H13, SCOTTeVEST, XY37 "travel hoodies"? I've tried em all now.
by Gordie Lachance (4 out of 5 stars)
June 9, 2016

Ok so I am a hoody-hoarder. I love hoodies and would wear one 24-7 if I could. I own A LOT. But I didn't have any kind of these "travel hoodies", so I decided to venture out and find one. I have now purchased on Amazon this AyeGear H13, the SCOTTeVEST microfleece hoody, and the XY37 travel hoody. (Gotta love Amazon Prime and free returns to try out things).

This H13 hoody is so close to being GREAT. It's GOOD, and I like it, but it has a ways to go before achieving true greatness. Also understand that anybody's opinions on these is subjective, including mine. Everyone has different things they like/loathe. But anyway, here's my hoodpinion.

Style-wise/appearance, this H13 is by far the best of the three in my opinion. It has kind of an "urban" look - I live in a major city so I care about that I guess. I suppose it could also be described as "alternative-ish" or whatever you want to say. It has a "weighted" feel, which I really like. Not "heavy" by any means, but feels durable, kinda like a Carhartt feel or American Giant. It's definitely not feather-light. The main zipper like people have said is on the left side which I think is a cultural thing? In the US, male apparel has zippers on the right. I thought it'd be a big deal but honestly it's not. Doesn't bother me at all. However the vertical chest pocket is on the right breast, which IS a bit annoying unless you're left-handed. I love the pocket itself and the zipper, but having to reach in with my non-dominant hand is a bit cumbersome. First world problems, I know. If it were on the right it'd be great. Same goes for the touchscreen phone/iPod pocket inside. It's on the right so again reaching in with your left hand to access it. Also the touchscreen pocket itself is a bit small. I have an iPhone 6 with a thin case on it, and it gets cut off a bit at the top (top of the phone sticks out a bit). I can manage but if you have a Galaxy Note or iPhone 6+ etc, you will probably hate it. iPhone 5 and the like, you're fine.

There is a nice sized zippered vertical pocket on the left inside chest. And for the record, I actually LOVE the zippers on this hoody across the board. Some may not depending on preference, but they're rugged and bigger and just feel sturdy. I'm an active dude so I want that. The iPad pocket has a velcro enclosure - doesn't bother me but some hate velcro. I don't put my iPad in there anyway - I use it to store extra gloves or snacks for the plane etc. Speaking of gloves, no cuff-gloves (thumbholes) in the cuffs of this H13. Not a dealbreaker for me but some may want that. The two front handwarmer pockets at stomach level are pretty standard and deep enough, with snap closures. There's also another vertical zippered pocket on the lower right side which is kinda cool.

There's a small pocket on both upper sleeves (outside bicep). They're smallish but good for a pack of gum or for me I have a slim-style wallet and I can fit it in there. Pen pocket inside holds a pen just fine. There's two "credit card" (or license or whatever) pockets on the inner left inside, but they're kinda flimsy and you have to really jam a card in there and it's more of a hassle than it's worth. Also I would be afraid of them falling out if you're being at all active. There are some stitching issues in general on the inside but honestly there are on every travel hoody I've tried (XY37 had the best stitching). The hood is pretty standard and comfortable. It fits pretty far over the front of the head which is nice but isn't by any means equivalent to having a "sleep mask" that some others have, if that's crucial to you.

Now where I really feel like H13 dropped the ball is having no earbud holders. That is SO important to me and one of the main things I'm attracted to in the travel hoodies out there. I don't *need* a sleep mask, annoying neck pillow, or even thumbholes on the cuff, but keeping my earbuds out of my way while on the go or on the plane is a huge perk that this hoody is lacking. That IS almost a dealbreaker. Almost. But seriously AyeGear, get on that as of yesterday!

