A giant step forward in icing!
by jimf909 (5 out of 5 stars)
April 15, 2018

I had my first knee surgery over 30 years ago and have been icing my knee weekly or daily as needed over the decades. Three weeks ago I had a total knee replacement and decided to get this product to support recovery. Very simply, this is a game-changer when it comes to icing. Set the machine up with a fresh batch of ice cubes and frozen water bottles and icing becomes easy for the next 6-8 hours. The convenience of being able to easily don and doff the pad means that iced my knee more frequently which is good for recovery. It also means that it's easier to remove the ice pad if I need to get up to attend to activities away from my recline & elevate sofa position, e.g. answer the front door to sign for my Amazon Fresh delivery :) .

The product is well made and does what it's supposed to do: add water, a few bottles of frozen water and a few scoops of ice cubes, plug in the machine, wrap the pad around the body part that needs treatment, turn the machine on and enjoy pain relief and the therapeutic benefits of icing.

Is the product pertfect? Of course not. I've attached photos of a few modifications I made to improve performance for my needs.
- First, I attached the machine to a wheeled cart that I had handy by drilling holes in the handle and using a bungee cord to secure he machine to the cart. This allowed me to roll the machine to the kitchen to refresh the ice. I was even able to use the rolling cart as my second crutch while I crutched to the kitchen for the ice refresh.
- Second the lid closes very securely! So securely that the latch is so stiff that it becomes a struggle to open the lid. The product also doesn't have a reasonable grip or handle to open the lid. To address this I first trimmed the protrusion on the lid that secures the lid to the body of the machine. This made it easier to open. Next, I used a bit of medical tape to provide something to grip while opening the lid. These modifications combined with the machine being attached to the rolling cart made it easier to open the lid to refresh the ice.
- Third, I added the CPAP hose cover (tubing wrap, 6 ft.) as recommended by others in these reviews. It may have helped to preserve cold and reduce condensation but but it was probably the least helpful of these mods,

With so many things to attend to after a knee replacement, this product simplifies an important part of the recovery process. It's hard to express how much I valued this. Additionally, icing is better compared to using the freezer full of alternative ice packs that I've accumulated over the past ears. Highly recommended!

WARNING: If you purchase this product through Amazon the company WILL NOT honor the 6 month warrantee. We purchased this product and it worked great for 1 month. Then it stopped pumping water. We contacted their customer service and was told that "If the unit was purchased on Amazon, unfortunately Amazon is not an authorized dealer of our products and we would not honor the warranty." by their lead customer service representative. Failed in 30 days. Manufacture won't stand behind product based upon who sold it, not quality of product. You are rolling the dice with this one.

No ice needed! Use frozen bottles.

Awesome ice machine! Use frozen water bottles filled 1.5 inch below cap to allow for ice expsnsion and to the machine add just the little amount of water to reach the line indicated on the inside wall. No ice needed! Save time and money. You will need three bottles in the machine so freeze 9 total so you can always have a cold set ready. One set will last 4-6 hours inside the machine.
Great machine for my wife's total knee replacement. My wife says every patient with a knee replacement should get one. Besides the water bottles I use a big insulated zippered cloth food transporter to hold the main unit. Keeps the bottles frozen longer and protects the machine and also the bag handles makes it a nice traveling bag to carry the entire machine if the patient needs it at their desk at work. Also at home get a hospital bedside cart on wheels if possible or a small piece of furniture that height to give the tubes the proper angle down to the patient.

This device is wonderful!!!! Buy it before you have surgery!
by Anna Pete (5 out of 5 stars)

I bought this Ossur Cold Rush Cold therapy System ahead of my shoulder surgery on October 6. It was a life saver. I have had two shoulder surgeries in the past and just had regular ice packs post op. The regular ice packs really never lasted very long. This system was fabulous. I used it almost continuously for the first three weeks after surgery and it really helped relieve the pain and swelling. I was able to use far less pain medication than I would usually have needed after the surgery.

Right after the surgery my shoulder was very hot and inflamed which called for more changing of the ice. At first I needed to change the ice every four hours. But as I healed, my shoulder cooled and it would keep my shoulder cold for as long as six hours.

As far as the ice goes, the ice maker in my freezer just couldn't keep up with the demand. I sent out for ice from the grocery store, but that was crushed ice and it melted too quickly. I tried freezing water in a bottle and someone else suggested. But what really worked best was finding square Tupperware to freeze large water block. They ice blocks that last a long time and melt very slowly. With my homemade ice blocks I only had to change the ice every six hours.

I have had no problem with this unit at all. And now after almost three months of daily use the only thing that has worn out is the cover on the pad. It has a Velcro strap to hold it on and that has become a little frayed. But for the number of times I have pulled that Velcro off I am amazed it lasted that long. However, even though the cover is a little frayed it still works great.

It give this Cold Therapy System and thumbs up.

