GREAT, with a serious caveat.

So, the Asus Strix 7.1 is a good headset, let's get that out of the way.

It's overall quality is breaching right into the audiophile space and the 7.1 surround sound works well, however.

I spent the greater part of a month and a half trying to find a software equalizer that would play ball with a USB based headset, finally finding one in "Equalizer APO" as the base levels in the headset by default vigorously drown out the sound some times, especially in the soundtrack of the newest Doom (2016) I curved the bass levels down and all was well. Except not quite.

The 7.1 as by default is as follows, the front channels are all very rich, but the rear channels feel thing and tinny, I spent another few days trying to figure out how to equalize the individual channels in Equalizer APO and eventually got the bass levels in the back channels turned up to match the forwards, this only applies in a 7.1 surround situation such as in a game, but it was really distracting for as a good example for the 7.1 surround. --

Infront of me, Dinosaur, STOMP STOMP STOMP CRUSH CRUSH~ Dinosaur walks behind me

Pat pat pat, krish krish, if that makes any sense, before the adjustment the back channels were light sounding, and to anyone without the know how nor the patience to figure out how to adjust these things, you will be cross.

The only reason I give this headset four stars still is that the end result of my efforts of marvelous, and that the microphone, though I don't use it a whole lot, actually has truely active noise canceling, not the BS crackling that the other 90% of "Gaming" headsets have.

It's hard to find true 7.1 multi-driver headphones of a decent quality, the only others that are around this quality would be the Razer Tiamat, but the mic isn't as good and it doesn't have much of a strong bass signature.

Take that for what you will.

All show, no go.

I have never been so underwhelmed by an product priced this high compared to other items of it's type. Before getting to the bad, I will say that the headset is very comfortable. While it's quite large compared to most, it doesn't seem too bulky and sits over the ears and on the head well. The sound quality is not great, but I expected that going in with virtual surround sound. You will spend at least a half hour playing with the settings to make it sound like you're not in side of a tin can. Oh, but that's AFTER you spend an hour downloading new firmware and drivers that fix bugs the headset had on launch. The update programs are awful and it's not readily apparent how to use them, so if you're not somewhat technically inclined have fun with your headset volume being so low you can barely hear anything even at max volume (yes that's an actual problem this headset had on launch).

Once you get past all the updates, drivers, and settings tweaks you are ready for your gaming! Except don't expect to be able to communicate with another human being on Teamspeak because the mic is absolute trash. I can get over the fact that the mic floats about 1/2" to the left and right even when securely seated in the female receptacle but the fact that this mic cuts in and out every 2.43 seconds on most voice chat programs is beyond forgivable at this price. So, get ready to waste another few hours of your time uninstalling and reinstalling every driver you can think of associated with sound and recording on your computer then uninstalling and reinstalling Ventrilo and Teamspeak over and over. Huh.. Well that didn't work. Okay, let's surf the ASUS tech support forums, surely there's an answer there. Oh no... This can't be?! Just a hundred other people complaining about the same problems with minimal response from manufacturer regarding the issue. I've given up on fixing it and switched back to my Turtle Beach headphones. I don't even want to RMA this thing because I don't want another one just to run through that nonsense to have it do the exact same thing.

The only reason this set isn't getting 1 star is the aesthetics and comfort level of the set. Buy at your own peril and only if you don't like speaking clearly to anyone.
(EDIT) Still no solution from ASUS or any interest in remedying the problem. Changed to 1 star.

I could not believe just how much better this was compared to theirs

I didn't think these were anything special until I went to my family's house and used their "gaming" headset, and WOW! I could not believe just how much better this was compared to theirs, or my old Turtle Bay. They feel awkward at first but the comfort becomes apparent soon after. I always liked cloth/fuzzy ear cups, but now I will use the faux leather any day of the week in comparison! The lighting is subtle but pretty, the control box is a little more complicated than I would like but still very easy to learn. MY ONLY GRIPE, the cable from the headphones to the control unit is a little short for my taste, but other than that I like them a lot!

Mic is no longer working after 11 months and poor customer support
by Jun (1 out of 5 stars)

I purchased this 04/2018 and used it regularly for gaming. The overall quality was good and I was happy with it. However, today (03/2019), the mic suddenly stopped working. I have replugged the mic to the headphone multiple time and my friends only heard about those electric current sound and nothing else. Seems like there are some issues related to wiring inside the headphone. (I am not sure.) I have to use an external mic instead.

I would not recommend this product to anyone else unless this issue is fixed.

update: I contact ASUS and it seems like they admit this might be a defect from their product. But they asked my to provide the serial number before they can file a case. However, there is no serial number on the back of my device since I received it. I guess the only place that has the serial number is the original box, which no one will really keep it for such long time. I told them that I cannot find the serial number since there is no label on the back of the device, they asked for a $35 diagnostic fee (yes, ONLY for diagnosis and my product is still in their 1-year warranty period). Well play ASUS. I will never buy any product from ASUS.

If you still want to buy this product, remember to write down the serial number if there is any because I guarantee something will break after you get it within a year!

