I couldn't wait for this tape measure to arrive . Imagine not having to count lines anymore.
1) using this tape as a left hander, the display is upside-down.
2) if you pull the tape out quickly, the display can't keep up. So you have to look at the tape to confirm display, which defeats the digital part.
3) amazon wasn't offering replacements for defective.

Eyes aren't as good as they once were

Eyes aren't as good as they once were. Counting off ticks on a tape measure is a pain. Recounting for accurate measure made for frustration! Enter this neat little gadget. Frustration free for the simple do it yourselfer or a honey-do list (the life or death task of hanging that curtain rod just right).

Pros:

For my wood shop projects it has been a joy. Good accuracy, fast, and consistent. No more turning that musical jewelry box into a singing ashtray for mom on Mother's Day. Large enough display to read easy - will display total inches, feet and inches, or metric. Auto-adjust button for front or back (tape case) measurement.

Cons:

Just the typical "it ain't exactly the way I want it". Display on the side would've been nice. Kind of a pain lining things up on the side and have to lean over the top to read. No tears, there. Wouldn't mind a better tape "stop and hold" button in the tape. Little buttons on top vs. big fingers - not a show stopper.

In the hands of a trained craftsman this would be excellent! Bought a second one for the wife. She just hands it to me on Saturdays and puts me and it too work. That one won't leave the house. My plan backfired.

*** Buyer Beware ***

I purchased this item on June 26, 2018. I used it maybe twice then put it on a shelf. A couple of days ago I tried using it again, and the display was missing elements (see photo), making it difficult to read. The battery tested good with a multi-meter, but I tried replacing it nevertheless. There was no change in the display. I attempted multiple times to contact the company, I was just over the 90 day warranty by one or two days. I never received a response. My suggestion is to look elsewhere if you want a digital tape measure.

There is a reason the tape measure has not changed much in 100 years!

I like many features of this tape measure but I do not like the fact it is not reliably accurate. I can see why the tape measure hasn't changed much in 100 years. A retractable tape measure with markings that meet measuring specifications is more reliable and accurate than the digital readout of this tape measure.
When the eTape 16 first arrived, I took it out of its packaging and started to measure things. Something that I know measures 9" long was measured by this tape measure as 8 15/16" and I became concerned -- I thought it was odd that the measurement was off by 1/16". I grabbed a one-inch accurate calibration target from my good micrometer set and did 10 tests of measuring it with the eTape 16. Three of them were accurate (readout said 1"), six of them read out 15/16" (1/16" error), and one read some funky 3 3/16" so I guess the sensor freaked out on that one measurement. Not good that the eTape16 readout is only accurate 30% of the time and the awe factor of this product being able to give you an accurate measurement readout quickly went away.

The good news is that if you want to do center calculation or convert the units between inches and centimeters, you can pull out the eTape until the readout shows the right distance you need in order to do the center calculation or conversion.

This tape measure is great if you are generally estimating measurements like sizing up scraps to see if they are long or wide enough to use for a woodworking or metalworking project, or if you want to just rough cut a piece of material where you are going to make a more accurate cut later.

If you are going to need exact accuracy like the final cut on a piece of wood for that bookshelf or dresser you are making, the saving grace of the eTape 16 is that there are inch measurements printed on the metal blade so you aren't stuck with a metal blade that just has human-meaningless sensor targets. Use it like a centuries old tape measure to make the accurate marking you need for your project.

Can't be trusted for precise work.

Was really hoping for a accurate measurement device. This is not accurate at all for precision work. I need my measurements to be precise. Sometimes it's accurate, sometimes not. So I cannot trust it for multiple measurements. It might be fine for wood work, but for metal work, where a 16th of a inch is huge, it's no good. The best thing about it is the divide in half feature, that comes in handy. Other than that, it's just a gimmick.

After about 6 months of use it won't go to zero making it nothing more than an expensive regular tape measure. You can remove the battery to get it to recalibrate, but right around the 20" mark it will be off by a few inches. The amount of error is inconsistent being anywhere from just over an inch to as much as 7 inches. Running the tape in and out only changes the about it is off.

Finally a digital tape measure that works like you hope it would, plus some.

I literally have a stack of tape measures, every time i go to the hardware store i check them out for something new.

After i had a weekend of family and friends over to help with my fence / deck they kept having trouble reading my tape measures. Granted, most of them don't use tape measure that often so i knew they were going to have a little trouble. After hearing them complain about reading the 1/16 and 1/8 marks i started looking for an easy read tape measure.

I came across this digital tape measure, and it looked really cool. It is very accurate, switches easily between units of measure Inch / foot / metric.

You can find the center of anything lightning fast with no brain power used.

