Pretty Good Harness
by Dro8 (4 out of 5 stars)
January 5, 2014

I've read a lot of bad reviews on this harness, but think it's actually pretty nice. I ordered mine from Amazon and I got it within days. The construction of this harness is just like that of any other Kurgo harness - the quality is good. The only real difference is the addition of the metal plates on the front and back for the camera mount.

A lot of people complain that it doesn't come with GoPro mounts, but I guess they don't realize that there are other companies that make action cameras out there and someone might want to mount a Contour or a Sony Action Cam etc. The product doesn't specify that it's made for use with GoPro so I'm not sure why people think it'll come with GoPro mounts. Just make sure that whatever camera you use, you have extra mounts for it. I happen to have a GoPro, so I purchased some mounts for that and they worked fine on my harness. For the back mount area, I used a flat GoPro mount. I actually did see a bit of light coming through the middle of the stick-on area, when viewed from the side, so I just grabbed crescent wrench, clamped down hard on it, and it stuck on pretty well. Immediately after doing so I took my dogs out into the snow for some play time with the GoPro mounted on it's back. With my dog running around like a maniac for about 15 minutes, the back mount never came off, so it seems to have stuck on there pretty well. I used a curved GoPro mount for the front mounting point. That was a perfect contour and it stuck on like a charm. I have not affixed or tested the camera on the front mount yet.

Regarding the view from the camera, a lot of people say its very shaky. To that I say, "Ya think?" If you mount a camera on a dog over it's shoulders which it uses to walk/run with - of course it's going to be shaky. It's not going to look like a steady-cam shot. If you understand that, then you'll have no problem with this. I've read other reviews that say the front mount is a lot more steady, but I have yet to try that as my wife insists she wants to see Minnie's ears flopping around while she plays. The bottom line here is that if you're looking for cinema-quality steady shots, you're not going to get them - it's a camera attached to a dog. I've attached a low quality video of the snow playtime I mentioned earlier. Of course it looks much better in HD, but this will give you an idea of what you can capture from the back mounting point.

All that said, I think this harness is not bad at all. It's not "absolutely amazing" or anything like that, but as long as you understand it's limitations, you shouldn't have any problems with it. Just make sure you get an appropriate size to get it adjusted pretty snugly on your pooch, and enjoy.

GoPro on a Dog.
by Unregistered,Top Contributor: Photography (4 out of 5 stars)

Works pretty good for a GoPro mount. Some people seem to be mislead, assuming the cameras mounted directly to this harness. The harness has two large metal plates to which you first need to attache your camera's mounts. In the case of the GoPro, it's the adhesive backed mounting brackets. There are two type, one flat, the other has a slight curve to it. In this case, the flat one went on the breat plate and the curved one went on top.

I found I had to modify the front straps (that's the ones that go around the animals neck) so I could get it sufficiently tight. This has more to do with sizing then the product, my dog (Walker Coon) has a broad chest but skinny neck.

Once I got it sufficiently tight everything worked well. I liked the fact the harness included a ring for hooking ones leash to, this allowed me to remove the normal collar.

Works for a chest mounted camera--not for a back mounted camera
by J. Seelye (2 out of 5 stars)

I'm an amateur at putting cameras on dogs. I have a GearPro camera because I can't afford a GoPro. I had my camera mounted on a padded hemp harness using a couple of nylon ties. It was mounted above the dogs head on the back of the harness. It worked OK except when the waterproof housing was on, the camera would slide off center. I read about the various camera mount harnesses and decided this one was most versatile and got the best reviews. I have a large Brittany with a 32 inch chest, so I got the large. The first thing I had to do was modify the neck strap adjustments--following the instructions on a sheet of paper that came with the harness. I mounted my camera on the back plate using some extreme Velcro type material--all was good. We went out the door and the dog shook to adjust the harness and the camera slid to the side more than it did with my home-made set up. I adjusted the tightness of the harness until it was almost hurting the dog. Still the camera immediately slid to one side of the other. I gave up on the back mount and tried the chest mount. Because the camera is below the dogs head and the chest plate is more secure, the camera stayed in position better than it did on the dogs back. I'm not sure I like the video I get from under the dogs chin as compared with on her back. I will have to adjust the camera angle a bit to see what happens. I like the back mount better as I can see the top of the dogs head as she looks around--makes a more obvious dog's eye view video. This much more expensive harness didn't improve my back mounted videos at all--probably worse than my home-made set up. I'm 30 dollars poorer and a bit wiser--I would not buy this harness again. Another issue with this harness involves the aluminum plate on the chest. The top edge is sharp enough that if the dog was pulling on a leash, I would be concerned about doing damage to their throat. If I planned to use this harness much, I would put some padding across the top of the chest plate to protect the dogs neck.

