Beware!

I recently purchased this rice cooker and my husband tried to cook rice in it for the first time yesterday. The attached pictures speak for themselves. Even though this is advertised as a microwave cooker, the thing melted in the microwave and caused terrible fumes we are still trying to get out of our house. I would definitely steer clear of this product.

Love love love this awesome M-Cuisine microwave rice cooker by Joseph Joseph. I have been a fan of JJ's product design for a long time and have owned a few of their products. But this little microwave rice cooker was a curiosity buy. Saw it on Amazon and thought...This could be neat if it works. Being Chinese, cooking rice in a microwave is not a new concept. In Asia, there's plenty of single serving microwave rice packages sold in every grocery store. But when I saw this on my Amazon suggestions, I was instantly intrigued. The M-Cuisine microwave rice cooker worked perfectly. I really appreciate the attention to details with this product design.

How this work:
-measure the amount of rice desire for your cooking with the provided measuring cup per the cooking instruction fold out.
-wash your rice with the inner black pot which also serves as a strainer so you can wash your rice and then put it back into the main pot. The inner strainer pot also has a folding handle that folds down perfectly in place.
-empty all water from the inner pot strainer. Leave the cleaned wet rice inside the inner pot.
-add water (refer to the ratio of water to rice portion formula in cooking instruction)
-place inner pot/strainer into the larger white pot.
-place the cover over the main white pot.
-place the spatula over the cover, align and twist the spatula clockwise into the open slotted area of the main pot.

The spatula also helps defuse the steam from shooting upward inside the microwave. The hole for the steam on the cover is aligned directly under the spatula which helps redirect the pressure of the steam sideways (horizontally vs vertically). This helps keeps the inside of the microwave nice and clean...Genius!
-place pot inside microwave.
-microwave cooking time for 1 cup of rice is 15 mins.

Please note, the pot is extremely hot after cooking so make sure to use proper heat-resistant oven mitts.

Also, the steam during the cooking process will create a very thin white film over your cover (looks a bit like a thin layer of dried white elmers glue on your hand). At first glance, it will look like your cover has been ruined from the heat of the microwave. But don't panic. This is normal thanks to the genius placement of the spatula. You can easily clean this off with a damp towel and the cover will look beautiful again.

This is a fantastic and must have cookware for any kitchen. You don't really need one if you have a rice cooker, but it is so convenient to cook rice with the M-Cuisine microwave rice cooker. This really is a game changer. Everything you need is all contained into one unit. I really appreciate that.

Another plus having this microwave rice cooker is you can bring this over to a friends place who doesn't have a rice cooker. With this little guy, you can have freshly cooked rice for 2-3 guests in 15 mins. Easy peasy.

This really is a game changer.

You don't realize you need one until you have one. Then you can't live without one.

This is a game changer!!

I hoped this would work because I love all the JosephJoseph products that I have purchased. Well, it's amazing! I've purchased 2 other types of microwave pasta cookers-they were a disaster. Neither worked at all-mushy pasta, etc. I used this last night for the first time-it worked perfectly. I made approx. 3 servings of cavatappi and all that was required was the pasta and water. Popped it in the microwave and didn't touch it again for 13 minutes. When I checked the pasta it was perfectly cooked and I just dumped the water out-done! No waiting for a large pot of water to boil (and boil over!), no checking the pasta while the water keeps boiling (ouch!), no straddling a basset hound with a huge pot of hot water to dump it out in the sink, no strainer, no mess on the stovetop, and only one easily cleaned cooking item. WOW! Pasta more often now! Of course, still need to have a big pot for crowds since this only does 4 servings but that's ok with me!!

Not As Simple As You Might Think
by Oakley (3 out of 5 stars)

This is a deceptively simple little cooker with rather complicated instructions ... at least for this non-cook. The idea is certainly easy: add water and rice and microwave. However, the microwave time is different for each type of rice and each amount of rice. Two pages of microscopic charts for these times and amounts are "conveniently" included. So I located my reading glasses and a good light, squinted and cooked according to the instructions for wholegrain rice, one serving. I got a tough, hard, inedible little black rice-like mass. Then I noticed that all instructions were for an 800-watt microwave and mine is 1.7 kw. So for one person, for wholegrain rice, I need to do more experimenting ... and once I have that recipe mastered, I need to figure out how to adapt it to wholegrain rice for six, then white rice for six, and on and on. Maybe a pattern will emerge. Yes, ovens and stovetops have similar challenges, but I really think they would be much easier to solve than microwave inconsistencies. I am pretty sure I am not going to be cooking rice for company any time soon, though I hope to get up the courage to perfect the single serving wholegrain recipe, preferably by the time this bag of rice is depleted.

NEXT TRY: I reduced the microwave time by half because my microwave is more than twice as powerful as the instructions are for ... and for some reason, this time, the rice disaster was even worse. The inner pot melted into the charred mess of rice, completely ruining my rice cooker. Perhaps I should have reduced the power, not the minutes. Also, I notice that the time for wholegrain on the charts seems way out-of-whack compared to the other types of rice, so maybe there is a misprint.

BOTTOM LINE: Love the idea, so much so that I ordered another cooker. I intend to proceed with great caution and ultimately master the single serving. I don't think I'll ever use it for company.

