Snatoms are a molecular modeling kit where the atoms snap together magnetically.

The idea with Snatoms is simple - to make the best hands-on chemistry kit available. Snatoms is an improvement over traditional ball and stick models for three reasons: It makes forming and breaking apart molecules a snap; the models are a better representation of what molecules actually look like, and you can feel the attraction between atoms.

This helps counter the misconception that bonds store energy - they don't. Instead, energy is released when bonds form and is required to break bonds. This is easy to demonstrate with Snatoms.

Half the size of regular Snatoms, this is the pro version, containing all the atoms of the expansion kit: 12 carbon, 12 oxygen, 26 hydrogen, 4 nitrogen, 2 sulfur, 2 phosphorus, and 4 chlorine atoms, plus 6 double bonds or 4 triple bonds.

This kit is not for kids (because the parts are small and a choking hazard).

Good for organic lecture

Use this model in 2nd semester college chemistry. A little smaller than I would have liked and my fingers have some difficulty picking pieces from holder; BUT good demonstration of size and steric hindrance. I have only used them for a few weeks, so it is still early in the evaluation period. "Ball and stick" models illustrate some things a little better and these are better in some cases. Both have advantages depending upon topic.

These are pretty great. Quick and easy to assemble and disassemble. On the Snatoms website there are pdf diagrams to aid in modeling quite a few different molecules. I do wish the magnets were a little stronger as more complicated structures become delicate when handling. Also Derek, on the off chance you read these, I'd love to see a young adult friendly app of some sort to help keep emerging chemists/physicists engaged.

Good, but could be better

Good, but could be better. There are "organic" limits indeed. You can't arrange the models to form a cyclopropane, cyclobutane or even a cyclopentane and a cyclofuranose ring. Relatively big molecules as glucose are not stiff enough to permit them to be handled and showed as a stable object. For these applications, they should have definitely stronger magnets.

These were really great for a work presentation on the nitrogen cycle and really helped to get people involved as well as assiting the embedding of learning.

The only issue was there are not enough attachment faces on a nitrogen atom to create NH4 which let them down slightly.

Thus its good to see suggestions that atoms with more attachment faces are on the way.

It would also be useful to purchase individual molecules.

Also; got charged a surprise import tax shipping from China into the UK. But that was ordering direct from the Santom's website. Not sure if same would apply via Amazon.