Of the three I tried, I like this H13 the best for style, fit, and feel (for the most part - see what I have to say about SCOTTeVEST material below though). If it had earbud holders and switched a couple pockets to opposite sides it would be the winner for me for sure. Now it may help you to know that the XY37 has the most functional pockets, hands down. The placement is better and so is the sewing. BUT it has much smaller zippers probably to maintain a "sleekness" but for me I like the heftier zippers on this H13. But the XY37's layout is better thought out for the most part. However the XY37 is pretty plain looking, ran a bit smaller (which if you're going to have stuff in a bunch of pockets you want at least a LITTLE wiggle-room). This H13 is just a tad loose on me but I actually like that for this kind of travel hoody. By the way I am 6' 180lbs and wear a Large if that helps anybody. I bought Larges across the board in these hoodies. The only advantage I would give the SCOTTeVEST microfleece hoody is that the microfleece is actually SUPER soft and I can't deny it feels like you're snuggling with a teddy bear in a marshmallow patch. Haha. But, ironically, the pockets were a hot mess. They're all divided inside, apparently so that one pocket can (supposedly) serve multiple functions, but I just found them to be annoying as hell and adding to my organizational confusion rather than helping it. It's also pretty plain looking, kinda like a standard North Face fleece or something. Also no touchscreen pocket inside which seems like a major oversight (though some of their other jackets etc do have one). But yeah, that microfleece feels GOOD. (Not sure how long it'd hold up for after multiple machine washes and wear though). It is also $10 cheaper than both this H13 and the XY37, but if the pockets don't work all that great then why not just buy ANY other hoody because for that price you could get some killer brand-name "non-travel" hoodies.

So, in the end, I returned the SCOTTeVEST microfleece hoody because the whole ultimate point is travel function. And though I intended on only keeping ONE hoody at the end of this ordeal, I am actually keeping both this H13 and the XY37. If they could merge to be the greatest hoody on the planet, I'd be happy, but alas... I keep the H13 because I know I'll wear it more often as I like the looks and the pockets it does have will function great in my everyday life. I'm keeping the XY37 because while it isn't the most stylish thing in the world, for getting through airport security and sitting on the plane itself or a train ride or long road-trip where I'm not driving or wherever things like the sleep mask, earbud holders, cuff-warmers, etc will be good to have. There's definitely pros and cons to both hoodies. Is either one worth their $99 pricetag? Certainly a debatable question. But I've never paid below $50 for a truly great hoody. I do have standard cheap-on-the-wallet Russells, Hanes, etc, but anybody that says those are the same as certain other $50-and-above hoodies is just making themselves feel justified for not spending more money. Haha. (True though). The H13 and XY37 both have enough "travel" bells and whistles in addition to being pretty dang comfortable that standard hoodies don't have to warrant them being a bit more expensive. Now I can't definitively say whether $100 is too steep or not, but I pulled the tags off and am keeping both of em, so... there ya go.

It has some strong pros but also some strong cons
by D. E. Camp (3 out of 5 stars)

I'm really mixed about this item. I got an XX-LARGE in size even though I normally take a X-LARGE , the hoodie is still tight. I'm a senior and grew up and survived wearing looser, less form fitting clothing. I do however, still travel and air travel these days is not easy for anyone. Especially for us older folks who might have a little difficulty re-assembling stuff that was undone to get through security.

After trying the hoodie on I thought " How wonderful". I can now keep my passport, ticket, license and other travel documents in one pocket, take it out, show it and put it back. IN THE SAME PLACE. The hoodie is like a giant wallet. I really appreciate it since on one trip a kind stranger handed me my drivers license with the comment, "Sir, you dropped your license.". This hoodie pocket will prevent that from happening. I also have space for my Iphone and Ipad so they no longer need to be place in the separate basket. I envision just placing the hoodie in the basket and retrieving everything with the hoodie. I always worry about that since it's so ease for someone else to grab it out of that basket.

I also imagine that it will be very good on the super air conditioned planes. The hood is large enough to actually encourage a comfortable sleep on long trips. I wish I'd had it on those long flight overseas as those little airline blankets don't quite do the job. I will also be able to listen to music or on my phone or pad without these item being on the little tray. No more juggling for a space to set something. The other pockets will probably be nice but I don't know for what yet. So it's warm and practical.

