Great Camera...Almost
by Justo Gabriel (3 out of 5 stars)
November 14, 2018

So, why did I leave a 3 star when I say is a great camera... Well, Because hopefully I will come back in about a month and add one star then add another by early 2019.

The camera, resolution, quality of image and video and pictures all great, it is what they say, shoot now, point later

Is a great camera to record pics and videos and "always" be in the picture

So, why docking stars...the app and the PC/MAC App...buggy, not there yet, lots of limitations and many "work around" Yes, is usable, the team updates the cam and the apps almost weekly...but again, there are many limitations that should have been ironed out prior to the release, like having to set you phone into airplane mode to connect the camera.

Is an action camera....is a 2 protruding lenses action camera...yet, here we are...no case available for it yet, site keeps saying "soon" Not even a stand or somewhat to place the camera while charging or moving files, other than a pouch that the minute there is a bit of dust in it, will scratch the lenses. Whoever approved the final design, while is a awesome design, should have added a case and stand...yet, none is available

H.265...nope, not available

You are basically forced to use the app for everything, yet, no 5K video from it and no GPS tag....unless you buy another non existent (yet) accessory...wich we still waiting for.

Battery life...ok, if you are lucky...I got 43 min max... want a spare battery...as noted before...not available yet

Durability, again...is supposed to be a "action" cam, yet...no way to protect the lenses, any simple scratch and you have a $400 paperweight...again, would be ok with a case...or better if someone will come up with lens protectors.

Make sure you have a fairly new smartphone with plenty of internal memory, as the app WILL NOT save to SD card, so basically for all of us with awesome 256 gig cards installed, they are useless as every time you same a pic of video, it goes to internal memory

iOS folks, you are in luck, you can use any mobile device... phone or tablet... Android...we are limited to mid to top end phones and tables...good luck finding one that meets the minimum requirements.

INSTA360 One X was NOT Ready For Release! - UPDATED
by A/V Buff (4 out of 5 stars)
October 27, 2018

One X - Not ready for prime time or what? Dear all and mostly Insta360, I own a Air and also purchased and returned the ONE as it has issues. Now I bought a One X and I have to ask, did you rush this to market or what?

Not only does YouTube not work on a Google Pixel XL as it reads "Network Problem" when you press CONFIRM, (Tested on 3 phones) but who thought this thing up with using a SPECIAL USB cable needed to connect to the camera that also does not allow the unit to use the phones battery? Major issue here when you want to stream live as the battery has a short life and you can not power it and stream at the same time. Are you now going to release a special cable adding yet more cost to this camera?

Why you would not have the camera connect to Wi-Fi directly and use the Internet is beyond me. But even if you did not do that, you could have at least let the user connect to the One X via Wi-Fi and then used the phones 4G LTE connection to stream. But nope that is not even an option. How do you expect people to use this when out and able to live stream with such a short cable? This could have bee so much more and I actually expected more out of such a powerful camera.

If I could live stream on YouTube, which is why I bought this camera, I would be looking to do so via 4K and not the low resolution that your other products do. YouTube allows for 4K 360, so as long as you have the bandwidth, so why would you limit to such a low resolution?

So the BIG flaws are non-working APP features. The very poor battery live and no way to power the camera and use live streaming (if I could). And the low res streaming even though this is marketed as a 5.7K device. And to think, I just got this today and I already found these issues.

To make matters worse, it does not even work with Google Street View via Wi-Fi and you also need to purchase a separate remote to be able to get GPS information even though this is already built into every smart phone! All you are doing is making ways to make more money from an already costly camera that you have crippled.

I am not sure how you got so many good reviews for this product. My only guess is that you bought the reviews or gave away free product for good reviews. But the Insta360 One X surely was not ready for release and the need to use special cables is just a slap in the face to your consumers.

UPDATE - Insta360 is a company that actually listens to feedback and responds. I gave them one new star just for the pure fact that they do respond and try to help and actually rolls out releases is great. I then added another star for as of ver 1.0.6 of the software fixed a few of my findings and then 1.0.7 fixed some more that I did not even list here but told them about. YouTube Live Streaming now works which is great. Some of the above is still true and are issues, but I am still hopeful for a new cable that allows you to power the camera as well as the phone needed for USB to pass data. (To stream you must connect via USB) As mentioned above, you are kind of stuck if you want to livestream as you are as only as good as the battery in your phone or camera. They are also looking into improving live stream resolution to be 4K capable as It is typically possible on YouTube. So I went from 2 to 4 at this time as they are listening and doing what they can. So thanks Insta360, the ONE X will end up being "the 360 camera" to buy.

