An amazing and useful device
by ByteMe (5 out of 5 stars)
July 24, 2015

This is an amazing device. I purchased this 2nd Gen device via the FLIR Amazon marketplace as soon as it available. It arrived today and I've already identified two bad power strips and a transformer, a leaking duct vent, and can see where the blown-in cellulose insulation has settled in the walls to about the two foot height. I also intend to use the pictures as evidence that the window installers failed to seal the windows properly. I'm going to document my house with it and use the pictures to develop a more intelligent energy savings plan. It really is a great tool for a home owner.

UPDATE: I've owned my FLIR ONE for 16 months now and it has become an important tool for repairs and upgrades to my home. I have been able to diagnose plumbing, electrical, HVAC and insect related problems. The device helped me to focus my efforts during a recent insulation upgrade and verify contractor work for several other upgrades. It has helped to squash a contractors denial of inferior work and get the work corrected. Sure, you can take kewl photos of your pets and friends, but this tool is much more useful than a selfie-cam. I'll attach several more photos of things where the FLIR ONE has really made a difference in my work around the house.

Cool and useful, but useless when the battery dies

While I actually like this device, it stopped working just after a year from purchase and it appears to be an issue with the battery. I took it apart (it was out of warranty) and thought I'd look for a different battery on the internet but I didn't have any luck. Anyway, for the amount of money that you pay for this device, it should have a battery that can be replaced. Until FLIR addresses this issue, I cannot recommend this product. I've even emailed them to ask about a battery replacement but I've yet to receive a reply.

Bottom line: Avoid this product until they change the design

Expensive disposable camera.
by Shadowcatcher,Top Contributor: Photography (1 out of 5 stars)

Most expensive disposable camera ever.

Purchased from Amazon September 22, 2016. Worked great for fall 2016 and winter 2017.

Tried to use on January 4, 2018 and it wouldn't work. Tried charging over night without success.

Camera is as dead as the proverbial door nail and will not operate even with external power attached.

This is a toy, not a tool. Save your money and do not purchase.

A year and a few months later the FLIR ONE is junk.

Meanwhile the SEEK Thermal (purchased through Amazon November 19, 2015) still works fine.

Addendum:

After writing this review, I contacted FLIR customer service and sounded off.

Much to my surprise, I eventually wound up with a new replacement unit.

However the battery is still not replaceable and therefore this phone attachment is still an expensive toy, not a tool.

Worth every penny

I purchased this less than a week ago and in that short time it has proven invaluable. I did not purchase through Amazon because it was a 2 month wait and I could get it in 3 days from west marine for the same price. I recently purchased an old house with hydronic radiant floor heat (i.e. The house is heated by water flowing through pipes in the cement floor.) It has 14 different zones controlled by valves in the basement. These zones were not properly balanced which resulted in the temperature in some rooms to be in the 80's while other rooms never got above 60. The valves for controlling the flow of hot water to each zone were unlabeled and in order to balance the system I had to determine which zones were controlled by which valve. This required turning individual zones on and off to see which areas were affected, which had proven impractical, if not impossible, since the large thermal mass of the concrete floor meant that it takes 24+ hours after a valve is opened or closed for the temperature of the floor to change enough to notice via touch. The flir infrared camera changed that, now when I turn on a zone I can clearly see the pipes in the floor heating up after an hour or 2. It may only be a 0.1 degree temperature difference, which is impossible to distinguish from touch, the flir has no problem picking it up. It also enabled me to find the high point vents to bleed air out of the system as the vents have a pipe running up inside a wall to the valve in the attic and the flir picks up the heat from this pipe inside the wall. I have also found another cool use for the camera is that if you take it out in the yard at night you can spot raccoons and possums hanging out up in the trees. Not sure what the actual value of that feature is, but it's pretty cool nonetheless.

DOA

I bought one a couple of weeks ago. Wouldn't work out if the box. Charged it and tried on several devices. They all gave the same message: connect the flir and turn on device. I returned it and Amazon gave me an Amazon gift card for the return. Not pleased with that.

Incorrect model label and product
by GavelBuyer (1 out of 5 stars)

Product part number on site is 435-0002-02-00 and outside box says same but inside the box part number is older model 435-0002-01-00. Seems like a bait and switch. First generation is not what I am paying for and is discontinued.

Unit arrived on time and I downloaded the FLIR app. The app would ask to turn on the device and without fail, it would crash the app and go back to the home screen. I tried hard resets, downloading again etc and nothing. I tried calling the company and besides their limited hours, they don't answer the phone. This item is going back. We have the older FLIR model for the iPhone5 which is great. I guess we will keep our iPhone5 and stick with the original.

My new bionic vision
by jim b (5 out of 5 stars)
July 14, 2016

Tons of fun. Works really well. I feel like superman with bionic vision. Lots of cool uses. Has about a 30 minute battery time which is good for me. The case is minimal but neat. I wish it had a little extra room to buy the adapter (p/n on amazon:B00KH08E1A) to work with my otter box defender case. Another minor note: The on/off switch is "touchy" in the sense that the device powers on very easily when you're handling it

Bought it in Dec 2016, used it couple times, iOS app crashes all the time. At most i had 30min of use out of it. Now it does not even charge the battery. Waiting to see what warranty replacement will do...

Waste of your money, I would wait to see how the new generation ones will hold up, they are being heavily advertised, I would not jump into it.

Battery Dead and will not charge or start
by Bruce W. (2 out of 5 stars)
May 4, 2018

This camera worked great for a VERY Short time. But once it set in a drawer for a few months and the 12 month warranty was out, it no longer would turn on or take a charge. Flir Technical support indicated that if you did charge this device evrey couple months the battery would DIE, not just be needing a charge but totally dead. Now I have to pay to get it fixed, a cost for something that should not be an issue. In addition, since the battery is dead, you can not even use it attached to a charge cable, it says it is in charge mode and will not turn on. So, unless you are buying this to use all the time, don't do it. It is money that will be lost and Flir just does not care!
