Company no longer AWOL
by Janine Ohmer (4 out of 5 stars)
April 15, 2019

Update:

After I posted this review, the owner of the company contacted me on every social media channel imaginable. It helps that I have a unique name, but still his resourcefulness was impressive. He said that the "contact us" form on his website was broken for about six months without his realizing it, and both of my attempts to contact him had come during the time. After some correspondence the issue was resolved, but he did insist on a phone call. In this day and age of the internet I don't think that should be necessary, but that may be because I am not a phone person so I avoid it whenever possible.

He said that most people contact him through Amazon, which frankly had never occurred to me. So if you need to get in touch with him that is probably the best way to do it.

I struggled with what overall rating to give the stand. As I said initially my husband loved it, but it really only lasted 5 - 6 months before it started to deteriorate, and it broke completely after 8 - 9 months. So it's a 5 for design and a 2 for longevity. Since I can't give it a 3.5 I will round up to 4.

Original review:

I bought this for my husband and he loved it until the hinge broke. I have made two attempts to contact TStand and they have completely ignored me. I would love to buy him another one but I can't support a product from a company that doesn't support its customers.

Painful Price, Good Quality
by Phil Geusz (4 out of 5 stars)
June 7, 2017

I find myself a bit conflicted about this product. On the one hand, it's far too expensive for what it is-- two hinged pieces of plastic, plus a smaller one that serves as a retainer, and an elastic band. I put off my purchase for months believing that the price simply _must_ fall, or that something else equally promising would hit the market. And the reason it's getting four stars now instead of five is, mostly, the price. It's so high that it's a very, very difficult thing to get past.

But I also have to give the devil his due. The reason that I was still in the market for a tablet-holder when I finally hit the "buy" button-- after delaying my purchase for so long, searching all the while-- was that there simply wasn't anything else on the market that looked even halfway promising. From time to time I'd search Amazon, You Tube and elsewhere and find... Nothing at all even close. Over and over again, no matter how many times I reparsed my search-phrase. And, I suppose, if you have a niche all to yourself you can charge whatever the heck you like for your product. In the end I realized I wasn't using my iPad nearly as much as I would if I actually had such a gadget, and.... Scowled intently and bought the thing.

Don't get me wrong. I still most deeply resent paying almost $70 for nothing but plastic and elastic. But, at least, it's a good, solid product that I expect will last a very long time. The weakest point, it seems to me, is likely to be the elastic band, and the makers seem confident that even this component will give a very long service life. The hinge is firm, the grip secure, and the chest/belly rest comfortable and easy to steady with a well-placed hand. If I could ask for one design improvement, it'd be to make this stand able to accept at least an oversized phone as well as the various tablets. I suspect that the basic design and concept is even more suitable for something like an iPhone 6+ or 7+ than the heavier iPad, but as things are it can't close far enough to grip anything that small. Perhaps an adapter could be included?

I'm retired blue-collar, not a rich Silicon Valley type. I winced in genuine pain as I hit "buy", and likely many of you reading this will do the same. If there'd been anything cheaper and equally promising available, I'd absolutely have gone there first. I even gave real consideration to installing a shelf above the head of my bed and getting creative from there with C-clamps and 1x4's. But at least in the end the T-Stand works well, and seems to be a quality product. So at least I have that going for me as I await my dreaded credit card statement.

A solid product after replacement, updated score
by Paul Beasi (5 out of 5 stars)

1/23/17 Update

I was contacted by the manufacturer because based on my original review below, they felt I had a faulty product. I have received the replacement and the squeaking is all but gone so I am definitely convinced that I had a defective unit. As for slipping when used on a table in the alternate position, they sent me some rubber feet for some extra grip. While this mostly resolves the problem, because the front of the stand rests on the hinge it's difficult to put a foot there. With a pad on the back and without a pad on the hinge, the grip is improved though not perfect. With a pad on the hinge it is a big improvement, but it looks pretty stupid and I'm not convinced it will stay put. I'm not really concerned with the looks, so I'll leave it like that. But of course while the manufacturer sent me these, they aren't included normally.

