WAS a Brilliant idea!

We absolutely love this! Have them in all 3 bathrooms! UPDATE....... 3 out of 3 Failed within 2 months!!! You lose the Blue First then gradually the rest. I did an Autopsy and found the same thing on all 3. The connector where the LED hooks to the cable is a pressure connector (No Solder) The copper from the 4 wires only touches the LED leads by about 1 mm. The copper corrodes you lose contact. You lose light. Not waterproof at all. Your sticking it on the lip of a toilet, Don't you think the Humidity is going to get in there? Such a wonderful concept destroyed by shoddy construction! Oh Well .... It Was to good to be true.

Not so "Wonderful" - Updated as of 01/02/17
by Carol J. (5 out of 5 stars)
March 14, 2016

When I originally purchased this item, I had no idea that it had been on Shark Tank. After seeing it on Shark Tank via Hulu, I decided I should write this review so you don't waste your money. I purchased this product here on Amazon a few months ago. The reason I purchased it was because I thought it would be so great to not have to turn on the lights to go to the bathroom at night when I'm half asleep. The idea of this product is solid, but it's design is screwed. First of all, it won't STAY on the bowl. The suction cups wouldn't stick, so most of the time I'd be picking it up off the floor and reattaching it to the bowl. Touching something attached under the toilet seat grosses me out and in turn I'd end up turning on the light to wash my hands. Kinda defeats the purpose, doesn't it? Second of all, the batteries wore down completely after one day of use because the motion detector DOESN'T work right. So it lit up my bowl ALL night long and wore out the fresh batteries I had just put in the product the day prior. I finally gave up on the dang thing. I hope "Mr. Wonderful" is happy with the $19.99 I wasted on this product because I am still peeing in the dark.

Updated: I am updating this review because IllumiBowl sent me a new product to replace the faulty version I had originally reviewed here. The latest version of this product works MUCH better. I have had it installed for about a month with zero issues. The way that the Illumibowl product adheres to the toilet has changed. No more suction cups! The product hangs over the side of the toilet and turns on with motion detection. I've had the product installed in our master bathroom for about a month now and it is working flawlessly. It comes on at night when it detects motion and then turns itself "off" when the motion is no longer detected. I left the light color in its default setting where the color changes randomly. This has worked perfectly. Where previously I had problems with it staying lit too long or not turning off at all and wearing out the batteries--- this is no longer a problem. The light simply goes on when motion is detected and then turns off when its not. The instructions suggested installing Illumibowl facing the doorway so that it can "see" you moving. I installed it as directed and it works just fine. Based on the improvements in how Illumibowl performs, I have decided to upgrade my rating to a "5"!

It's pretty nice, but has fatal flaws. Cost me $27 with fixes.

Edited 2/18/17: I've thrown out my original Illumibowl unit. But I purchased a new one today after reading they've improved it, especially the way it attaches to the toilet. But I may use this one beside my bed. I'll lay it on my side table so that it will light my floor when I get up in the middle of the night. Our bedroom is pitch dark. This will help me a lot. If I like this new and improved Illumibowl, I might get another one for my toilet.

EDITED months later: This thing JUST WON'T STAY ATTACHED TO THE TOILET BOWL. Nothing I've tried (see below) has worked. Even my velcro trick is a flop. i wouldn't purchase this thing again, and for that reason, I'm downgrading my rating from 3 stars, to 1 start.

I'd give this item 5 stars if the four suction cups holding it to the side of the toilet bowl actually stayed stuck. But they don't. Twice a day, they're popped off. The unit is hanging there, pathetic. The suction cup INSIDE the bowl with the little light comes unstuck, too. I'd read that others have had the same problem. One lady used little Velcro spots. I thought about that. But that's another expense. I have a tailor's glue by Dritz. It's used to prevent raw edges of fabric from fraying. So I added a drop of this clear liquid 'glue' to each suction cup, but within a week, it's unstuck again! I tried Elmer's glue. Same thing. The unit comes off within a few days. The problem is that the suction cups are crap. Period.

So I was forced to purchase white self-stick Velcro dots, a $7 expense. So now this beautiful little contraption has cost me $27.

