power is excellent and the quality shocked me! My 11 year old sideswiped the chain link fence in our 1/2 acre back yard, and while it cooled him off the idea of riding for a bit, the bike didn't suffer but a minor scratch. Ran them through mud and they never flinched. After a year, the batteries remain strong, however we only plug them in overnight (and only after the battery is somewhat depleted), and we make sure they never freeze. I generally don't take the time to review products, but had to on this one. Merry Christmas!!!

2 thumbs up

Great starter dirt bike. I have twin 7 year old boys and these are perfect for them. A few instructions and off they went. The age ranges on these bikes seem way off. Got the thumbs up as best Christmas Ever!

Unbelievably cool.

This bike is built rock solid. It looks, feels and functions like a legit dirt bike. The 36 volts of power is very adequate and the batteries usually last longer than my daughter does. She loves this thing and can hardly wait to get home from school to go riding. As other have stated, the recommended age for this is higher than it needs to be. Liability reasons I'm sure. My daughter just turned 8 and this thing is perfect size for her. But it's robust enough that she will be able to ride it into her teens. Awesome bike!

NOT FOR OLDER KIDS!
by Benjamin (5 out of 5 stars)
August 4, 2017

My son is 8, almost 9. He is 4 1/2 feet tall and 73 lbs. This bike is small enough that he easily stands flat footed over it. The bike will NOT maintain much speed going up slight hills on the grass in our yard...mowed grass. I don't see how an older, bigger child could enjoy this other than on flat ground, but the size would still be an issue.

The bike appears well made, easy to put together, and the price was right. Great bike but for much younger kids than the age MINIMUM (14) given by the manufacturer. Great beginner bike for an 8 year old or smaller older child.

This Razor is Rad!
by michael prentice (5 out of 5 stars)

Ok it may be a little early (6 or so rides so far) but I have to say something about this product. Got this bike for my 8 yr old son this Christmas. Although the bike says for children 14 and above I've seen several reviews about children younger than that riding this fine. He got right on it and rode it with no problems! We've had mostly soft dirt to muddy conditions to ride on the trails behind my house up until today and the bike's big knobby tires has handled that just fine. The ground is now semi-frozen and it's been snowing. I figured with the weight of the bike (it's gotta be 150 lbs) that he'd be able to get good traction. The moto performed really well in the snow (2 inches of powder) and was able to rip into the semi-frozen ground to give him some fun roosts!

Because this bike is heavy, it won't be easy to just throw in the hatchback. I'd need a hitch-rack myself, if I were going to transport this around (which I plan to do for him). Thankfully we've got some trails to play on behind the house because it really is made for off-road.

I know this moto is a bit expensive but look for deals. I paid less than $300 about a month or so before Christmas and that price was unbeatable!! Hoping it continues to bring him and his younger brother joy for years to come.

UPDATE- 2 STARS - Bike is pretty great, but a word of caution about Amazon warehouse deals...
by Paul Lagae (2 out of 5 stars)
June 18, 2019

UPDATE (JULY 25, 2019)

I'm updating this and changing the review from 4 to 2 stars. Here's why. After going through a long process with Razor to get the bike fixed when it stopped working after 1 week, it lasted exactly 1 more week before it kicked the bucket again. Discovered a fuse was blown. Thought that would fix it, but replacing the fuse didn't get the engine going again. My best guess is the controller board was fried (which is what happened the first time). Thankfully, I saved all the packaging and was able to return to amazon for a full refund (it died with only 1 day left in the return period, lucky me).

I don't know if this is a fluke (probably is), but it has been a very disappointing round with Razor on this one. When it worked, it was pure bliss. But way too much sadness when it didn't work, and seems Razor has some QC issues to address so they don't turn out lemons. Best advice: keep all packaging, and even better, buy the protection plan.

ORIGINAL REVIEW:

My son saved his own hard earned money for this bike, and because he didn't want to wait to save the extra $80, he pulled the trigger on an Amazon warehouse deal (used-very good). Upon receiving, it looked to me that it was, for all intents and purposes, new. It was in the original box (despite a gash in the box), but the retail box was inside a larger box. Everything looked great. Assembled easily. This bike seems very solid, and I was surprised the weight limit goes up to 220 lbs, so even I could try it. Of course, I did, and it's a blast.

Fast forward 1 week, and suddenly it won't start at all. My son was anal about charging it the full 12 hours between uses (typically rode it over an hour per session). Okay, long story short, so you don't have to keep reading, Razor will not honor any sort of 90 day warranty if the receipt says "used-very good". So, if you buy it that way, keep all packaging and hope it breaks before the return period is up. Otherwise, you'll be stuck paying the repair bill yourself.

I'm still working with Razor to see if they might make an exception, since it was basically new-in-box and worked perfectly for 1 week. We'll see. Maybe I'll update when I get more info. Otherwise, I'll be boxing it back up and returning to Amazon. Either way, my son is learning a hard lesson about life's disappointments right now, and so I guess that's a good thing.

PERFECT FOR MY 10 YEAR OLD'S FIRST DIRT BIKE!
by L. Ward (5 out of 5 stars)
January 1, 2019

We just love this bike! Bought for my 10 year old for Christmas (who is a little on the solid/hefty size) and it fits him just right! I thought it might be too tiny, but wasn't ready to get him a gas bike quite yet. This is tons of fun for him! He rides it practically everyday. As you can see, it's much larger than the MX350 (Blue Bike pictured next to it). On a flat surface, the speeds can easily reach maybe 17 MPH, going uphill, not so much. I am extremely happy with this purchase, as is my 10 year old.