Wasn't a good fit for us.

My dog has worn several harnesses over his lifetime, so we're pretty familiar with working harnesses for outdoor activities.

Putting this harness on is not as difficult as some people have mentioned, it's about the same if you've worked with different harnesses before.

The "trick" is the metal mount on the top of the harness. Positioning this in a way that does not hurt your dog, and still allows the camera (if needed) to be mounted is a bit cumbersome.

I REALLY tried to like this harness, but the top metal bracket mount is too large, even for a Medium/Large dog. For my dog's shape, the metal mount on the top kept hitting him in uncomfortable places everytime he worked up a speed/his natural gait.

The front mount rode too high, so the camera view was a whole bunch of Bender's chin and head bobbing down to avoid obstacles. or whenever he was interested in something.

I wondered if it was the fit of the harness, so we sized down and that one had the same issues. There was no change in the size of the metal top mount and that was my primary concern.

Update !! Crr

Seems well made, its a medium size, but don't expect it to fit a dog that is any more than medium. In fact it's more for a smaller size dig.

Anyway as this was too small I decided to purchase the gopro harness, and I LOVE IT

It's well made and it does stay in place despite what some people are saying, I put it on my dog and played fetch, which means a lot of running and turning and not once did it slip, the only thing I had to do was tighten the camera clamp which has nothing to do with the harness.

And of course there's some camera shake when the dog runs but again that's physics and not the fault of the harness.

So long story short, the gopro harness is the one to go with.

P.S I purchased the harness through gopro as they were in stock.

Nice harness just not really for Large dogs...
by Gina Central,Top Contributor: Coloring (4 out of 5 stars)

The harness its self is well made and i like it. I went in knowing it did not actually have a mount but a place for it to go which I have many so it wasnt a big deal for me. I will say this it does NOT fit my dog. I have a Boxer who has a larger than normal chest cavity so I knew it might would be a little snug. He weighs about 85lbs and he is a little chunky. But because his chest is soo large there was no way this thing was gonna fit on him. It was at least a good 3 inches off. I can still use it because I do rescue. But It would have been nice if it came with good sizing information. I feel like that is lacking. Any dogs over 70lb will probably not fit into this unless they are naturally slim in the chest area.

Good, but a design flaw
by Drew (4 out of 5 stars)

This is a really fun product for people who want to get ridiculous videos of their dog with whatever action camera they use. Like another reviewer said, the standard flat and curved GoPro sticky mounts worked perfectly to mount my camera to the very sturdy metal chest and back plates. The first couple videos I've taken are a lot of fun to watch, and I'm looking forward to getting more once it warms up and my dog can get in the water.

There is one design flaw that may make it tough for some dogs to wear this. The clips that secure it are on the back straps of the harness around your dog's belly, not neck. This means your dog has to put his head through the circle of nylon to get it on. Some dogs have trouble with this and just won't do it. I can work my dog through it, but even when he gets it on, his head is larger than the area of his neck where the harness rests when it's secured. This means that every time I put it on or take it off, I have to resize the harness to get it tight enough so the camera isn't slipping to one side or the other. Not a deal-breaker, but it's an inconvenience that could have been prevented with two more clips. Then, you could size it once and clip it on every time.

Still, really fun product that works well once it's on.

The front of the vest sits a little strange & it would be nicer if it had a little curve at the ends
by cosplaygrimlyn (5 out of 5 stars)

I have no idea why people are bothered about the wobble... Your dog is walking, it will wobble. I had no issues mounting my own camera mounts to this harness. The front of the vest sits a little strange & it would be nicer if it had a little curve at the ends like the back plate does. But I found a sizing chart on another website & ordered it here. It fits nice & snug. & I love that it has a leash loop so I don't have to try to fit him into 2 harnesses to leash him while wearing this as the go pro harness states it is not for walks.

Doesn't fit well...hoping for a better future
by oldmusiclover (2 out of 5 stars)
February 14, 2014

Even though I got the recommended size it still doesn't really stay snug. The camera bounces around - I understand the dog is moving alot - but the camera tends to be too heavy on the top mount and slides over to the side. I'd cinch the harness tighter but I don't think that would be fair to the dog. Basically what you have to do is use the sticker mount for the GoPro to mount it on the metal plates on the top or underside but so far no good. I'll play around with it more in the future but right now, it's not very usable.

Note: I haven't had a chance to use the lower mount yet.

Awesome! Very well built and a lot of fun to use.

This camera harness is great! It's really fun to see everything from my dog's perspective. I've been posting videos to my Facebook page and my friends like them a lot. It is very well built. There are plates for mounting the camera on top of the dog and on his chest. The plates are made from ALUMINUM, not some cheap plastic as I have seen with other products.
