don't be crankie, turn on the light!

Let there be a little light!

Okay, my previous "lantern" style light was big and bulky, and used non-rechargeable batteries. I got this as an emergency light, but discovered this is a great light when I needed to crawl around the attic, changing out splitters on my cable. it is perfect for other needs when a flashlight is not right what you need. after use, I put this in a clear plastic bag and hang it on a command hook on the back of the bathroom doors, so I will know exactly where it is if the power goes out! they are small and handy enough that I am going to put one in each of the vehicles glove box.

NOTICE: I did NOT receive this product for free or at a reduced price to make an "unbiased" review. I paid for it myself. I have NOT received any compensation to review the product. The above review is my opinion after having purchased and/or used the product.

SO THERE!

Worth the 4 stars.

I got this for a little backup light if there is a case of a blackout or if I have no way to get batteries for my other light units. This thing does work on charging other USB power stuff which I did little bit of testing and it'll take time to fully charge the stuff. So keep in mind this is small power charger that has limited output for charging you're wondering why it doesn't charging at fast rate. But there few big flaws I found that is changing the bulb if something does happen to it and the turn off sittings because you have push the button twice to turn which will ware the button out as few other ones that aren't as bad as the two I named out. I would give a 5 star rating but I had to -1 star for the few flaws.

I love the concept of this

I love the concept of this, but the top attachment to hang it broke off very easily. Also, I cannot get it to charge my iPhone 6s, it only turns it on, but does not increase the battery life - no matter how much a crank it (phone on or off). Review 2/5 stars

Update 7/14/17: we were contacted by the company because of the issues we had with the product. They are sending us a free replacement. Great customer service. Hopefully the new one will last longer and charge better! Review updated to 4/5 stars

Small product with lots of useful features!

Very flexible light! You can charge it with micro USB port or hand crank in a pinch. I tested the rated length of time it would stay on in Low mode, and it almost exactly the 4.5 hours the company stated. I say almost because it actually was still on at about 5 hours, but it was getting noticeably dimmer. I really like that it can be an area light or collapse it and use it as a flashlight for more focused purposes. AND, you can use it as a power bank to juice up another device! Like I said, VERY flexible and useful product. I don't know how much charge you would get from that, but it's there if needed. If you're away from AC power for an extended period, this could be a real help!

I'm not uploading any pictures but for size reference, I stood it beside a 12oz soda can and the lantern in expanded form was almost exactly the same height as the can and a little bigger in diameter/circumference. So, it's not tiny but it's not overly big either.

No home should be without some of these lanterns!

One of the most immediately useful items I've ever purchased! These came just in time for a 2-day power outage last winter. I cranked them for good power lighting most of the time, but I was also able to use the USB charger by hooking it up to the solar panel I'd also bought. With the panel in my south-facing kitchen window, these little gems charged and provided lots of great light in both the compressed and expanded mode. I'm buying more. No home should be without these in their emergency kit or go-bag.

Small but not bad...
by Cloyd R. (4 out of 5 stars)

I just received this light and these are my first impressions.... I will update this review after a summers worth of camping.
1---It was a little smaller than I expected at 3 1/4 inch diameter and 5 1/4 inches tall.
2--- It weighs 168grams, or 5.95oz, or 0.370 lbs.
3---Way brighter than I expected it to be and that was after only a minutes worth of "winding."

Now for the things I didn't like...

The "membrane" of plastic ,while being good at diffusing light when the lantern is open, is thin and VERY easily creased when the halves are pulled apart. I think that over time, this membrane will tear or a hole will be worn into it.
....................In Conclusion...............

This lantern cost a little more than some others on the market form other sources but it feels better made to me.

I do worry about the diffuser membrane but if or when it does fail, I think that I can replace it with milk jug plastic thus saving the lantern for use but losing the compactness of easily collapsing it. I do have some other small battery lanterns of similar design that use a spring and a cloth tube, I may look into doing something similar if the need arises.

Its the sweet one!

SO I bought this lantern to add to my camping/bug out/emergency bag kit. Its great! The construction to me feels decent and not flimsy. The light ran for around 9 ish hours on low settring and that was with a full charge. My only semi gripe is that it should come with a better type of input/output plugs for charging the light and charging a device.

Light output - My 14'x15' room was well lit by the lantern on low. much more light than you need in a tent. collapsed, the "flashlight" feature lights the way decently.

I did do a drop test. I don't know why but I felt like it, SO I dropped it out of the bedroom window down to my driveway. no cracks or anything after hitting the pavement. just a couple of scuffs and it functions great,

overall I'm satisfied. I think I'm going to buy couple more for my kid and to keep one in each of the cars for whatever.

Decent brightness, well made
by Peter Wong (5 out of 5 stars)

Purchased this to modify and install a 940nm led inside. Took it apart to see the guts and it's decently made. Battery is a 300ma hybrid lithium capacitor. I measured the voltage with the led wired in. On low: 2.78v, on high: 3.06. LED is a generic chip mounted on a star board. It's likely capable of more power and is under driven.

I was surprised to see it actually have two modes, a low and a high. The usb charging is a nice feature but even just 30 seconds of cranking will get you a decent runtime. I didn't measure it but it was on for over 5 minutes on low.

My only concern is that there's 3 tiny screws that secure the top part of the lantern down (from the inside). Over time, from contracting and expanding the lantern, it's possible that it may get pulled off. Nonetheless, it's well constructed and the $10 price tag isn't too bad.

It is super compact also
by BruceWalker (5 out of 5 stars)

My son likes to camp in a tent so I picked this up for him since it runs not only on a USB charge but also from a hand crank. It is super compact also. I usually take pics but the pics and video on the product page show everything there is to see. I highly recommend you watch the four minute video as it does an excellent job describing this flashlight/lantern.

It has and easy to use on/off button that turns it on at low. Another press advances it to high. Another press turns it off. Very simple to use. It has ports for charging via USB. It has a built-in battery so you never have to worry about replacing batteries. If you away from power on a camping trip you can reply on the attached hand crank which is very sturdy and works well.

It also has a handle on top that allows you to attach it to a hook at the top of your tent. If you prefer you can also just place it on the ground upright. It works well as a hand held flashlight or by pulling it open it converts into a lantern. Overall a really well done product at a fantastic price. Be sure you don't pull too hard when you open because I think you could damage the flexible material that converts it to a lantern. Nevertheless it is a pretty solid light and I have no hesitation recommending it.

Not bad for the price

Works as described. However if you're going to charge your phone from it, the USB only outputs charge when the crank is turning. It will not charge your phone from the battery on the lantern, but it will light the lantern with it.

When the crank is turning slow, I measured the USB outputs about 4.2 volts, and when it's turning fast it's 4.9 volts. So this is acceptable USB voltage that is regulated regardless of cranking speed. When the crank speed is zero, the USB output voltage is zero, even if the battery is charged.