Love the inside / outside feature. Normally you use the tape measure lip as the spot to measure too. I had a bunch of areas that the angle changed so i needed a really good measure for inside to inside. You change it to inside measure and i got perfect cuts every time.

Another neat feature, after you measure so far out you can reset to zero and keep measuring out. Very handy for multi run dimensions.

The hold feature is very handy so you can measure blindly press the hold button and get a great measure, without straining your neck to read it in odd places.

Can save the last 2 measurements for reference, that feature is great because you should always measure twice cut once. Being able to save the measurement ensures a more accurate cut, that you can go back to after getting sidetracked lol

Don't think its heavy duty or ready for a construction site, but it's awesome for home use and moderate work.

Easy to use, see, and very accurate!!

This tape measure is very practical.

I have owned one for 6 months. Unfortunately it got stolen.

The tape have some neat features that will make measuring a breeze. The top display is crisp and accurate, it also have good viewing outside on bright sunny days. The top also features the memory buttons. There are 2. You can measure and store two different measurements and recall them at any time. You can also record over, or simply delete. On one side there's a handy pocket clip and on the other there are the buttons that do all the magic.

The hold button will hold the measurement in question and the display will blink. Once you've written down or cut the material, by holding the hold button you can reset the tape measure.

The middle button let's you find the halfway point of your measurement. So if you measure 4in it'll half to 2 in. It also will work with fractions. Say you have 7 1/8 in. It'll find the middle of it.

The measuring set button will allow you to set what system you want to measure. Metric or inches. Shows feet and inches also.

The start point button will let you measure from the front of the tape, like normal, or the arrow pointing back will start the measurement from the back of the tape. This is good to measure inside corners from a window, for instance. Look for the arrow on the bottom of he display.

The tape measure is very accurate. I found that sometimes I had to remove and reinstall the battery for it to reset to start measuring from the 1/16"th mark. Otherwise it would start from. The 1/4" mark.

If you want to simplify your life get this tape.

I am buying a new one to replace the one stolen.

Like other reviews had mentioned, you may have to baby this tape a little more than a regular tape measure. But I found no problem when I dropped mine. And I have done so a few times. Only a few scratches. Still worked great!!!

Would recommend this tape measure!!

Great replacement for an education!

We sell cardboard mats that you put photos in in our photography studio. We use a measuring tape to count inventory for those suckers. Turns out most of my staff doesn't know how to read a ruler. So, instead of taking it upon myself to teach them (which maybe I should have done but I didn't think was my responsibility), I bought this instead. It definitely helps! My only issue is I wish the decimal place was two places instead of one. Otherwise it's nice that things like this exist to make up for education system!

Tape measure arrived broken (& product suggestions to the seller/inventor)
by Anonymous (2 out of 5 stars)
November 22, 2018

I had high hopes for this tape measure, but it arrived broken and wouldn't display the correct digital measurements corresponding to what the actual tape measure was reading. I have to give props to the inventor/seller. The seller was very responsive and even gave me his personal cell phone number to help me troubleshoot the problems that I was encountering. Sadly, the tape measure had to be returned for a refund, but I have to thank the seller/inventor for taking the time to offer to help me, and for promptly refunding my order. That makes a big, positive impression that I wanted to share here. Now for the product issues...There was a black-colored plastic part on the bottom of the tape measure that broke off, and was sitting inside the packaging when I opened it. As far as the product design goes, I didn't like the fact that there was no inner/inside light illuminating the digital display, a lack of which made it a lot harder to read (for someone with slightly imperfect vision - I have 20/15 vision). As a design quality, you want the digital display reading to be very large, and to stand out much better on the display, as its most likely used in both very light and very dark environments. Also disappointingly, there was no "on/off" switch (that I could see) anywhere on the tape measure. There was only an "auto turn off" feature. "Auto off" is a nice feature, but for ease of use, there should also be a large, easy-to-access on/off switch. The manual/ instruction booklet's font/letter size was SO tiny that I literally had to use a magnifying glass to read it. The tiny instruction manual was also FAR too ambiguous and confusing. There was almost no text explaining how to use the tape measure; just very small confusing diagrams with arrows, and foreign language instructions all muddled together on the same page. The manual needs to be larger and contain much more product operation info. The instructions in foreign languages should each be in their own respective section of the manual. Otherwise, it just makes it more tedious and confusing for the user to quickly try to find & understand the operating instructions. I love the idea of the product though. I really hope that the seller reads these (constructive) suggestions and comes out with a much better product version & instruction manual (perhaps a YouTube instructional video would be great too, and it'd help market the product). So, this tape measure was a really great idea, but the execution for me just tanked. If the inventor/seller implemented these modest suggestion, I'm sure that this tape measure will be much better received. I'll check back in a couple of years and see if the inventor/seller made any improvements. Many thanks.