I also think the unit should have included some kind of directions, but there wasn't a single thing in the packaging. It wasn't even packaged in a box. It was a piece of cardboard with a clear hard plastic bubble glued over the face of it, keeping the unit in place. The only directions were a few idiot diagrams. For the price of $20, I'd expect some directions saying how in the deuce you get the colors to rotate and how to make a particular color a 'constant'. So that is another PITA.

Edited to add: May 10, 2016 > I've had my Illumibowl set up and installed since the day or arrived (March 16, 2016). The 2-AA (new) Duracell batteries already went kaput! Had to install 2 new batteries. So for me, the batteries only lasted 54 days. Not very good IMO. However, my bathroom has no windows, it's dark all the time when the light is out, therefore every time I even walk past that bathroom door in our hallway, the Illumibowl sensor triggers, and the bowl lights up, not to mention when I enter the bathroom. So if your bathroom has windows, your Illumibowl sensors are only going to react when it's actually nighttime. Your batteries will probably last 3 times longer. BTW, as I mentioned, if your Illumibowl triggers ON but you turn on the bathroom light, the Illumibowl goes OFF.

Personally, I like that fact that my Illumibowl comes on when I walk past my bathroom door. And it doesn't stay on very long with no further motion.

Not Satisfied - Zero Stars
by Swartzie (1 out of 5 stars)

I bought this item about 4-1/2 months ago when it appeared on Shark Tank. At first, I really loved it. But after three weeks, it fell off the side of the tank. Well, I cleaned everything back up and stuck it back onto the toilet. Another couple of weeks later, it was on the floor again. Long story short, the best I'm getting out of the suction cups is 2-3 days. About a month ago, out of frustration, I almost got out the duct tape, but I decided that I wasn't about to stoop to that level. So, I just laid it on top of the marble countertop next to the toilet and pressed down on the suction cups. It's still there and hasn't moved or fallen on the floor. It still lights up the toilet, but just not as well as when it was on the side of the bowl. Not what was advertised, but at least it is still working. I'm not satisfied with this at all, so my recommendation is don't waste your money on this item.

Edit (8/5/2016): Ten days short ofl 5 months of operation, it now quit working. Stays on constantly, will not automatically shut off. As soon as the batteries wear out, it's going into the trash where it belongs. This purchase is a complete waste of money. I'm changing my review to ZERO stars.

Edit, 10/1/2016: One month ago, I was contacted by the manufacturer reminding me that this product has a lifetime warranty. So, I took them up on their offer to replace the product. A couple of days later, I received the replacement. I now have a light that works, but it still does not stay attached to the toilet. I still do not recommend this product.

Great concept... not impressed by the implementation
by M-W (2 out of 5 stars)
January 21, 2016

I thought.... why can't my toilet be a night light, so I hopped on line to see if someone already did it and to my delight, found someone had. Instant purchase. I totally wanted this product to do what I hoped it would. But I've already futzed with it for 20+ min and still no joy. I'm sending it back.

Pros

Great idea

Perfect intensity

Uses standard batteries

In theory, a good mounting scheme

Cons

Despite playing around with their suggestions to reshape the suction cups with hot water, they held very poorly. Yes.. the surface I was applying them to was clean.

The end of the cord opposite the LED is inadequately strain-relieved. It pulls open and will admit water.

Given the attention paid to mounting in their support area, I suspect that mounting can be an issue for others beside me. I think I'd suggest a longer cord so you can do something behind the seat hinge without straining the cord. Just a suggestion (35 yr product designer). If the idea were implemented more usably, I'd have gone 4 stars.

Fun but suction cups keep causing disaster
by run slow, finish whenever (4 out of 5 stars)
August 30, 2016

Most of my four stars comes from the fact that this product is highly entertaining, not only for kids but for adults as well. The light is actually quite bright and the intervalling colors are quite fun to watch while you're going to the bathroom in the dark. However, this seems to have a difficult time staying put in the toilet bowl and can get a little gross because of where the product is sitting. Anything that goes inside your toilet bowl is going to be a bit nasty. It's kind of weird to clean and we actually ended up taking it out because we were worried about getting bodily fluids on it and not being able to clean it properly. Also, the suction on the battery pack didn't like to hold onto the toilet bowl very well and ended up trying to fall into or out of the toilet constantly. This was pretty cool when it was working but when things are falling into the toilet it takes some of the fun out. It was fun for the kids to walk into the bathroom and have their toilet bowl turn rainbow colors on them in the middle of the night. If there was some way to keep the contraption out of the toilet directly and out of any danger of being Peed or Pooed on, I would probably give this five stars.