Based on the fact that the replacement unit resolved the biggest problem (the squeaking) and the exemplary unsolicited customer service I received, I'm upping my review to 5 stars. I am leaving my original review below.

Original review:

For its primary use I like this stand. It does what it is supposed to do when you are reclined and it does that fairly well, keeping me from having to hold my 12.9" iPad Pro while I'm reading or remotely using my desktop machines. But I do have a couple issues. First, it's noisy as heck. The plastic creaks and groans if you move too much or try to adjust the position of the screen. I'd happily pay more for a stand made out of a stronger material. The other problem is noticed when you try to use it as a stand on a flat surface. It's very slippery and slides all over the place when you try to use the device it's holding since it has no rubber feet. You can't even put your own feet on it very easily since in this position it sits on the hinge in the front. So unless you're just watching the screen and not interacting with it, it's not very useful in this setup. At the price which seems to have risen 20% since I bought it, I feel these design flaws should be addressed.

Functions well but looks cheap.

It does what it's advertised to do, I just can't get over the $70 price point for a plastic item. I'm in the consumer goods manufacturing field so I do have an idea the manufacturing cost for something like this. Also, the packaging could be a lot better for it's price tag. The faded graphics really cheapens the product even more regardless of functionality. It looks like it was an overstocked product that you find at a clearance rack or in a discounts store. I'm gifting this item, it feels like I'm giving a $30 gift instead of the true value. Would I return it? No. Would I buy it again? Probably not. Do I recommend it? If you don't care about the cost, then sure.

Versatile stand for iPad Air 2 -- equally at home on your chest or any flat surface.
by Coffee Infusion,Top Contributor: Guitars (5 out of 5 stars)

I thought I already wrote a review for the TStand. Got an email asking for a review. I'm confused, but whatever. Anyway, the TStand is a brilliant idea and is equally adept at both desktop viewing and viewing in bed. For some reason, the stand just looks like it's big and heavy, but in actuality, it's very light and quite small. When it folds up it's highly portable. It's made from a durable modern plastic material with what seems to be a hollow or foam core.

If you have a Logitech Hinge Case for an iPad Air 2 like myself, you'll need to remove the case when using the TStand. When the Hinge Case is folded behind the tablet, it extends about an inch above the top of the tablet. Sometimes I can play that overlap height by pulling the case from the bottom, but then it's not a very secure fit in the stand.

Hopefully, I will be able to take a picture of the TStand that gives proper context to its small size. I originally was looking for a nighttime reading solution for a friend when I stumbled upon the TS. When I sent my buddy the link he responded that he didn't want something so big and bulky. Ironically, I ended up buying the stand--albeit for a different purpose entirely.

I play guitar and often sit on public benches. I was looking for a portable, lightweight stand that would elevate my iPad to relieve neck and back fatigue. While I still could use something significantly taller, the TStand has really made things easier. However, I found a DIY solution for increasing the height by x2. It's a real Hillbilly Hack, but it works.

Summary - highly versatile stand for iPad Air 2. It's too expensive IMHO, but I do understand that it's sort of a boutique item, and given its Kickstarter roots, I suspect the entrepreneurs have higher production costs than a big company like Logitech. On the other hand, the Logitech Hinge case costs about the same. I just feel that a good stand shouldn't cost more than $40. Would I buy another TStand? Absolutely.

Suggestion for future versions: I would like to have it fold completely flat. It wastes quite a bit of space in my bag. Obviously, the curved legs prevent that from happening. Would be great to have adjustable legs that have two positions -- straight (for folding) and bent (for viewing from chest).

I would also like a version that holds tablets higher (for musicians). I have found that it could be done simply in 2 different ways.

Issues:

It's a creaker in bed mode. Due to pliability and/or rigidity of materials used, makes small creaks when move, reposition, adjust the screen, etc all. When using at night with a sleeping better half by your side, you will need to be careful. It can wake up your significant other if she/he is a light sleeper. It's really not an issue for most people I'm sure, but my wife can hear a pin drop in her sleep.