One solid peace of high quality material for a safer and sturdy design
by Tina (5 out of 5 stars)

This item was a dream to use! I have used other types on microwave pasta cookers before and this one beats them in several ways. The main advantage this one has over all the rest is the inbuilt strainer, while most have lids with straining holes the lids are most often of a softer plastic that distorts from heat after a few uses becoming more and more difficult to put on and use as a strainer. This unit is one solid peace of high quality material that makes for a safer straining process and the sturdy design makes moving the unit in and out of your microwaves much easier, especially with a lipped edge that makes gripping the item when full of boiled water very easy. As with all microwave cookers don't believe the advertised cooking times on the product box. Always follow the cooking times written on the pasta package, make sure to stir in the middle to ensure the pasta doesn't stick together. I usually use boiling water from my kettle but this is not require just add an extra 2 minutes if you are starting with cool water.

Disappointed

**Update 9/2/2019- I've used this cooker probably 20x since I purchased it and a thin layer of plastic still peels away from the top every time from the steam. I can only imagine what kind of chemicals are being absorbed by the rice from the plastic. I'm going back to glass

I am disappointed in this product for several reasons. 1) The first time I used it the steam from the rice caused a thin layer of plastic to peel away from the lid possibly getting into the food. 2) The locking paddle/spoon on the top is just goofy. It would be a nice addition to the set on its own but to force you to use it to lock the lid down is just dumb. 3) There are 4 separate pieces to this unit that have to be washed after every use. For years I just used a casserole dish with a glass lid in the microwave. 2 pieces washed and done. 4) The unit is obviously scorching hot when the rice is done and there aren't any handles or place to hold it that isn't hot and you have to use pot holders. This is partly due to the dumb locking spoon. I'm passing on this one and would you do the same.

Worth paying more for this one

It's the most expensive microwave rice cooker I tried, but it works the best too. My dogs keep chewing these things up, but I'll definitely keep this one away from them. I use it with the strainer always in place, regardless what I'm cooking. For rice, I do the same as with all others, and use about 2.25 times as much water as rice. This is the only rice cooker I've used where I didn't need a plate under it to catch water. Any extra water is under the strainer still inside the cooker, but there usually isn't any. I kind of miss extra water though because it's good for sauces. The rice and food come out perfectly as seems to be the case for me with all the microwave rice cookers, but this one just feels better. I mean the material feels better and more flexible/sturdy. I've used it with and without the spoon locking the top and I'm not sure there's any difference. The only thing I don't like about this one is that I need to use a knife or fork to get the lid off, hooking through one of the vent holes. There's no way to grab the tiny knob in the middle of the lid after cooking because it becomes slippery.

LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS RICE COOKER

Saw this microwave rice cooker on tv, decided to give it a try because my rice never comes out right. Used it the first time with packaged spanish rice with the seasoning....after putting it in, I kinda freaked out because I was afraid the yellow saffron would stain the cooker.....SURPRISE, no stain AND perfect rice! I have used it at least once a week, perfect rice everytime and truly easy clean up. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THE JOSEPH JOSEPH MICROWAVE RICE COOKER. If I could give it a million stars, I would!

It's okay

My rice cooker broke and I didn't want to spend $50+ for a nice Japanese one. I saw this and though I'd give it a try. Overall I would say it's ok. I have better rice results when using a plain pot.

The cooking time instructions are for an 800 Watt microwave. I have a 1000 Watt microwave. To adjust cooking times to your specific wattage, use this formula:
(800 W / (Your microwave wattage) W) * time on instructions

First divide 800 W by your microwave wattage, which can be found on a label inside your microwave. Then multiply your results by the time on the instruction sheet.

Example using a 1000 W microwave and 14 min: (800 W/1000 W) * 14 min = 11.2 min

Then convert the 0.2 in 11.2 min to seconds: 0.2 min * 60 sec/1 min = 12 sec

So the new time for the original 800W 14 min in a 1000W is 11 min 12 sec

The cooking time on the instructions sheet give ranges, ex. 8-10, 12-14, etc. I experimented with the different cooking times. Using 8-10 min as an example, I found that cooking for 10 min gave better texture results versus 8 min.

I added a photo of the new conversions for my microwave. I have only used this for Jasmine and Long Grain Rice, so I don't know how the other stuff will turn like.

After putting it in the microwave it leaves a film on top of the lid. This is annoying. If you leave it to dry it will turn flaky.

It is easy to clean though.

Great for quick pasta dishes
by chicagodave,Top Contributor: Photography (4 out of 5 stars)
December 10, 2018

This is a great cooker to have for quick, one or two person pasta meals. I've done fettuccini and spaghetti thus far and both turned out great. The included instructions are needlessly complicated, metric and in tiny type, so it makes your first time using harder than it needs to be. They list all these different types of pasta but the vast majority of them use the exact same timing and water amounts! I pretty much just redid the table in english units and made it a lot easier to use. I have not used it as a rice cooker so I have no comments on that aspect.

There are a bunch of different versions of this same cooker concept and there were two reasons I went with this one over the others. The first is I like the no lid design. Makes it easy to clean and store. The second is previous experience with Joseph Joesph microwave cookware. Their stuff has always done well for me and wears well, so I'm optimistic this one will do the same.
