Not too bad overall- much cheaper than the bowflex
by my2cents (4 out of 5 stars)

Not too bad overall- much cheaper than the bowflex. You can adjust weight in 2.5lb increments but it is a little more involved than I reaized - you must remove all the weight, flip the red lever in the picture and then watch out for two 2.5 lb steel cylinders launching out of the handle toward your toes - you will only make that mistake once! Then you repeat the process for the other side. So to change weight by 2.5 lbs it's not as convienient but not a deal breaker for me. Also, the "pin" that you slide to select different weights is a U shaped piece of plastic - little more flimsy than I would like but overall it works. If I was more serious about weightlifting I would probably spring for the bowflex version but overall I am happy with these for my casual workouts.

Great for home gym

They are great. They are a little bigger than a regular dumbbell but the multiple set up is worth every penny.

Picture attached. 20lb, 34.6lb, 35lb and 50.

I use both dumbbell and plate and reallyb was not much of a difference. The quick change in weight is great. I would not recommend it, if you are working out early or late where noise is a factor. The plates do make some noise. Close the door and you'll be fine.

Exceptional set of dumbbells
by LARRY (5 out of 5 stars)
January 17, 2019

I have used traditional dumbbells, I have owned a set of Elite Powerblocks (similar to the personal trainer version) which I gifted and regret doing so, and I just had, regrettably, a set of Bowflex dumbbells. The difference is night and day. How anyone can say that Bowflex are good dumbbells has never owned anything else. They are TOO long. As such, it effects form when performing ANY exercise. When doing dumbbell curls, your arm is awkwardly too far out to the left and right as you make your way up to the finish of the movement. When performing shoulder presses, and bench presses, forget about effectively converging to the center to complete the movement. Docking the dumbbell back into the base is a NIGHTMARE. You strain to get it perfectly aligned to the plates that may already be in the base. And it is primarily plastic. Honestly, it creates a lack of confidence in every way. The Powerblocks, I now have the personal trainer version, are super easy to change weight, super easy to dock with no strain or stress, feel substantially greater in functionality, design, form, usage, and weight. Dramatic difference. Anyone getting the Bowflex is again, a stranger to having used better equipment, and probably is getting the Bowflex because I can only imagine they must think they look cool or something. There is no benefit in the use or design of the Bowflex over the Powerblock - NONE.

they came in great condition and were shipped securely

I just received these a few days ago... they came in great condition and were shipped securely.

I really like them, they are clever and change fast... they are a bit different as you put your hand in the middle of the thing... I have medium/small hands and my hands fit fine, it's just different to have to fit your hands inside the the things... I could see someone with very large hands being a bit tight.

they clank a little on an any curl, not obnoxious though... but they make no noise on any press that I do.... I actually think it's the 2.5 lb weights in inside the grip that's making the noise and moving a bit, and not the main plates on the outside of the dumbbell... so, you take those out and I think it'd be silent for the most part.

anyway, neat design, and very compact.... great space saver for your workout area, and pretty decent deal at $250 if you're going to be using a variety of weights in your routine as iron shaped into a dumbbell is absurdly expensive for some reason.

Five stars for product, one star for shipping! I only got one!!!
by Amazon Customer (5 out of 5 stars)

So i ordered these for my husband's birthday a couple weeks ago. The item is sold as a set but is sent in two boxes. We received one dumbbell and were patiently waiting for the second for a week. The carrier just today said they lost our second dumbbell and we now have to return it. We were expecting it because so many other people have said this and his is Amazon, so we rolled the dice and lost. So for the delivery aspect I would give this one star.

As for the single dumbbell we received, I would give it a five star rating. I took it out of the box and here was no damage. It is more compact than the all black version and feels very solid! I did a couple single arm military presses with it and it was nice! Feels a lot less wobbly than a circular dumbbell. Additionally, the little cylinders that add 2.5lbs each are a pretty neat feature and are why we chose this version over the all black one. I was really looking forward to getting the second one. There are l only things I would change about this dumbbell: the clip to change weights is plastic and I would prefer to have either a much harder plastic or a metal pin (presumably it was built this way to prevent damage to the dumbbells themselves as I would rather the pin break than damage the dumbbells), and the only way to access the inner cylinders to remove or insert is you have to remove the pin and pull it out which can add time. if you are doing a workout like p90x you may have to pause the workout to do this, but it is a small price to pay for an excellent dumbbell! All in all, I would recommend this dumbbell to anyone serious in having a home gym. For reference, I have been lifting for over 15 years, I plan on competing in women's bikini bodybuilding competition after I have my second baby and wanted to have some access to weights while on maternity leave. However I would push to get it from a more reliable seller so you can avoid the huge disappointment of only receiving one! So therefor I would give the product itself 5 stars!