Highly don't recommend.

The problem I had with this camera was that using its Insta360oneX studio, to convert videos to MP4, it would not export video with a picture, just sound. I was on chat with their tech support for a few hours. They asked questions about my computer, ect. Finally they wanted me to download a program that would allow them to have control of my computer. That is mental. No way. I have read online how others have had the same issues with no solution. The Studio is still in beta, so they obviously rushed this to market before they got the bugs out of it. I would wait a couple years to buy it, by then maybe they would get their act together.

Best Consumer 360 Cam and Sport Cam

Update (10/25/18): a video with my cat using the one X.

I pre-order on Amazon and it arrives it on 10/19/2018. First thing I want to say, the Insta 360 One X beats Gopro completely. Because it's 360, the video stabilization is amazing. I can point it what every angle I want and it will just capture everything without any issue.

In the past, I need to use multiple Gopro and spend lots of time on editing. By using the Insta 360 One X App, I did two amazing videos in the afternoon I received it. Totally a game changer. I believe I can make a lot more awesome videos for my snowboarding now.

Pro:
1. Record first, think after
2. Very stable when checking objects
3. Light Weight
4. Lost of fun ways to enjoy

Cons:
1. Battery capacity is not satisfied
2. A light press on the power button will turn on the camera, it got accidentally turned on in my bag couple times. Hope future firmware can change it to a long press.
3. Not water resistant

tiny pack with a big punch
by Cesar Martins (4 out of 5 stars)
April 26, 2019

After owning and using quite a bunch of 360º cameras I was really skeptical about the "next big thing" in the 360º realm. The last trap I fell into was believing that the Madventure was decent and boy, that was bad. This time I was wrong and the buzz was right, this is a really good product. If you want to skip all the details I'd recommend this camera and even more if you get it in a bundle and save money on it, like the ones already with the invisible stick,

Camera+card or ALL but the kitchen sink (search Amazon to find those).

I purchased the camera with my own funds, I have used it for several hours of video and multiple photos. I am a photographer and videographer and I use this device for interviews, behind the scenes videos, drone footage, hyperlapse and personal vlogs. The following is my honest impression and portrays the result of many hours of shooting and post.

OVERALL: this is a great camera for its price and purpose. Image quality is very good, the software is easy to use and free, stabilization and other advanced features are amazing.

SIZE: extra compact, the lenses and focal planes are really close and this results in great portability with superior stitching. I am still to find a fault on video and photo stitching, even with close subjects.

SOUND: the camera offers 2 microphones for stereo capture, but no audio input. I wonder if a cleverly designed audio cable could be hidden using the invisible monopod, that would be amazing for better audio quality. The sound is ok, worse than a dedicated recording device, but still usable. It would be amazing if we could pair a Bluetooth microphone... but that's just me getting greedy and trying to adequate it to my workflow, as I do interviews and

BATTERY: it is not long-lasting with 1200mAh. If I could complain about anything this would be the only concern, it does not last long. But then I looked at the size of the kit and remembered it was to be expected. There is a good solution though since the Insta360 OneX does come with a replaceable battery and that makes it easy to carry some to replace on the go. THat is actually going to be necessary if you plan on doing video or taking many pictures during long periods without recharging. My optimal solution is multiple batteries and a double charger like this one https://amzn.to/2ZoIjhw.

On my experience, I could make it last around 1 hour if using with Wi-Fi constantly on, about 4h if I kept wi-fi off and used it sparingly and without the phone connected. It charges fast, around 20-30 minutes from zero to full with a fast charger.

STABILIZATION: Whoah! I was impressed by the results from the 6-axis gyro-based image stabilization, especially comparing with the lame MadVenture and other bad examples I've had in the past. I recorded smooth videos while walking on very bad terrain. As I moved and inevitably shook it quite good the videos still came buttery smooth. I am impressed and very happy with the results so far, I do think it is just as good as the amazing stabilization from the GoPro7 https://amzn.to/2XvNFFV.

