Making Boards, Good Starter Mill
by Modern Pioneer (4 out of 5 stars)
January 20, 2016

This arrived when expected and was well packaged. I removed all the parts and instructions and looked over them. I did a inventory of all the parts and everything was there. The parts were clearly labeled in the instructions, and were just as exact as shown.

I decided to look the craftsmanship over and found that it has been made pretty well. The zinc coating is really nice and a good quality. This will protect it from the environment to a degree and a must have when working with stuff outdoors. The instructions were straight forward and assembly was as expected.

Using my chainsaw with a 20 inch bar, I also got a ripping chain and had that on the saw already. I mounted it on the carriage and got a good feel for the extra weight of the unit. Having a old aluminum ladder section, I drill holes in that and used two inch screws at both ends, two holes each, to convert the ladder into a rail system. The rail system is used to guide the first cut of the log, and as you will see in the photo's below, important.

After setting up my make shift rail system, I scabbed the first board off. I discarded it and removed the ladder from my project. Using the flat surface I just created, I placed the Granberg Mill on that surface and adjusted my cut setting to 1 inch, thus includes the thickness of the chain which left me with a one and three eights total adjustment.

At a steady rate, I moved the Alaskan Mill along the guide surface and began to create oak planks. I wedged the board as I went along to keep it from pinching my blade. I found that the steadier you are, the better your start surface, the better quality boards you can get.

It does take a little practice, learn from what you are doing, make those corrections. Because you will be able to make some very good quality, valuable boards that other wise might cost you an arm and a leg. I will disclose that I am a very honest and unbiased reviewer. Great sawmill for the money
by Andrew (5 out of 5 stars)

Works great! Assembly required but doesn't take too long and you only need a chainsaw wrench tool which they include. All parts came vacuum sealed. You will need to build a guide rail for the first cut. I just rode it on the top of the log because I was too excited to try it out. It worked out fine but could be smoother with the rails. Everything held tight and straight throughout the milling. I used a Stihl ms271 Farm Boss with a 20" bar and an aggressive chain. Cut at about 30 seconds per foot give or take.

Great Tool - Keep Chain Sharp
by Bhill671 (5 out of 5 stars)
February 6, 2018

This tool is awesome, takes a little practice and patience with the setup, that said however, it works very well with the right saw/chain setup. Recommend 40-50 cc saw minimum, I had best results with my Husky 455 Rancher with 20" and a ripping chain. I also purchased the slabbing rail brackets, however you could make your own setup with some angle iron. While slabbing some Ponderosa Pine the ripping chain made a HUGE difference, boards seem flatter and fewer chain marks and gouges left. I tried two different electric light duty chainsaws just for kicks and to mitigate noise - broke both of them first pass.

LOVE LOVE LOVE IT.
by Lisa Bishop (5 out of 5 stars)

I got this for my husband for a birthday present. And he loves it. He has been looking for a while and was on the verge of borrowing a friends. We did learn that the ripping chain is a must! The results are a cleaner cut and an easier time slicing. There is defiantly a talent to using this. We don't own a planner nor a belt sander, so we wanted to be able to rip live edge boards that were clean cut with little extra sanding required. After a few cuts to get the hand of it, we were able to make some great boards. The measurement device on the mill is GREAT, helping set the cut anywhere from 1/2" - 13", our cuts were 2-1/2" to 3-1/2"

Custom lumber made easy
by 1window (5 out of 5 stars)
April 12, 2018

This little chain saw mill is easy to use. It attached easily to the bar and the depth adjustment has a ruler to gauge the thickness of the slab accurately. With a rip chain on a 20 inch Stihl and some 2x4's as a rail guide to make my first cut, I was able to mill ten 6 foot slabs 2 1/4" thick from this cedar tree on our property. The great thing about having a personal mill is you can custom make slabs to the desired thickness. You can't buy this kind of wild edge lumber at the local building supply. The wife wanted a dining room table and a new bathroom counter. Having this handy tool is like having your own lumber yard right out the back door.

It was easy to assemble
by Tommy Franchize (5 out of 5 stars)
January 28, 2018

I've never used a log mill and am not even particularly skilled with a chainsaw, but I bought this because I do a lot of wood projects and have access to large logs. It was easy to assemble, had clear directions, took about 20 minutes. Worked better than I could have expected. I'll let the pictures speak for the product. Keep in mind, I've never done this before and had no help.

Ease of use.
by Amazon Customer (4 out of 5 stars)

Starting the first cut is critical. A heavier saw will have the tendency to drop to the saw side. If you see the guide lifting off the tree, lift the saw to keep guide flat on tree.

but the cuts were pretty clean and the tool is considerably safe to use
by Amazon Customer (5 out of 5 stars)
November 7, 2016

Used a 16in 2.3cubic inch stihl, it takes about 30 minutes for 8 ft of green red oak. It would go faster with a bigger saw, but the cuts were pretty clean and the tool is considerably safe to use, just awkward to put on the bar.

Great tool to harvest lumber.
by James W. (4 out of 5 stars)
December 17, 2016

It harvests lumber. It is a little awkward to slide down the log. Careful footing is important.

The slabs it turns out are flat and uniform. The investment is well worth it.
