An UNSOLICITED review: An Excellent Product
by William R. Drake (5 out of 5 stars)
February 14, 2016

Please note that I did NOT receive a free or discounted product for writing this review. I read all the reviews before ordering an Ivation "kettle" and was concerned that about 90% of them were written by people who were compensated for them. This does not suggest unbiased reviews. Nonetheless, it looked like a good water heater, the few unsolicited reviews were very positive, and my wife and I wanted one that was stainless steel, so I ordered it.

This is an excellent product that is easy to use and has very useful features.

As other reviews mention, you can easily select the best temperature for your water (depending on the type of tea, or etc.), and the unit will keep the liquid at that temperature for up to two hours. This is pretty amazing, and my wife is finally able to fix a great cup of jasmine green tea every time. If you want to utilize this option, you first push the "start" button, which lights up, then keep pushing the "set" button until the desired temperature option lights up, then, to maintain that temperature once it is attained, push "warm," which lights up that button. When the temperature is reached, the "warm" light continuously flashes. While it is on "warm," you can remove the kettle from its base and put it back on and the warming feature will continue, with the lights still on, until the two hours are up. To turn the heater off, simply press the "start" button, at which point all lights go off.

If you heat water without using the "warm" feature, once the temperature is reached, the unit shuts off and the "start" and temperature lights go off.

At no point does the heated water touch plastic, which was a factor in our ordering it.

Keep in mind that you are asked to have at least ½ liter of liquid in the unit in order to use it. However, it does have a feature that switches the unit off in case you accidentally turn it on without any liquid. A plastic gauge underneath the handle shows you how much water is in the container, although it can be a little hard to read.

The "kettle" heats relatively quickly, but it is a little noisy when it approaches the desired temperature, which is probably the case for many water heaters. The front of the lid lifts up with the push of a button so water can be added, but the lid is not removable. The product is not dishwasher safe and should not be immersed in water. Vinegar can be left in overnight for removing mineral deposits. Any remaining stains can be removed with a damp cloth, but the fact that the front of the lid does not lift very high up would make this a bit challenging.

We had hoped for a longer cord, but it extends 29 & ½" from the edge of the base, which seems fairly standard. Both the base and the kettle are made of polished stainless steel, which makes the unit attractive. The base is 6 & ½" x 6 & ½" and the height of the 1.7 liter kettle and base combined is about 9 & ½". The kettle itself is about 9" high. There is a heating unit that protrudes upwards from the center of the base and inserts into the bottom of the kettle when the kettle rests on the base.

This is an excellent stainless steel water heater. The fact that you can easily set and maintain an ideal water temperature is remarkable. I highly recommend it.

Mostly stainless interior, boils quickly, but lacks a "ready" bell, and does not default to the temp
by J.C. (3 out of 5 stars)
August 28, 2016

Very good, but has a few flaws.

The good:
1. It boils water very quickly. Quicker than other electric kettles I have used.
2. It has 6 temperature settings which is far better than 1, but not quite as good as 7. Great for most things though.
3. The footprint is not very big.
4. it has a place to store, or wind to shorten, the cord.
5. It is mostly, though not completely, stainless inside. Unlike most kettles I have had or researched, the interior is nearly all stainless. There is still the level window and filter frame that are plastic, but really not much.
6. Has a keep warm function that will keep the water at temperature for 2 hours.

The bad

A. The pot remains silent when the water gets to temperature. It would be really nice to have a bell, a buzzer, something that would let you know that the water is ready. Instead, you have to remember to come back, which is not always what happens.

B. There is no memory of what temperature you set the pot to last time you used it. Every time you turn it on, you have push the button repeatedly to set the temperature if you want it set to something other than boil. This is a small thing that quickly becomes highly annoying.

C. The connection at the bottom of the pot is really small, which makes it noticeably more difficult to get the pot seated where it belongs than others are.

D. The lid is somewhat difficult to open. There is a singel button on the top of the lid that you push to retract two pins (? - they resemble the retractable part of a doorknob that latches the door shut, whatever those are called) holding the lid closed. There is a spring action, but if you don't get both pins to retract then nothing happens. There is no way to tell if they are retracted until you let go. Often it takes multiple attempts to get the button pushed just so, so that both retract and the lid opens. A flawed design.

Overall, for the price, I think it is good. If it had a "ready" chime, and didn't require constant button-pushing to set the temp, I would think more highly of this machine. As is, I am not sure I would buy it again.

By the way, if you have a stainless kettle and find brown spots start to form on the inside bottom, they are probably not rust. You should be able to remove them with citric acid (available in the canning supplies section at the grocery store). Add 1 tsp to a liter of water, bring to a boil, turn off, and let it sit for 20 minutes. Rinse and the spots should be gone.

After barely 2 months of use, it apparently had an electrical melt down. The company wants me to pay
by KNHNEKVT (1 out of 5 stars)
April 18, 2017

We bought this in January, used it two days a week until mid-April, and then it apparently fried itself. It was plugged in, heating up water, when it blew all the GIFs on that wall of the kitchen and threw two circuit breakers. It no longer works. We need a full refund.

UPDATE - so Ivation is telling me that to get this replaced, I have to pay to ship it back. It fried itself past the 30 day window, I'm told, so I'm stuck with paying them to make good on their product. Just a note - in the time period we used it (from Jan 31st to mid-April) we primarily used it TWICE a WEEK (on weekends). So, allowing for an occasional mid-week use, we probably used it fewer than 25 times total.