STITCHING: As I stated before, I have only found minor issues with the automatic stitching. It is very easy to stitch using the phone app, but I do prefer to put the card in a fast card reader and copy to my workstation, this way I have more options and control over the videos. I do not use the app to edit, but it is really simple and intuitive to use and make overcapture videos.

EDITING: overcapture videos are very easy with the free app. You can also use most non-linear editing software (Final Cut, Premiere...) to edit natively and that is a game changer for me. No more need to stitch using my phone and then transfer to a messy After Effects workflow!

ENVIRONMENTAL SEAL: it is not waterproof, you need a special case to protect it or even dive. That said and on your own risk, it is possible to use it in "splashy situations" without an issue. I've recorded videos near a waterfall without issues, I just tried to protect the open USB port and all was good. I take no responsibility if drown your camera, do it at your own risk.

DESIGN: I found it to be great, functional and even pretty. Materials look and feel good, it is as premium as it should be expected with the price tag. The tiny LCD is a welcome bonus, you can actually get relevant data from it. The simple 2-button interface gets the simple tricks done, for anything fancier you should use the app. LEDs keep you aware of what is happening and most important: if it is still recording!

The only issue I found with the design is that you cannot replace the microSD card without removing the camera from a tripod. That is not an issue for most people, only for those capturing many hours of interviews and needing to keep the camera without any movement. The easy solution was buying bigger cards, up to 128Gb.

Size is 115 x 48 x 28 mm and it weighs 115g.

IMAGE QUALITY: the lenses are quite fast (f2.0) and capture good light. Photo resolution is OK for consumer use with 18Mp and DNG capture, video resolution is nice at 5.7k. I write "nice" even though it is probably the best resolution on a consumer/prosumer camera to date because gorgeous 360º video requires 8k and more, but that would add bulk and a couple of thousand dollars to the equation. Higher frame rates would also be nice, making 5.7k slow motion even more amazing than it already is. Again, 5.7k at 30 fps and 100mbps is not shabby, it is just grumpy-old-me remembering the results from the Pro cameras I've tested and used. Very low light situations are a challenge for small sensors and this is no exception, image is not great under very low light. Even though ISO goes to a high 6400 I'd keep it as low as possible, never raising it over 400.

CONTROLS:

You can (and should) set sort-of-manual controls for ISO and shutter speed.

If you want the best quality possible you should use the LOG mode and edit later to achieve the most from the footage and achieve the best result. HDR video is gorgeous and makes it simpler but you lose some control over the process, as it is all done automatically by the software.

CONNECTIVITY: stupid-proof connection to any "moderately smart"phone, just connect to the Wi-Fi and open the app. The app is free and you can easily find it on the app store of your preference (Windows, Apple or Android). Downloading images is super-fast, videos can last a while but they are HUGE and that is to be expected. Consider connecting with the supplied cable to speed up the process and save battery.
5G WiFi, Bluetooth LE 4.0, MFI-certified lightning connector

SOFTWARE: App and desktop version (Insta 360 Studio) are easy to use and intuitive, they do require some time to process long videos. Keep in mind we are talking Gigabytes of data; all that quality needs a big room to fit in. All versions are free to download on insta360's website or your preferred app store.

FANCY STUFF AND FEATURES:
- data Overlay: you can embed speed, elevation, incline angle, heading, coordinates... to your footage.
- Freecapture and overcapture: film in 360 and present it as a regular video. You can change the view angle as if multiple cameras filmed the scene.
- Picture in picture: you can capture a video as a smartphone does, with the image in front and a tiny box with your image as the action unfolded before you
- Hyperlapse, timeshift, slow motion
- Live streaming to Facebook and Youtube (I have not tested any other options, if they exist). You can even change the view live and make it a tiny planet or other viewing alternatives you fancy.
- built-in GPS: data is stored in each capture
- Loops: great IF you like the silly and annoying boomerang style
- Wireless VR Viewing

MY PREFERRED ACCESSORIES:
- The included pouch is a must have and must use item. It protects the protruding and exposed lenses from getting scratched, not from bumps and hits. If you drop the camera in it damage is still possible.
- extra batteries: mandatory if you plan to record multi-minute videos or capture many photos over long periods of time without recharging.
- The invisible stick is great, easy to open and close, disappears from the images as magic. You can achieve an amazing "flying camera effect" using it. I would recommend that you purchase it as the second accessory.