I also anticipate that it will be nice for my next autumn trip to Europe. I will be nice to wear the warm hoodie on those cool evenings and sometime, cool days. BUT, now the con's. It's warm but it might be too, too warm for my summer trips. I don't want a vest since it looks too contrived and amateur photo looking. I'm a retired pro photographer and never did like to look like I was on a grand photo job. It felt fake. The vest looks fake to me while the hoodie is something that I would wear. I kind of wish that I'd looked at the jackets a bit more. I also wish that I'd investigated the Scottie-vest a bit more. It seems to do the same thing but it has methods for temperature control. Scottie-Vest also seem to be the original inventor of the travel hoodie and rumor has it that AyeGear borrowed the design without permission. Check Youtube for the story.

I will use this item for my European trip but I don't know if it will really work for my summer trip to St. Louis. It really gets hot there. I did check what would happen if I slung it over my shoulder and carried it that way. It work but then items are visible. Perhaps I'll save up some money and get a Scottie-vest and have something for travel in warm and cool travel times.

I RETURNED THE ITEM: I decided to check the ScottieVest and discovered that it's made much better and the size is the correct size. All pockets have zippers and the construction is much better. It's also much, much more functional for various climates. It's not just warm but can be adapted for warmer climates. Best of all, the pockets are secure.

Good idea, poorly made product -
by J. A. (1 out of 5 stars)
February 14, 2015

I thought this would be awesome for flying, I am now traveling a lot, so I spent the money...

What I got was poorly made; mediocre at best - very disappointing.
- Metal zippers, bad idea. Heavy and clunky to use, not at all smooth. This was really a deal breaker for me.
- Interior Pockets, flimsy for holding credit cards, the liners are crumpled cotton and the plastic phone holder is for 5" screen max. Big pocket was too big, my tablet just sort got lost in there (maybe not an issue with an iPad)
- Fabric, was too thick, very heavy and the color (maroon) was kind of bright
- Fit, was too long (and I'm tall) and just didn't fit well on me
- Hood, too short to pull over your eyes
- Price, it feels cheap, not worth $100!

Returned it (one of the great advantages of Amazon.com) and thanks for the reviewer that mentioned SCOTTeVest, I ended buying their micro-fleece hoodie and I am very satisfied with it - well made and it was less expensive

I would not recommend this AyeGear hoodie at all.

Buy this hoody and take it to the tailor for custom pockets!
by ChevMDGuys (1 out of 5 stars)
September 9, 2014

Great Hoody. However it came with a pocket that was not sewn. I chatted with AYE and they told me this is a custom pocket and to take it to a tailor. I cannot believe they would tell someone this! There is only one way to sew that pocket! Their videos, and images all show it as a handy glasses pocket, not a custom to take to your tailor after spending $100 on a new hoody.

The Velcro closure had holes around it in the fabric and the stitching was loose around hand pocket. I did order up to large with all the comments of running small, and yes I was glad I did... large seemed perfect. But the company does not have very high customer service standards, and their quality control is obviously lacking.

AyeGear H13 vs. SEV Knowmatic hoodie
by Shahzad K Hami (4 out of 5 stars)
December 5, 2016

I have owned the now-unavailable SEV knowmatic hoodie for about 2 years and I decided to try the AyeGear H13 as I liked the concept but was ultimately unsatisfied with what I had. I'm glad I pulled the trigger, even though the price is quite a bit higher for the H13. For those of you who may want to know the differences between the two, here are what I found most noteworthy:
> The SEV knowmatic hoodie is a softer microfleece while the H13 is a bit heavier feeling and slightly warmer cotton.
> The pockets on the knowmatic hoodie's interior are very loose/flimsy and do not feel very durable - it is even recommended not to dry the hoodie on high heat as it may melt the material. The H13 interior pockets feel a bit more substantial.
> The zippers on the knowmatic are smoother, all around.
> The fit of the knowmatic is much baggier while the H13 is more form-fitting. I prefer the H13 much more in this regard, and I'm not a little guy by any means (6' 4" @ 240lbs). However, if you want to layer under the H13 it is much more difficult. The SEV knowmatic hoodie gives you plenty of room but it is much less fashionable.
> The front pockets on the H13 have button clasps while the knowmatic has magnetic clasps (as well as on some of the inside pockets).
> The H13 does not have any thumb holes in the cuff while the SEV knowmatic does.
> The H13 does not have any way to thread your wires/earbuds through it like the SEV apparel does (coined "Personal Area Network").