I have filed a complaint with Amazon. I will instead buy a Cuisinart as a replacement .

SECOND UPDATE - Amazon just processed a full refund to me. I logged in to buy a Cuisinart kettle, so thought I would close the thread on this at the same time. Thank you, Amazon, for fair refund policies, even when you weren't the company selling the item.

Went from aThree-Star to a One-Star Rating after a few more months of use!
by readMeMe (1 out of 5 stars)
April 1, 2016

As one reviewer already mentioned, the heating base is unnecessary large ... and, the stainless top of the base does absolutely nothing for me. It is also very difficult to see how much water is in the kettle due to the yellowish "milky" plastic used. I bought this because I did not want to pay the $20 more for the Cuisanart kettle I had before this one. When I need a replacement for this, I may consider going back to Cuisanart.

Updated on 11/14/2016 -- pictures are worth a thousand words! Took these three photos this morning after taking aa sip of water and felt something in my mouth ... it was a piece of the filter. The first photo shows how the filter has disintegrated ... and the next two also need no explanation.

Heats water well, with worrisome design flaw
by SacCat (2 out of 5 stars)
June 18, 2017

This product performed as described, but comes with a design flaw I couldn't live with: the plastic window showing water level never fully drains. Even when the kettle interior has been dry and unused for a week+, there's still residual water in the gauge window. Because it never fully drains, the permanently moist environment can't be cleaned and may harbor undesirables. Returned due to this problem.

BEWARE!
by Agricole07 (1 out of 5 stars)
March 30, 2016

Kettle broke just a few days after the 30 day return deadline. Issue seems to be the electronic controls; when the "start" button is pushed it no longer turns on, just flickers and then stays off. At any price the product should last longer than 35 days; at this price with only a 30 day warranty I should have known better. Beware!

Basic tea kettle but with temperature settings
by E. A. Smith (4 out of 5 stars)
January 22, 2017

I have also used the similar model tea kettle made by Cuisinart. I purchased this Ivation because the Cuisinart model has failed in various ways. Two of the Cuisinarts I've had quit turning themselves off after boiling the water. And one of them the ink on the buttons wore off.

I like that both models allow you to set various temperatures for different kinds of tea and beverages. I like that both models are stainless steel with very little in the way of plastic that touches the water. They also both heat up water rapidly.

But there are differences as well. The Ivation tea kettle does not make a sound when it reaches temperature it just quietly shuts off. This means you have to wait around and watch the thing rather than being able to leave the room. The Cuisinart does sound a chime when it gets to set temperature and turns itself off or to hold warm. Ivation loses a star rating for lack of chime feature. The Ivation does not remember your last temperature setting, the Cuisinart does do so. Ivation makes you scroll through the temperatures until you get to the one you want every time, unless you were only using it for boiling, in which case you might as well get a simpler cheaper tea kettle that only boils. Ivation loses a star for this.

The Ivation is less expensive and has all the different tea temperatures one needs so I give it an extra star for that.

Stylish and excellent performing kettle
by J. S. Orlando (5 out of 5 stars)
March 21, 2016

I really like everything about this little kettle!! It is stylish, takes up very little space on the countertop, brings water to temperature quickly, is ergonomically well designed and is very intuitive to use. You literally plug it in and start using, no instruction manual required.

There are less expensive kettles on here, but what makes this worth the extra money to me is the kettle's ability to hit (and hold) specific temperatures depending on what kind of tea or coffee you are making. It is all easily selected by the push of one button as you cycle through the temperature options. If you are tea or coffee snob and you like precision in your temperature then this is for you. :)

It works quickly, faster than my microwave (my old way of heating water for my tea and French press) and a much more pleasant sound as the water quickly heats. I have even used it to heat the water I cook with before putting it into a big pot on the stove and waiting several minutes, tick, tick, tick...

It's a right handy kitchen gadget any serious tea or coffee drinker should have!

Would not recommend: Broken top, hot to touch, no beep when hot
by C. Fournier (2 out of 5 stars)
August 10, 2018

I've owned a few electric kettles. When my Cuisinart PerfecTemp died I wasn't ready to spend $$$ to replace it. Tried this for half the price and have regretted it since (we've owned it 3.5 months).
1) The pin that holds the top to the main carafe started pulling out immediately and we would just push it down manually, but it's gotten worse and is annoying. I can't slide the pin back in anymore.
2)The carafe is very hot to the touch. Yes, it's a kettle, but my cuisinart had insulation that kept it hot and also protected you from accidentally burning yourself.
3) There is no notice/beep when it reaches your requested temperature so you have to watch it.
4) It doesn't remember your temperature last used so I have to push the button through all of the temps to get to my desired temp each time.

These are annoyances for most, and maybe you're willing to put up with them. The broken lid (and escaping scalding steam) is too much for me. We're looking for a better quality replacement.

So disappointed
by Annie D. Boyd (1 out of 5 stars)
November 7, 2017

I am so disappointed. The pot worked great at first. After a week or two I'd have to press the start button 4 or 5 times before it would operate. I'd have done something about it but I was traveling. Now I have a $40 kettle that doesn't boil water. This happened 3 days after the return window closed. I liked having different temperatures, but I'll go back to the cheaper pots because they usually last for years. If your start button starts to fail, return it.