It is OK

Insta360 one x has below issues.
1. Video quality is not clear, and the color saturation is poor. This is definitely a few levels below the latest market expectation.
2. Selfie stick cannot be invisible. This occurs even after the angle of the camera and the stick are aligned, and making sure that the base of the camera is small enough in its are.
3. Insta360 one x has this infamous red flare. However, what I was not expecting is the frequency of them. They appears in the video too often - very annoying.
4. The difference of the brightness and the color is too noticeable on stitch line. This can be mitigated by chancing the camera angle. However, if I do so, my selfie stick cannot support the camera wait, and Insta360 tilts down.
5. Battery life is short - about 40 min?

So-so picture quality.

I was so excited to receive this camera that I could hardly wait. Well, things aren't always what they seem....

The insta360 One X video/picture quality on the insta360.com website was phenomenal. In real life... Not so much. The stitching line is very visible when ever there is any movement. Since this is video that's usually the case! The focus is constantly changing and is especially bad around the perimeter of the field of view which is one reason why the stitching looks so bad. So far I am thoroughly unimpressed. Either my camera is bad or the sample videos up on the website were made using a totally different camera system. I'm very interested in hearing what others have to say.

One more note. The LCD display is totally useless outside in daylight making it very difficult to operate without guessing.

Don't count on tech support for setup help ...
by Amazon Stockholder (1 out of 5 stars)

I've had the camera for a few months and have yet to take a single photo or video. It looks nice; feels nice; promos make it look like an exciting product. But I may never find out if they're accurate portrayals of this product or not.

I'm not new to electronic video technology; this is likely about my 15th video camera .... beginning in 1978 with a Panasonic 2-piece video camera and portable VHS recorder. The technology has come a long way.

This camera came directly from Amazon, at full list price; I've put in about 20 hours of time trying to set it up and anticipating all the ways I could use it. After all that time, which included several emails to Insta360 tech support, it's still not connecting to WiFi, bluetooth, my iPhone, or my computer.. I've followed all of the (meager) instructions that come with the camera, pllus their help section, but nothing advances me along.

Yes, it may be defective, but how woud I know? It would be nice if there was an actual person in tech support to talk with: they might clear up the mystery in five minutes. But since there's only an email address that hasn't yet responded, I have no choice but to return this lovely little piece of technology to Amazon for a refund.

Someone suggested asking other users, for example on Facebook forums, but I don't have a FB account any longer and won't go down that road agaain. I've watched many youtube videos about this product but most of that sort of help assumes you've got a working camera.

Good luck to those prospective customers who are willing to take a chance on an unsupported piece of tech like this.

360 live is a no show. :(
by Duke Demchuk (1 out of 5 stars)
January 13, 2019

This cam has so many issues, it's flimsy and cheap. Meaning once I had it out I dropped it on my carpet (with padding) and found that it started pulling apart, I was able to snap it back in. The picture is horrible and I say this because I own a RYLO that blows this out of the water. I really wanted to like this product, since it is supposed to do 360 live. Well last night at Disney I connected it to my phone and went "live" but the whole show was NOT recorded even when the system said I was live on Facebook. None of what I was "live" for was posted. Literally pissed, thank God i had my RYLO recording. No happy with the cam, sending it back. Only thing I wanted it for was the 360 live feature. The picture quality is ok and offers goes to a fisheye view (I know I can correct this, but shouldn't have to do this all the time). I have taken this to a few spots, seems to post all pics to insta website for others to see, the you have to repost from your camerA to any social media.

Great video quality camera and great customer service.
by William Toepke (5 out of 5 stars)
February 14, 2019

I believe the One x of the best 360 camera's on the market in it's price range. And while I don't have first hand knowledge of all of the camera's on the market. Video quality is very good and editing with the app is extremely easy. The only improvement I can think of is maybe better sound recording if that is important to you.

Customer service I couldn't be happier with. As you can see in the pictures, I broke my camera. I sent my camera in to be fixed and they sent me a new camera as well as another Invisible selfie stick. If you read the warrantee details, that was going way above and beyond their guidelines to make their customers happy, so Lucy if you are reading this, thank you very much!!
