Perfect for my 5-night backpacking trip!
by Katey (5 out of 5 stars)
July 12, 2016

I bought this package for a 5-night backpacking trip and was extremely pleased with the quality and quantity. I'm a health-conscious foodie and outdoors enthusiast, and I refuse to sacrifice eating delicious, healthy meals just because I'm in the backcountry.

The veggies were extremely fragrant and tasted wonderful, my trip mates with their factory-produced, pre-packaged meals were super jealous.

I mixed and matched the items in this package (plus some additional outside ingredients as noted) to create the following meals:
-Mexican-style bean and veggie blend: black and pinto beans, potatoes, tomatoes, bell peppers, corn, and onions. (Outside ingredients: corn tortillas, fresh avocados, herbs and spices, and dehydrated egg mix for a tortilla breakfast soup)
-Italian white bean and vegetable soup: white beans, green beans, onions, celery, carrots, bell peppers, peas, and cabbage. (Outside ingredients: dry pesto sauce mix packet from Safeway, sun dried tomatoes, herbs & spices.)
-Creole red beans and rice: red beans, bell peppers, celery, onion, corn, tomatoes. (Outside ingredients: minute brown rice, herbs & spices)
-Deluxe vegetable ramen: cabbage, peas, green beans, carrots. (Outside ingredients: instant ramen package, dried shiitake mushrooms, dried nori, wakame, kombu, and dulse seaweeds)
-Indian-style curried veggies and lentils: lentils, carrots, potatoes, green beans, peas. (Outside ingredients: curry powder, minute brown rice.)

I really enjoyed mixing and matching the ingredients to make my meal plan for the week and the package included enough for 2 people (breakfasts and dinners, that is) for a 5-night trip like mine. Would definitely order again and recommend to all vegetable loving backpackers.

Almost perfect

Overall, I rate this backpacking kit with 4 stars because there are a few veggies that take a very long time to hydrate. The peas would be a good example. The green beans don't seem to get too soft either. But overall everything taste fine in soup or whatever you're making. I definitely agree with the other reviewer who said the cabbage taste great alone. Actually, the cabbage is so good I plan to purchase a gallon size container of it from harmony house's website. I purchased the sample kit so I would know what I could order in larger quantities later on. As of right now, I love the cabbage, mixed peppers, carrots, celery, onions, northern beans, and tomatoes the best, and will order all of these in larger containers next time. The most simpliest way to use these samples is by adding any of them to chicken or beef broth or even use bouillon cubes, and that's all you really need. Taste just fine. And I make my own salad dressing so I take the onions and mixed peppers and hydrate them in oil, vinegar, water and seasoning, and it makes some really tasty salad dressing.

UPDATE: During the holidays, I travelled via plane to several cities and I included some of these veggie packets in my carry-on. I ended up staying in a hotel that had a small kitchenette and making soup was a breeze using these dehydrated veggies. I'm on my way on another trip and I already have a few of these stashed in my carry-on. If you're a backpacker or not, these veggies/beans go great with rice. If you carry along some rice in your backpack and a few of these pouches, you can add the rice and red beans in a pot with water and seasonings and simmer and have a great lunch.

Great investment for backpacking

I got this product for my girlfriend for her birthday, and we were very happy with the food.

We took the cabbage, onions, celery, potatoes, and carrots with us on our last camping trip, and it was so nice to have hot and hearty food for supper after hiking all day. Additionally, since I was the pack mule, I was happy because the dried food added little noticeable weight to my pack. I cannot recommend this product enough.

Some things to note:
1) Since these foods are dried, they use up a considerable amount of water and take a bit of time to cook; however, we figured out that this can be remedied by cooking the product in a pot with a lid on.
2) A little goes a long way. Unless you have a big pot, you should only need a couple of tablespoons of each item you are adding to your dish. Next time, we plan on measuring our ingredients before the trip and mixing them together in separate bags.
3) You only get the vegetables; seasoning is up to you. We plan to alleviate this issue by adding seasoning to our premixed bags of the vegetables. (see number 2)

... product for a 10 day backpacking trip and was delighted with it
by Amazon Customer (5 out of 5 stars)

Bought this product for a 10 day backpacking trip and was delighted with it! Easy to prepare meals in advance (just mixed in plastic bags then simmered in a small pot for about 10 minutes at meal time). Menus included were a good starting point for meal ideas - I enjoyed every one of the meals I made from the suggested menus, as well as those I created. The 'kit' has a great selection of foods and was excellent value.