Love love love device - worked in orthopedic nursing for ...
by Texan native (5 out of 5 stars)

Love love love device - worked in orthopedic nursing for years and am retired - had worked with the igloo ice cooler type devices, but this machine is beyond awesome, be aware it is a medical device and if not purchased thru a doctor that warranty etc is not available, also this is considered a one time injury or surgery type device, so if looking at and thinking years and years of use, it isn't considered for that. But if you add up cost of ice or ice packs and convenience it is worth it, also add water and use those plastic freeze packs in it or freeze small plastic bottles to save money and makes device easier to carry and empty etc, the cord attachment to machine doesn't disconnect, the pad does disconnect from cord, also cord has condensation when running, but not to much, just use a towel under or around cord - make sure if not using, to empty and keep cooler inside dry, would place cord neatly rolled and closed as good as possible inside a extra extra large ziplock bag so it doesn't become dry and brittle - when u have given cooler enough time with lid open to dry out (remember cord is attached to cooler, so let air dry thru hole inside) keep lid closed so continuous air while storing doesn't dry inside of cord out, when I first started it I set to setting as instructions said and then at lowest and it cooled great for hours and hours - as instructions say do not apply to bare skin and I can say it is so cold u don't want to, so u will need a ace wrap or etc to be against skin - even with jeans on and pad over jeans kept area cold - I give item a five star plus and I ordered with Amazon verified and am completely satisfied - also please please read description about which pad is included because pic isn't always the exact pad you will be purchasing!

BEWARE THIS PRODUCT LEAKS AFTER FURST FEW MONTHS OF USAGE
by Surya Padmanabhan (1 out of 5 stars)

I got this for my shoulder surgery and it worked just fine. After couple of months of usage I put it aside. Now I had ankle surgery and got the ankle attachment. This machine leaks now. You expect this product to last for multiple years given the price paid. Very disappointed.

Update: 07/13/18 6PM EST: Seller contacted me and asked for photos of leakage. Once I sent, they responded right away and informed me that they are sending replacement unit. I will provide more update once I receive the product.

Soothing relief for Knee replacement!
by SpeedeeGonzalez (5 out of 5 stars)
February 14, 2016

Bought in advance of my total knee replacement..it has been a wonderful source of pain relief both before and after surgery. It helps reduce pain and swelling considerably. In order to increase performance, use small frozen bottles of water with the labels cleanly removed, that way you don't have to carry. the unit to the sink to drain melted ice. Just add 48oz of water or so and toss in 4 or 5 frizen bottles. Start with 12 to 15 in the freezer and cycle out. Also..covering the hose with a Respironics CPAP hose cover improves the comfort tremendously, it keeps the cold hose off of you.

For best performance, the unit should be at or just above the level of your knee on a table, coil the extra hose in your lap or on the table.

In my opinion, this should be required for TKR, sad that insurance won't cover. It was the best money spent for my surgery.

Works much better than ice packs
by 12voltstuff (5 out of 5 stars)

Just had total knee replacement surgery. They sent me home with ice packs . But I specs are hard and don't conform to your knee even though they're made of gel..

This really beats ice packs. The pads conformed nicely around my knee. And the temperature control is great really no need to put a towel between prepared in your skin. But a thin paper towel over the wound is good for antiseptic technique.

The key though is to use reusable ice packs in the bucket not ice. The plastic block kind 6 x 6 x 1:worked great . But even the flexible Packs work fine just Add Water for the circulation to work. I used four packs and rotated two at a time. You add a little water for the circulation to work. Each change of ice gave me 6 hours of cooling. Otherwise you have major hassle filling up with ice cubes and emptying the water from the Melt
. Still Loving it after 6 weeks. Great for pain and swelling

Well-made and quiet. The little hum I can live with and I'm picky.

It's worth every penny

I had an ACL reconstruction surgery 2days ago and this machine has been helping my out quite a bit. The doctor recommended me to get it so I got it and never looked back. It will go through ice like nothing so you have to be aware of the fact that someone has to go and buy ice from corner stores because your freezer probably will not be able to keep up with the amount of ice the machine needs to be topped off because it can hold a lot of ice inside.

It works like a champ keeping the pad nice and icy cold all the time. It's so quiet that I don't even know if it's on or not.

The lid is very hard to open but it will surely keep it tight and spill free.

I highly recommend this. This is money well spent. It really is that good

This is an excellent product with a few issues
by TRE (5 out of 5 stars)

This is an excellent product with a few issues. It allows cold to be applied to an injury or surgical site far better than cold packs or other methods tried. It is quiet and easy to use but it can take 2 people to strap on in many cases. It can be carried to the bathroom without removing it but with a full load of ice or frozen bottles, it is a bit heavy. We used old socks around the supplied velcro straps to make them more comfortable under the arm in a shoulder surgery application. Iwould be nice if the hose could be detached without any water mess. We used frozen water bottles and kept a set in the freezer and rotated them about every 3-4 hours.

It occasionally shuts down but the problem appears to be the pump needing priming and an air lock. If it stops pumping, raise the unit to a high place with the pad much lower and that seems to break the priming problem. You may have to work to get the air through the hoses and pad while trying to prime the pump. It seems to help if the unit is placed above the pad so gravity helps the pump prime.

Other than the priming/air lock problem and clumsiness of putting it on, taking it off and hauling it to the bathroom, its the best approach to the continuous cold on and injury problem at a reasonable price. I would recommend it with the caveats described above which are easy to work around.