Neat concept, poor execution
by Ichimonji10 (1 out of 5 stars)
October 4, 2016

This is a neat concept, and when the product was new, it turned out to be very handy. I could walk into the bathroom in the middle of the night and not ruin my night vision.

Unfortunately, there's major issues. First, the suction cups don't work all that well. It's hard to get the device in place, and even harder to get it to stay. Second, the device started demonstrating reliability issues - the light might turn on and off way too fast, or the light might quickly cycle between colors before quickly turning off, or the light might be way too dim to be useful. Yeesh.

Novelty item with Functionality:-)
by CactusJack,Top Contributor: Woodworking (5 out of 5 stars)
February 13, 2017

I love simplicity and this bathroom night light/ toilet bowl light is just that. Simple, effective, a fun and functional novelty item:-)

I picked it up just to give it a try and have turned out enjoying both the way it works and how helpful it actually is. And here it is: a battery powered night light that has 8 different colors that can either been selectively chosen, or allowed to change from one to the next. You can either directly turn it on or allow the motion sensor to activate it and installing it is as easy as hanging up a jacket:-)

You might be asking, just how much light can something like this give off? Can it really illuminate enough of an area to be functional? The answer is a resounding YES!!

In our 1/2 bath which is 3'x7' when on the light illuminates 40% of the space with a warm glow (color dependent) and is more than adequate to see how to do your business, wash up afterwards and navigate in and out of the space without bumping into anything. NOW, mind you, that's if the toilet lid is up, if it is down then what you get is a "sci-fi" type glow which is reminiscent of the cylon troopers from battlestar galatica:-) The photos I've added show Toilet up.

Over all, I'm very happy with the purchase. The item is small, easy to install, provides a useful necessity in a home setting and even makes for some great conversations when friends are over visiting and experiencing it for the first time:-)

I'll update over time to let y'all know how long these "AA" batteries last.

Love it
by Happynewmom (5 out of 5 stars)
March 16, 2016

I Love it.. I was a little worried at first when i saw all the postings about it not working or falling off. But i wanted to try it, since my 5 year old loves things that glow and always wakes up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom...

It works great.. Love that it turns all different colors. I have had no issues with the suction cups yet. HOpefully i wont ever have issues. Will see.

but so far its great.

UPDATE 4-5-16. I guess the reviews were correct.:( The suction cups started falling off.:( Its still hangin on, by the insude suction cup, but the one for the main box that hangs outside the toilet, is definitely not working.:( sucks, becuase this was a great product/idea.

Works as advertised....for a week or two
by chaedog (1 out of 5 stars)
January 17, 2016

So installed this a couple days ago. We purchased this mainly for our 4 year old son. He's pretty good about not turning any lights on at night when he has to get up to pee at night (we have a few night lights throughout the house to light his way). He thinks its really cool and loves to pee at night with it, and it doesn't disturb us since we have it set to green the light doesn't wake us up. (our bathroom is connected to our bedroom, we leave door open for cats)

My only real gripe is that, and I'm sure we're not alone in this but we don't have any windows in our bathroom so pretty much 24/7 its dark enough to activate this light. The motion sensor is pretty sensitive, I've adjusted its position numerous times, but pretty much anyone walking into the bathroom turns the light on. We like it though, and I'll most likely pick up some AAA rechargeable batteries to swap out. As long as I don't have to replace the batteries every week I'll be happy.

Works as advertised, my son loves it (who we bought it for) so all in all we're happy! If I were to change anything about the product it'd just be to make it not so sensitive to light since most bathrooms are somewhat dark to begin with.

Update***
1/30/2016

So after the first set of batteries died in the device I put a brand new set of name brand batteries in and only light that comes out of the device now is a very very dim Red. Doesn't work at all now, I've swapped the batteries out with another set and still low red light, so this product didn't even last two weeks!

BIG WASTE OF MONEY DON'T BUY!!!!!!!!!!!