Freakin Awwesome!

Why did I not buy these earlier. These are awesome. I have them sitting on the floor. I do not use a stand, but that would be a great accessory to have. If you don't have a stand they are still awesome. To change the weights takes seconds. The length of the dumbell is shorter than that of a cast which I find to be a bonus. If you have very large hands you might have a problem getting your hand inside for a good grip. I do not have that problem, but I can see that being an issue for some. The grip feels great. The movement feels natural. The clanking that some complain about is not that bad. It is slight and if you play music, you do not hear a thing. One thing I stress though, do not drop your weights. I am used to sometimes dropping my cast weights. I do not think you would want to do that here if you want these to last long. They are constructed well, trust me, however, since it is square and the selector clip is a flexible plastic, something may happen. If you take care of them, they will take care of you, wink! Have fun with them!

Never purchasing a weight set again!
by ccody (5 out of 5 stars)

Such a good purchase.

I've moved around a lot over the years and something about moving tons of weight in hand weights has never made sense. So, I've actually gone through quite a few sets of weights through this process, wasting a ton of money.

Not anymore! These weights are fantastic. They function perfectly and are so easier to move around and store.

I will say that the square built of these weights does take a little bit of adjustment. Doing overhead tricep extensions, for example, is a little weight. But, there are four poles in the weights that gives you a couple of options on how you want to hold the weights for these types of exercises.

Overall, once you get past that adjustment, these are great.

Wonderful, but be careful if you have thick wrists and large thumbs
by David P. (3 out of 5 stars)
January 28, 2019

I really wanted to love the PowerBlock Personal Trainer Set. The boxes arrived tonight, and I was impressed by the quality and the compactness. I played around with the different weight options, including the 2.5 lbs weights in the cylinders. Then I tried doing a simple bicep curl.

The problem I have with these dumbbells is that my thumb presses against one of the cylinders that holds a 2.5 lb weight. My thumb is too long to tuck out of the way and avoid hitting the cylinder when I wrap my other fingers around the grip. The weight cylinders are not padded. Also, my wrists are thick and I found the cavity containing the grip a bit confining, but I could live with that since the bars that press against my wrists are nicely padded.

I selected the Powerblock dumbbells because I wanted 2.5 lbs increments and I thought that the Bowflex SelectTech 552s were too long. My next choice is the Core Fitness adjustable dumbbells, and I just ordered a set. Unfortunately, the Core Fitness dumbbells are only adjustable in increments of 5 lbs, but I can live with that. I did try adjusting the Powerblock dumbbells in increments of 2.5 lbs, and it's a great feature that I think I will miss a bit in the Core Fitness dumbbells.

I did not read any other reviews noting the same issue, so it appears that very few people have this problem. The only reason I gave this product three stars is so that others will be able to see this issue when reading the very few reviews that are not five stars. For most people with normal size wrists and thumbs, I would rate the PowerBlock Personal Trainer Set five stars.

Works as advertised, easy to adjust IF
by Coffeehawk (5 out of 5 stars)
November 11, 2018

These work as intended, I've had them for almost a year. I have no negative comments.

The 2 pieces of advice that can really help you are:
1. Have a sturdy table or old chest of drawers that is at least above your knees in height or ideally waist high but not much higher, and use that when adjusting the amount of weight. It really helps to see where the inserts go, very hard to do if the weights are on the floor.
2. The device is sturdy enough and works as intended but don't be a gym-bro and think you need to drop/throw the weights on the floor after every set. It's a mechanical 'thing' with moving parts, treat it as such and they should last "forever".

Broken tips
by Tab on Fire (3 out of 5 stars)
February 27, 2018

So right out the box the plastic tips to the weight lock had snapped, probably from the shipping and handling. (The box was in a rough state)
Anyway I did not pay much mind until a few weeks later when I went to try and use them and noticed the weights were shifted and uneven and close to falling off. I then realized the tips were more important than I had thought and now find myself searching for replacement parts which I can't find. It's a real let down even though I love these dumbbells from using some elsewhere. If anyone knows where I can get replacement parts, please let me know.