ASUS Strix 7.1 Gaming Headset: An Audiophile's Dream Come True!
by MTR (5 out of 5 stars)
May 17, 2019

I LOVE this headset because it allows me to listen to the 8 channel (7.1) format "Surround Sound" Digital Albums of Contemporary Christian Music that I give away for Free on Social Media. They are Compatible with my other two sound systems operating on my Windows 10 Pro (64 bit) equipped PC. They are Extremely Comfortable to wear. They have Phenomenal Sound Quality due to the 10 Individual Speakers (5 in each earcup). The sound volume for each pair of speakers is exceedingly simple to adjust. As a Whole, they sound better and have the Frequency Response of Headphones costing Twice As Much in comparison. The ONLY drawback I've found is that they require two USB 2.0 ports if a user desires to use the Built-in Noise Cancellation Feature located in the Console which does an Excellent Job of outside noise cancellation. One more Plus that's Important to mention is that they come with a Detachable Boom Microphone with Outstanding Sensitivity which is Exceedingly Clear in Sound Quality for use with applications like Skype. I Highly Recommend this Headset for any Audiophile looking for Exceptional Sound Quality in listening to DVD Quality Music at a Very Affordable Price!

ASUS user for 20 plus years reviews the latest issues with ASUS Strix 7.1 headphones and replacement
by giovanni caffale (5 out of 5 stars)
June 1, 2018

This headset worked between December 17th 2016 until today 06/01/2018 perfectly. The care that we used this was superb treatment. (meaning no bending of wires, no pulling at all on the headphone cord. The only stress on cord was the turning of your head from left to right. )No scratches, was constantly sprayed for duct with a can air, Clean with a fiber cloth. The problem came when the headset could hear everything but no audio detection. After troubleshooting the issue the midway component that the headset plugs into isn't working correctly. Strix was totally uninstalled including all audio drivers and reinstalled. The removable mic was exchange with a wireless one that we have that has also gone out (no power or charging and won't turn on).It was less than a year old but is a pain to get it replaced or fixed. These headphones stopped working and the wireless Strix headphones that we bought stopped working. We've spent over $350.00 dollars for the best headphones in the world and now we are stuck with nothing. We've spent more than 5, 000.00 dollars on ASUS equipment and now everything is starting to go after one and half years. I remember when headphones use to last for 7 years at least. Now they barely last a year. Don't waste your money on these because it's like you buying a brand new car and your insurance says it isn't covered. I switching my brand of handphone unless they come up with a realistic repair for 189.dollar headphones. Now they aren't worth 50 bucks. If you buy the extra warranty through Amazon if available it still doesn't fix the problem because a year later your back in the same boat with ASUS. I may even choose to give up Amazon because they don't enforce warranties of products they push through their platform. They say they don't have anything to do with the manufacturers warranties but they will allow them to sell items that breaks down through their platform and that's on their public image of how they do business. I'm only going to try one more time to return this and get the wireless ones fixed Strix 7.1 wireless headphones. If they don't. It the last purchase we're making on Amazon. Good luck.

MICROPHONE SHOULD BE BETTER FOR THIS MUCH! Otherwise these are perfect!
by Joseph Vici (4 out of 5 stars)
August 13, 2015

This would be a Five Star if the microphone worked well, but it doesn't. People I talk to on teamspeak and skype are all asking me what I did to my mic (coming from the Astro A50). I recorded my voice and it does sound grainy with static. I would think that the mic would be at least as good as the cheaper mics my steam friends play with being a $200.- headset. Maybe I just received a bad mic which can happen with any headset. If Asus were to swap mine out with a new one without charging me and if it were to actually sound normal I would instantly change this to a 5 star.

Performance VS Price is not worth the money
by Miles (3 out of 5 stars)
February 9, 2018

Let me start off how well the headset looks and feels. It fits the head perfectly with no issues besides the foam piece leaving room around the ear itself, the controls is easy to use but what I don't like about it is the price to performance wise, it produces little to no bass when watching shows or listening to music nor gaming, then 7.1 seems ok for my second gaming headset and I bought this after a wire mistake (i crushed the volume control wire with my chair) with my Razer kraken pro 7.1 (2015 edition) but in comparison I'd rather of had bought another Razer kraken pro (2015 edition) but anyways the Asus strix 7.1 feels sturdy but performance wise I'm not happy about.

DO NOT BUY THESE!@!!!
by ooupla2 (1 out of 5 stars)

I own nothing but Asus products and I purchased these and they worked great for about a year. Shortly after that the left side hinge where the headband meets the earphone snapped off. I contacted asus customer service and was told it is customer damage. What a load of poop. If you google broken strix 7.1 headphones you will see nothing but the same issue...STAY AWAY. They sound great but build quality is garbage and they dont help you when they fail

Well done ASUS!
by Jeff Kaiser (5 out of 5 stars)

I have owned Zalman 5.1s, Psyko 5.1s, Logi G35s, and Tritton 5.1s (among others, less relevant to this review).

Great: Quality of the base, interface, connectors, and driver.

Great: Quality of the headset design, function, and comfort.

Great: Quality of the audio, options, volume, clarity, and performance.

I now prefer wearing these even when I don't need to isolate my game sounds from the outside world. The external audio isolation is really top notch, and nearly up to what some active noise cancelling headphones provide. The stretchiness of the tension band is just about perfect for me.

My ONLY complaint would be that while the level indicators have lights on the top of the control base, the function switch dial on the face does NOT have any illumination. It's hard to see in a dark gaming environment which selection mode you are in. Very minor and solved with a small lamp. ;)