Happy Trails

This product is excellent. I first saw it hiking the Application Trail going thru Franklin, North Carolina at a Hiking Hostel. While I didn't buy it then, after dehydrated my own veggies and fruits, I thought for this year's hike I would try this out. My wife was shocked at the amount and variety of commonly used kitchen items in this box. I had to get her to pledge a "hands off" while I was out hiking so these products would make it me in bounce boxes via USPS. This box comes with recipes and you can make your own meals. I soak them in my cup for a while before boiling water. I then put the veggies into a Ziploc Freezer bag with the boiling water and wait 10-minutes. They are acceptably reconstituted. I made a square ziploc cozie out of an old window shade and 100-mile-an-hour tape to fit the bags. This allows me to stand up the bags and have some insulation for both reheating once the water is inside and to hold it without getting burned. I would highly recommend Harmony House Foods for backpacking, camping or home use. Make your own recipies. I bought number 10 cans of freeze dried beef and chicken (avail on Amazon), and make my meals. I put everything in the freezer until needed for hiking and then mail out 10-days before arrival at a destination. Best thing to do is put it in a Freezer Ziploc, and the Vaccum Seal it with the heavy duty plastic to get a good seal. Also put little packets for freshness like you find in other commercially available foods like beef jerkies, freeze dried meals, etc. Happy Trails

You won't regret it!

Even though we were merely in the lawn of our apartment and not romping the woods, we decided to try a few of these out first before relying on them during a long hike. We used our fire pit to replicate the situation in which we'd be cooking - including the fact that we were outside in 10 degree F weather. These cooked up great. We have our own hiking spices that we typically bring - after adding them these were actually quite appealing. I can only imagine how good they'll taste after hiking several miles in the woods. Definitely worth the price. Very nice to have a vegan option to take with us hiking as I am vegan and he is vegetarian.

Hard to rehydrate
by GearAholic (2 out of 5 stars)
October 15, 2018

So I bought this as a way to mix and match and make my own combo backpacking meals. That way I can add whatever meat, or other fresh ingredient, but at least I have veggies already dehydrated, and I can buy rice separately. Good idea, but not sure if I'm doing something wrong...I can't hardly get any of these items to be more than pretty firm. We're talking way more firm than al dente! Basically inedible in my opinion as a camp meal because of excess water and boiling time. At the end, even ones that sort of worked look like they're super low quality worked over veggies. I'd return it, but don't think I can at this late date. I should have tried something sooner!

Tasty, easy and economical for bike tours and backpacking.
by Silver Hooligan (4 out of 5 stars)
November 11, 2014

This is my second box. I used this product on my first bike tour. I was going through remote areas without any services or grocery stores. It's light weight and I was able to pack three weeks of food with me without taking up too much space or adding too much weight.

The corn no matter what was always a bit too chewy. Everything else though cooked up well. What I did was throw together what I wanted into a pot with water when I arrived at camp and let them soak for a bit before cooking them up. I brought along my favorite spices to flavor the meals. Key is to add a little olive oil too.

Economical and easy way to eat healthy meals and get your veggies.

I HIGHLY recommend these foods!

I absolutely LOVE anything from this company! Their freeze-dried foods are very convenient, taste great, and are fun to experiment with in my cooking adventures!

We have pre-tested, and pre-packed a number of hearty, healthy meals for camping, which are lightweight, easy to assemble at home, and only require adding water at mealtime.

They come with quick, easy recipes, and we put a few together, added some TVP and seasonings, and got quite good results.

I had originally purchased these foods for camping, but they're fast becoming a pantry staple in our everyday kitchen!

This is beautiful!

That's the first thing that I thought when I opened the package. Everything is packaged so nicely and the different legumes and vegetables look uniformly cut and processed. It's just a gorgeous array of food and I can't wait to try it. I was pleasantly surprised by two things: 1) You don't have to cook it! Soaking is enough! 2) There are recipes! I can't wait to try them on the trail. :-)
