Great kit, even for a person who never builds models

Love how this came together. I don't build models but the directions were pretty straightforward for me. Took me about 2 1/2 hours including having to disassemble it a bit to replace a toothpick.

One word of advice, make sure to wax the hinges of the box lid! (See photo) That made a huge difference in the smoothness of it opening. It tended to jerk open at first.

I would like to attempt some of the other models

The cut-outs are precise, some edges may need to sanded down to remove any rough edges. The biggest issue my set had was the axles, which are provided as toothpicks. I used paraffin as a gear and axle lubricant per the instructions, however the toothpicks diameter/gauge is too large, and requires the wood to be compressed to fit. I broke all of the spares trying to fit the axles (with the supplied 'tool'). When I came down to the last toothpick, I had to shave it a bit with a razor to ensure I did not break it. Unfortunately, some of the toothpicks were very slightly bent in the insertion process, which may affect the mechanics of the device. I took the time to ensure everything squared up, however it does not always smoothly open or close completely using the mechanism.

I purchased this as a gift (presentation). I wanted to gift something hand-made, and as a have very little artistic ability, using a kit was preferable to me. I added a piece of jewelry inside of the presentation box as the true gift. Unfortunately, the mechanism did not work smoothly and dulled the effect a little (although the recipient still appreciated the effort!). I would like to attempt some of the other models, but I am hesitant and would welcome any ideas to help in the future.

Patience and Finesse Required
by mark (4 out of 5 stars)

I assembled this for my 7 year old grandson as a Christmas gift. He really likes it and was excited to discover how all of the parts worked together.

It took me about 2 hours to assemble it. You really have to pay attention to the orientation of some parts as you assemble it. The instructions are clear, and the parts I assembled incorrectly were my own fault for not paying close attention. There were times when I thought I would break parts fitting them together. It definitely takes patience and a little finesse. I chose this Ugear model to start with because it looked like the easiest of their product line.

I had some binding on the axles (toothpicks) even though I used wax as suggested in the instructions. I disassembled the gears and opened the holes up slightly on the housing using a small drill bit and a pin vise. I waxed the holes a second time and re-assembled. It works flawlessly.

I understand that some expect this to be "plug and play" out of the box, but even when I build plastic models there are parts that I drill, file or sand to get a better fit. That's part of the fun for me when building models. If this is your first experience building a model, it may frustrate you a little. Patience. Finesse. You'll get there and it will work when you're done.

This was my first model from Ugear and I enjoyed the build. I'll be ordering additional models in the near future.

Fun putting together and a good conversation piece.

This was the first type of 3D puzzle I've put together. The directions are professionally (better than Ikea) illustrated and language independent. The packaging is very efficient. The wood is top grade laser plywood and the laser cutting is precise and clean (no residue smoke burns). Take time to pop out parts, minor tearout with tabs, but nothing critical. No glue required, but you you'll need a candle (we used Minwax) as lubricant. My wife and I had fun with it, taking our time it took about 2 hours (along with a glass or two of wine). The interlocking mechanisms are pretty ingenious, very impressed. I was concerned that the axels were made from toothpicks, but after a month or so of playing with it, it works great. The gears mesh nicely and it has momentum (from flywheel). Everyone who's seen it has been compelled to play with it. Instead of business cards, we put Altoids in it and made it a candy dispenser.

Toothpick Frustrations UPDATE
by Sandra S. (1 out of 5 stars)
July 31, 2019

The toothpicks are very very tight, and are supposed to be. You must use the "0" tool to push the toothpicks into the various parts.

The directions aren't clear.

Do this: Put one end of the toothpick into the hole in the tool (it's next to the word UGEARS). Then hold the tool and toothpick with 2 hands, like a syringe, with both thumbs pushing the flat side of the tool. Use 2 fingers on each hand to hold the part steady. The tool pushes the toothpick into the part.

This sounds complicated, but if you can visualize a 2-handed syringe, held in 2 hands, and both thumbs pushing the plunger, it will make assembly much easier.

I copied this from another review. I was ready to give up...but this worked!
1. Push the toothpick in very, very slowly.
2. You must use REAL wax

UPDATE

A toothpick broke off inside an already-assembled section. I drilled it out with a Dremel tool. Very frustrating.

Great kit, great fun.

Amazing fun to build, instructions are very legible and easy to follow. When the pieces are popped out of the template (it's literraly laser cut out of a sheet of extra thick balsa) there are little bits that should be sanded down and cut using an x-acto knife, and then the real tricky part, installing the toothpick like pieces, these can be tricky. We did break one during assembly but it worked out because later in the process there is need for one to be cut short. We used a candle and rubbed it on the toothpicks before installation from that point on (didn't realize instruction meant to wax BEFORE installing, thought it meant to wax AFTER, our mistake) and after that it worked flawless. This is a great kit and we look forward to buying/building more of these.

Can't wait to build another one!

This was a lot of fun to put together. It was pretty easy and they give you the tools you need to put it together. They do suggest you use some hard candle wax to lubricate the moving parts. They also give you extra parts for the thin tooth pick pieces that can break more easily. The end result was great! I will definitely be purchasing a more complicated version soon.

Everyone who sees it work has nothing but compliments and it looks pretty good on my desk

I bought one to use as a business card holder. Everyone who sees it work has nothing but compliments and it looks pretty good on my desk. It wasn't too tough to assemble but it did require some adjustments to get the gears to spin cleanly without slipping. Overall it's a well engineered product. I am worried that it will warp someday and the gears won't spin cleanly but so far it's been fine.

A fun and relaxing way to pass some time

A fun and relaxing way to pass some time. I thought initially that these UGears mechanical models would be cheap and difficult to assemble. I was wrong on both counts. They're very well put together and rigid and the instructions are easy to follow. At least for this one which is the only one of the three I bought that was assembled the only two things that I needed that were not included were a candle to lubricate the gear axles and an utility knife.

Awesome model!!

I was impressed with the quality of this product. I was actually surprised at how well the cutting was done and how well each of the parts came out of the plywood sheets. There were several spare axles included to replace any that break (I did break one during assembly). I was able to assemble completely in a little more than half an hour and it looks great on my desk...