If my in ear monitors swing and knock against the plastic, it's very loud.

In desktop mode, the screen tends to bounce when typing. It's a rigid sort of bounce or vibration. Not overly annoying for most duties, but it's not as smooth an experience as you may like. I wouldn't want to write any novels on it in desk mode. In bed, however, I tend to rest my left middle finger on the top left edge of my iPad and use my left thumb with right hand for smooth typing.

One more thing - when using as a table top stand, the TStand's surface is very smooth. On a park bench, it's very slippery. I attached adhesive-backed rubber feet, which you will see in the pictures. Now it's stable and the finish is protected. Perfect.

Great product. Very useful to me.

I like this product a lot. It isn't perfect, but what is? I can position it on my chest, and lie flat, and it works fine. I don't have to hold my ipad up with one hand while playing games etc. with the other. I can play hack 'n' slash games that require both hands (moving and fighting), and the only weight on my arms and shoulders is...my arms and shoulders! Works great while sitting as well. My only neg comment is really not about the product. I'm a slender guy, but tall, so my lappage (lap width - just made that word up) is a little wide, so while the legs fit around my lap fairly well, a larger width (or even adjustable) would work better for me. But that's not a product issue, so no reason to bring my rating down.

I recommend the tStand to anyone who uses their iPad a lot in the sitting or lying position. For car use, I would recommend the iKross 2-in-1 iPad Cup Mount Holder (the actual product name is quite a bit longer; you'll thank me later). I'm sure there are other great holders for cars, but that's what I have, and I like it. But the tStand is great for home use.

Works great and when lying down it does not have balance ...
by DM (5 out of 5 stars)
October 22, 2017

Update (see org note below) --- Bought 2 more. One for my girlfriend as she liked mine and Another one for me as I just purchased a new tablet. Have not had any issues with the "rubber band" as noted from the manufacturer. But in all fairness I don't taking out the tablet(s) very often so I'm not forcing multiple adjustments on a constant basis. Use it with IPad 9.7 and Fire10 tablets with no issues for their sizes. Simple and easy to use. Have not had any quality issues. Still can recommend this product (see org review below).

This is the second one I have purchased. Got the first one just under a year ago. Works great and when lying down it does not have balance issues as viewing angle is altered/adjusted.. No quality issues with either this one or the one I already have. -----Can recommend this product.

I really like it.
by Evelyn R. (5 out of 5 stars)

I really like it. I wish it was a little taller, I put a thin pillow under half of it to raise the iPad up about an inch, so I don't have to bend my neck as much, my neck feels better with it raised it's just awkward . In order to use it with my life proof case I have to take the rubber things off the clamps that hold the iPad. I also had concerns about the rubber band but they say it will last ten years, we will see. It has made using and watching movies on my iPad much more enjoyable while laying in bed. Buy it you will love it.

This is perfect! As an avid reader
by Yumenoko (5 out of 5 stars)
December 11, 2016

This is perfect! As an avid reader, I always have to read before bed (no matter how late it is) but it's always super awkward since I lie on my back and read a Kindle. Even though I prop myself up it's still a pain to hold the Kindle and tab to the next page. I didn't think this would actually work but it's the real deal! It's so easy to insert the Kindle and then prop the stand on my chest to read hands free. I do still need to keep hitting the screen to progress the pages, but that's so much easier than holding it *and* turning pages. I should have bought this sooner, as I used to only get through about 10-15 minutes of reading before I got tired arms; Now I can read until I'm actually tired!

OK, but iPad Pro issues, other alternatives exist
by DLT (4 out of 5 stars)
December 13, 2016

It could be a little better. But I do use it, and it does beat holding the device up with my hand in bed. I put my iPhone in it since it doesn't hold my tablet. Doesn't hold my ipad pro with the case I have. Heck, doesn't hold a normal 10 inch ipad with the kidproof case I have.

Those considering this might also want to look at the Tablift Tablet stand. I like that on as well, but that one also has issues holding an ipad Pro. But that one is a little preferable than this thing which is resting on top of me.
