The medium size is a little (smidgeon) large for me--I usually wear a medium or large. I would have liked to try on a small but didn't order one, so I'll never know if that would have fit better. This one fits fine but I have to turn the cuffs back.

At first I thought it was going to get returned because a) my 9 lb Chihuahua didn't really fit in the pocket and b) she couldn't get comfortable in it when we were just sitting on the couch--in fact she walked right out of it. This is a dog that climbs into my sweatshirts so I though she would love this.

But, then I took my two small old dogs for a walk and both dogs loved this. Even my 19 lb mutt appreciated a ride in the pocket. She was able to get comfy enough. My dogs took turns in the pocket...they actually relaxed in it!

So for hiking with my small dogs it's a yes.

The sweatshirt is heavy duty so for cooler weather only. The seams are good enough to support the extra weight in the front pocket. I did not feel like I was getting strangled or that the shoulder seams would burst at any moment. The inner pocket is lined with a think knit fabric and is removable (bonus). The pocket for your hands, or car keys or cell phone is big enough and useful.

The quality is extremely good. I read so many reviews of this type of sweatshirt that said they ran small so I ordered a much larger size than I needed and my little dog is too far down. I normally like loose sweatshirts so I buy an xl when really a large in top fits fine. I'm 5'4" and weight 150 and think an xl would have fit fine. I ordered an XXL and it was way too long and sleeves were too long. I still like it as it so well made. Worth spending more. Will be warm enough to wear outside in normal cold weather.
