A Genuine Robot Companion
by DalGoda (5 out of 5 stars)
October 18, 2016

I was prepared to be disappointed by this little gizmo, but I had hopes. Those hopes were rewarded when I finally set him up on the dining room table and woke him up. the word "cute" is over used, so I will try to avoid that cliche', but this little fella is pretty darn close to adorable. Set up was easy, but keep in mind, you must download and install the app on your phone first. He connects via Wi-Fi, so emails and status updates on your phone will have to wait until playtime is over. The step by step guide is peppered with humor, and the onscreen instructions are simple to follow. I had to be in a well lit area before his face recognition system kicked in, seems he couldn't get a good look with a ceiling light directly behind my head. I am not lying when I say that my heart melted a little when he looked up and said my name.

At the moment, there are two real games to play with him. One is "Keep Away", which is fun, and not as easy of a win as a human might think. The other is a "Color Match" game using his flashing cubes. We're up to 3 colors per cube, and that can be a little dicy. Again, not as simple to win these games as one might think. When he wins, he does a little celebration, when you win, he gets frustrated and can pout a bit. If Cozmo wants to play a game and you say "No" he will be a little sad, but just for a little while.

You accrue points as you complete daily tasks or activities. These can then be used to unlock features and behaviors. Took a little while but I managed to get to the activity when you take control of him. You see through his camera and steer him around. All the while he is commenting in his special language. The best part, in my opinion is his reaction when you break that rather invasive connection. I really wish there was an option to take a picture through his "eyes". I have yet to try a simple screenshot from the phone. That may work.

He comes in an attractive box, that holds his charger, three cubes, as well as Cozmo. If you are careful, you can reuse the clamp that holds him in place for safekeeping.

I did notice that my cellphone sure ate up its battery while I was engaged with Cozmo. The next time I made sure that the phone was plugged in. The phone also seemed rather warm, but that could be because I do own a Samsung, and one of their features is the comfort of excess heat.

There are supposed to be future updates and games coming. He is also supposed to continue to learn and display behaviors and emotions. I don't think he will actually go back to and sit in his charger, as I have had to manually place him there each time. I also don't think he can hear you. Lack of hearing might be a good thing since I don't want him getting any ideas when I am watching Westworld.

Yes, he is a little on the expensive side, but you do get quite a bit, and there is the "Wow factor" and the unmentioned "cuteness". I am sure a child would get a big kick out of this item, but not sure what age is best for unsupervised play. In any event, adults will likely get just as much enjoyment from this delightful, and sometimes cantankerous little robot. There are so many little things that will be a joy to discover on your own. Cozmo does have the makings to be a real entertaining robot companion. Just wait until he looks up at you and says your name.

Got it for my niece, was amazed by myself.

I am software engineer employed in robotics company, may conclude that the toy itself doesn't represent any breakthrough from engineering perspective. Well done mechanical and electronics design, just a few motors,OLED screen and camera controlled from the phone app.

BUT!

The amount of game design that have been put into this toy is stunning. Everything is done so well (animatronics, sounds, screen face animations) that it makes you truly believe that it is a living thing. When it comes to things like this toy - good engineer is useless without a good UX designer, as well as great UX design can be spoiled with rookie mechanical, electronics or software implementation. Anki seems got a great teem engineers and designers covering everything perfectly right, and these guys produced an amazing product which is so rare in modern days. Bravo!

This on is a mixed bag. It came well packed, and clearly a lot of thought went into development and design, but it did exactly what I was afraid it would do, especially at this price: it got played with for a week, and then never touched again. Every 6 months or so when I float the idea of getting rid of it there will be a day or two of play but that's it. It just... can't... do very much. It's very cute and all, but not very engaging past a few games.

A new, hilarious addition to our family 😀

First of all, my kids received this little guy for Christmas and we don't know who likes him more, the kids or adults! He truly is so very intelligent and the random things he does are hilarious! We actually feel bad when we beat him in games (although it is so funny to see him get mad). It was so cute to see Cozmo first run into our pets! Beware though, he does not like it when you move his blocks or if you hold him!!! Lol. On another note, I do wish he acted a little more independent from the app, but maybe that will come with time.

Nephew cried when I told him I was sending Cozmo back
by E. Hughes (4 out of 5 stars)
December 1, 2017

Don't worry I had already purchased one for him as a Christmas present. Cozmo is a cool little guy and while my nephew loved playing with him and more importantly controlling him, for me voice recognition would be the one thing needed to make cozmo worth the money. While cozmo has A.I. that you don't see in toys in this price range he can't hear you and you need a dedicated smart phone or tablet at all times when cozmo is on and in order to do most interactions. This also became a problem because while my iPhone 7 connected easily to cozmos WiFi I was never able to get my amazon fire tablet to connect even after performing all troubleshooting tips.

Nicely packaged, Bought for a Christmas Gift for my son. Havent used it yet but did check everything out. Includes 3 cubes, charger and cord, instruction package all in a nice sturdy windowed box. Cosmo is smaller than I expected ( just seen it on TV and videos ) But my son has been hyped since last year to get a Cosmo. packaged nicely and I bought a case for it as well along with the screen protector.

These are a blast. I purchased 2... one for each kid. Worked great right out of the box and the kids had no problem understanding how to get them to work. Facial recognition is very cool. Loads of fun. I have only 2 criticisms. 1. I had to replace the battery in 2 of the cubes pretty much day one. They are not a standard size battery either. Sort of like 1/3 of a AA. 2. The marketing on this does not do a great job of letting you know (or didn't when I purchased ours) that you need a smart phone to use it. And... it has to be restively new as well. For an iPhone you need something that runs IOS 9 or better. Anything older than the 4s is out. (unless there's a workaround I don't know about) All in all though it's great fun.

Tech support was great. Unfortunately the product does not work

Followed all instructions and the robot did not pair up with it's block or work as promised. Tech support was great. Unfortunately the product does not work. Read the reviews. I am not alone. Great concept. Needs some work and then re-release it.

Big Personality in a small package!
by RonnieM36 (5 out of 5 stars)

Got this little guy for my little guy for his Bday. He turned 6 and is in kindergarten.

And he absolutely loves it. You'll go thru a few processes to get Cozmo up and running. But after that, he takes on his little personality. And its really cute. You will need to download an app and interact Cozmo thru the app. So I highly recommend having an extra "smart device" to run the app on. I let my son use my phone, but every time I get a phone call, Cozmo gets disconnected and has to wait until I finish with the phone call.

To utilize the app for the "activities" to do with Cozmo, requires some reading. My 6 year old doesn't read, yet. But if your child is electronically inclined (like most kids seem these days lol) then they can more or less understand what Cozmo wants them to do by looking at the picture in the app. My son is able to determine more or less what Cozmo wants to do with the blocks.

My only negative thing I have, if I had to pick something, is that Cozmo doesn't feel durable and it's really small. So you might want to instill in your child that Cozmo is more of a "pet" and he needs to be taken care of, GENTLY. (Try picking up Cozmo and holding him upside down and you'll see what he does haha).

So yeah, I definetly recommend this. I didn't even know this guy existed until my son saw it on a YouTube video. So I recommend showing your child Cozmo in a YouTube video and see if it's something that he/she may like. More than likely, they will...