Overall I like the H13 better. However, there are a few small gripes and potential improvements I'd like:
> The H13 color selection is really not very appealing to me (I ended up choosing black).
> The H13 zippers need improvement as they catch too often. Especially on the inside left pocket... that zipper constantly snags on the little pen pockets right next to it (this is probably the most aggravating thing I have found as it happens very often).
> The front pockets would be much better if they had magnetic closures. The button closure seems a bit silly for a pocket you will likely have your hands in so often.
> The large pocket on the lower left inside of the hoodie would likely benefit from 2 or more button or magnet closures - one closure of any type doesn't seem secure. The single velcro patch used seem like it will eventually come loose and does not feel secure. If anything, put more than one velcro patch to make it more secure.
> The aforementioned large pocket seems like it could easily be made deeper.
> The price needs to get more competitive. I'm likely going to give the new SEV hoodie a try as it is quite a bit cheaper ($110 vs. $80 - and SEV has sales often enough).

All in all, very good hoodie that just needs a bit more to make it a true 5-star product.

Size as advertised the problem.
by Joseph Renzetti (2 out of 5 stars)
March 5, 2014

This is not really an XXL. Maybe for fashion models, it is but not for us fat mortals. It's really a Large.

You might think a jacket designed to "hide - store" i-items might incorporate some extra breathing room - no not with this design.

It's very well made and other than not being wearable it's a great jacket.

So: thin folks - go for it. Huskier? - pass on it.

The number-sizes they advertise are not of the real world.

Color is WAY off.
by sir (3 out of 5 stars)
March 20, 2014

What i ordered was Red, what i received was unmistakably Pink. I thought maybe i was just crazy and even asked several other people. When I asked them what color it was i got two answers.
1: Pink
2: Salmon(also pink)

Aside from the color, the extra pockets seemed nice, and the fabric reasonably soft. I'll save the real review for after i exchange this one for something other than pink, and a size up.

Some of the pockets with zippers seem way too small though. But i have 'the hands of a pianist'(big hands, long skinny fingers) so i guess that could be why i think that.

It also fits pretty small. Typically I wear mediums, but another reviewer said they run small so i bought the next size up. It still seemed a little snug.

I read the reviews, which helped with moderating my own expectations.
by Brandon Smith (5 out of 5 stars)
May 28, 2016

As many people have said, it fits a bit large, it's a Hoodie with 13 pockets...It should be large! The zippers are pretty clunky as another reviewer pointed out. However, it does provide the full functionality that I desired. The left handed front zipper takes a little getting used to as well. I really enjoy the designated pockets, it makes looking for things a bit easier. Getting older, it's perfect for making sure I don't leave high priced gadgets just lying on a table somewhere. I always have a pocket to put stuff. Great for working inside computer/server rooms, it's not so heavy it's going to make you uncomfortable other places, but hey it's a hoodie just take it off if it's making you hot. Just remember to grab the hoodie and pack your stuff in it before you leave!

Size runs VERY small (so do pockets)
by Al Smith (2 out of 5 stars)
March 30, 2018

This item was just what I was looking for, but unfortunately it was all wrong. The fit was way too small . I ordered a size that normally fits me comfortably, even loisely, in most sweatshirts/hoodies. I could not even zip this up, comfortably, it was SO tight. The pocket for the phone was way too small; may have fit a phone from 10 years ago when they were smaller, but my phone wouldn't fit. Many of the other pockets were too small to hold much of anything. Great concept but I was hoping for something more useful & a normal fit. I had to return this.

Good idea, Bad quality
by Mike L (1 out of 5 stars)
January 11, 2019

It's a great idea of having many pockets. But the quality is bad.
1. one of the buttons inside right pocket is not well made. and has very sharp protruding edge. My hand almost got cut by it.
2. left pocket has a big hole, although the hole may not leak because it just leak to inside pocket. it show bad quality.
3. the iron logo is strange placed, I just cut it off. it should just print a logo somewhere.
4. Metal zip should be plastic
5. this is my personal opinion, I felt the arm pocket is too small and too low, as my original plan is to use it to hold cellphone.
